Re: azlan shah cup {hockey}

Pakistan are playing without Sohail Abbas who has reversed his retirement but hasnt trained enough to be picked. Onus is on youngsters like Imran Warsi to make their presence felt as PC specialist.

Saqlain will lead an experimental team consisting of 11 out off 18 players from Junior winning team.

Re: azlan shah cup {hockey}

that's good news for the development of youngsters in pakistan hockey with a legend making a comeback. i would've still picked the legendary sohail abbas though. he is the 'brian lara' of hockey and the man has 2 much quality which will be missed.

**Pakistan beat New Zealand 2-1 in Azlan Shah Cup opener **

KUALA LUMPUR: Pakistan successfully launched its campaign beating New Zealand by 2-1 goals in the opening match of the Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament in Kuala Lumpur today.

Adnan Zakir netted first goal for Pakistan in the 15th minute of the match, which was equalized by New Zealand after seven minutes. Imran Warsi scored decisive second goal for Pakistan two minutes before the interval.

Pakistan won the match by 2-1 as no team succeeded to score in the goalless second half of the match.

Re: azlan shah cup {hockey}

Good omen for Pakistan as Sohail Abbas's replacement Imran Warsi looked decent with his flicks. He scored once, hit the post twice. Hope tos ee him more in future.

Re: azlan shah cup {hockey}

Could somebody put up the tournament schedule please including timings.
Only 2-1 vs NZL, not too good a start.

Go Pakistan Go!

Re: azlan shah cup {hockey}

Pakistan are leading Korea 3- 1 at half time. Playing superbly, no doubt about that.

Re: azlan shah cup {hockey}

Pak: 3-2 now.

Re: azlan shah cup {hockey}

*Pakistan won a nail-biting match against Koreans 3 - 2. * Pakistan were the better team througout but the number of penalty corners conceded shuold be a concern.

Did anyone see the third goal scored by Akhtar Ali? One of the best I have seen in recent times!!!!

Re: azlan shah cup {hockey}

that goal by akhtar was a little fortunate i would say sab. simply cos after rounding the goalie, his shot went through the legs of the korean :D] on the goal line. maybe on any other given day, the ball mite not have made it's destination.

khair who cares, we won and that's all it matters. i felt we played a well controlled match, the koreans r fast movers and our lads slowed the pace down well by keeping the ball. especially rehan butt was amazing on the rite flank.

i was wondering why aren't their any left handed hockey players??? coz according to the commentators today, pak r weak on the left flank. + i've been wondering for a while now, no team as far as i know, has a left handed player. ideal i would say on the left flank. no need to cut in as the right handers do, just hit the ball in the danger zone from the perfect angle.

pak play south africa tomorrow @ 11 am {gmt}

S. Korea threaten to pull out after losing to Pakistan

KUALA LUMPUR, May 28: South Korea on Saturday threatened to pull out of the 14th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup following their 3-2 defeat to Pakistan after player Sung Hoon-yoon was sent to hospital when he took a stick to the face early in the second half. The Koreans want organisers to take action against Pakistan captain Mohammad Saqlain, who was involved in the high-sticking, or they would boycott their remaining four matches.

“All we want is justice,” said Korea’s team manager, Cho Sung-jun. “He was our penalty corner specialist and after he was injured our players found it very difficult.

“The least we want the organisers to do is analyse the video footage. We take a very serious view of this and if nothing is done we will consider boycotting the tournament.”

Cho said Sung required five stitches over one eye and that his nose was slightly broken.

“We don’t know if he can play again this week,” Cho said. “We are waiting for the doctor’s report.”

Pakistan manager Samiullah Khan defended his captain.

“As far as I saw, it wasn’t a deliberate hit. If the Koreans want to complain it is up to them.”

T. Paramalangam, secretary of the Malaysian Hockey Association, told AFP on Saturday that organisers would look into the matter but declined to comment otherwise.

Pakistan went to the top of the standings following their victory.

It was the 2003 champions second straight win in the seven-team tournament following their 2-1 triumph over New Zealand on Thursday.

Pakistan have six points from two games, with Australia and India on four points each.

Pakistan’s Mohd Imran converted a penalty corner in the first minute only for Seong Jung-kang to equalise 11 minutes later.

Pakistan dominated the rest of the half and took a 3-1 lead into the interval with further goals from Shakeel Abbasi and Akhtar Ali.

Jong Hyun-jang led a Korean revival in the second half, converting a 43rd-minute penalty corner.

The goal lifted Korea, who laid siege to Pakistan’s goal. However, despite three penalty corners, Korea were let down by weak finishing as Pakistan held on for victory.

Sunday’s matches features hosts Malaysia taking on India, Pakistan against South Africa and New Zealand playing against defending champions Australia.

Standings after Saturday’s play: (played, won, draw, lost, for, against, points)

Pakistan 2 2 0 0 5 3 6

Australia 2 1 1 0 6 4 4

India 2 1 1 0 4 3 4

South Korea 2 0 1 1 5 6 1

New Zealand 2 0 1 1 3 4 1

South Africa 2 0 1 1 2 3 1

Pakistan beat South Africa for third win on trot
KUALA LUMPUR, MAY 29 (PTI)
Continuing their winning spree, Pakistan recorded their third straight victory outplaying South Africa 2-0 in the Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament here today.

Pakistan played an attractive attacking game full of fluency and flair despite the suspension of their captain Muhammad Saqlain from this match.

The thought of their pivot not being there was no deterent as their upfront men were well nourished by centre half Adnan Maqsood.

There were constant forays from the flanks by Rehan Butt and Shabbir Husain and down the middle domination by playmaker and stand-in skipper Mudassar Ali, playing his first game of the tournament, and striker Shakeel Abbasi.

The three-time champions and the last editions runners up drew first blood in the 24th minute when Abbasi latched onto Dilawar Husain's cross to beat South Africa goalkeeper Chris Hibbert with a solo.

It became 2-0 in the 30th minute when Butt set up by Akhtar Ali cashed on an opportunist moment after a goalmouth scramble.

In the second half South Africa tried in vain to reduce the margin through two penalty corners.

Pakistan nearly got their third goal late in the match but Abbasi was unable to hit past Hibbert after being set up by Tariq Aziz.

With this win Pakistan are on top of the leaderboard with nine points, while South Africa remain with one point from three outings.

In the last game of the day today Olympic champions Australia beat New Zealand by two second half goals.

Brent Livermore and Grant Schubert found the net for Australia after they were held goalless for the entire first half.

Australia are now lying second with seven points from three matches, while New Zealand have just one point from same number of outings.

Malaysia down India with record margin
ANUPAM GHULATI KUALA LUMPUR, MAY 29 (PTI)
Malaysia rode on a second half blitz to rout three time champions India with a record 4-1 margin in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament here today.

The comprehensive win at the Bukit Jalil Stadium was Malaysia's biggest against the eight-time Olympic champions.

Though India held the upper hand in a mediocre first half, they could not go into the break with the lead. The two teams were locked 1-1 at half time.

The midfield committed plenty of unforced errors, in particular centre half Bimal Lakra and the left link Devender Pal Singh who was tried out in this position instead of his normal right half.

Malaysia were the first to score in the 6th minute from a penalty corner awarded after Inderjit Chadha flung himself deliberately at Mohd Fairuz Ramli on the twenty five yard area.

Skipper Kuhan Shanmuganathan, who played for Bangalore Hi Fliers in the inaugural Premier Hockey League in Hyderabad, did not disappoint the home crowd as he beat Devesh Chauhan under the bar with a powerful flick.

However the lead was shortlived as India fought back to get the equaliser three minutes later.

Winger Prabhjot Singh and his Indian Oil team mate Deepak Thakur found their way into the rival circle where Malaysia defender Nor Azlan Bakar committed a foot fault resulting in a penalty corner in favour of India. Captain Dilip Tirkey scored from the set piece after Len Aiyappa's dummy.

There was nothing to sparkle in the remaining period of the session as India failed to take advantage of the time Jiwa Mohan was given temperory marching orders for an infringement.

There were mispasses galore from Lakra and Devender was all at sea.

Right winger Rajpal Singh and Arjun Halappa were not fed accurate passes as the Indian strikers fumbled time and again around the Malaysian circle.

Barring Prabhjot, who made good penetrative moves, there was nothing sizzling in the Indian attacks. His indeed was unfortunately a one man army.

India missed the opportunity to go into the lead shortly before the end of the first half when Dilip Tirkey missed the mark by inches from their second penalty corner.

The visitors were completely outwitted and blanked in the next thity five minutes, as Malaysia moved with full throttle on their flanks against the unsure India defence.

With full support from the midfield, Malaysia forwards Ramli, Azlan Misron, Robert Alcantra and Hairul more often than not wrong footed the Indians, including the dependable Tirkey. Malaysia went 2-1 up when Alcantra seized the ball from an excellent rundown from the left and after dodging past Devinder, hit a rasper from the edge of the circle in the 49th minute.

There was no looking back for the hosts as four minutes later they increased their tally from an indirect penalty corner conversion by Mohd Amin Rahim.

It was another penalty corner goal which was the last nail in the Indian coffin after Aiyappa had body checked Misron.

Shanmuganathan again found the mark with the flick going between Chauhan and Aiyappa in the 64th minute to round off the tally.

India, like Malaysia now have four points, but are placed below them by virtue of an inferior goal difference.

India next play Korea on Tuesday while Malaysia will take on the Asian Games gold medallists tomorrow.
