Re: azlan shah cup {hockey}
Olympic champions Australia scored a goal in the waning minutes to earn a 2-2 draw with Pakistan on Tuesday at the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup field hockey tournament.
The result extended the two teams' unbeaten run and enhanced their chances of qualifying for the finals of the seven-nation tournament on Sunday. Australia took the title in 2004 after beating Pakistan 4-3 in the final.
On Tuesday, Australia found itself trailing in the 3rd minute, after Pakistan's Shakeel Abbasi finished off a pass from Rehan Butt to score his third goal in the competition.
But Pakistan, which has won the tournament three times, could not sustain the early domination as Australia came back steadily to take control of the midfield.
Australia equalized in the 28th minute through a penalty corner strike by Luke Doerner. Pakistan was unlucky not to take the lead at half time when Mohd Imran's penalty corner attempt beat goalkeeper Stephen Lambert but hit the crossbar.
But Imran was not to be denied in the 43rd minute as he struck a penalty corner to put Pakistan up 2-1. Australia then tied the score seven minutes from time when Captain Brent Livermore scored on a set play off a penalty corner.
In Tuesday's other match, Kang Seong Jung scored two goals to lead South Korea to a 4-1 win over Asia Cup champions India.
Len Aiyappa put India ahead with a well struck penalty corner in the 20th minute but South Korea's Kim Kyung Seok drew level, also from a penalty corner in the 33rd minute.
India's game fell apart in the second half as the Koreans used their superior stamina and speed to score three goals in six minutes. Kang netted two of the goals through penalty corners before You Hyo Sik made it 4-1 in the 49th minute to seal victory.
The result was India's second straight defeat after earlier losing 4-1 to Malaysia, and it virtually ended the Indians hope for at least a fourth-place finish in the competition.
Pakistan leads the table with 10 points from four matches, while Australia is in second on eight points and South Korea, third with seven points. India, with just four points from four matches, is in sixth place.
Many teams are fielding untested combinations in the 10-day tournament to prepare for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
India has already booked its World Cup berth, while Australia, New Zealand and South Africa will be looking to secure their berths later this year through continental tournaments. Malaysia, South Korea and Pakistan will compete later in World Cup qualifiers.
Re: azlan shah cup {hockey}
What a match it was. Entertaining hockey at its best. Imran Warsi is showing promise with every game and his goal-a-match ratio surely helps.

Re: azlan shah cup {hockey}
I used to watch hockey in the late 80's. Have any new rules (if any) changed the game significantly? I remember PC direct hits had to hit the board for a goal. Also, do you have to be inside the circle or D to have a goal?
Re: azlan shah cup {hockey}
^-- same rules still..
during this match just now, one of pak players hit a goal from outside the D and it was not given.
Re: azlan shah cup {hockey}
^ Hockey is much faster now then in 80's...i think off side rule is gone too....D rule is still there...i think direct hits still have to hit the board for PC..anyone knows more??
Re: azlan shah cup {hockey}
Pakistan is in the final now..with 13 points....Australia is at 11...& korea 7..
