‘Avatar’ Crashes Friday Box Office with $27 Million

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.cinematical.com/media/2009/12/avatarposter.jpg

Well, those who thought James Cameron’s ***Avatar ***](Search Results for 'avatar' | Moviefone)would limp out of the gate and throw up low, boring numbers on its opening day should sit down and stick a bar of soap in their mouth because the film lived up to its epic expectations by securing a very respectable $27 million on Friday. That number was good enough to give it second place in terms of films that have opened on a Friday in December, behind Will Smith’s I Am Legend, which opened with $30.1 million back in 2007. Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King still holds the all-time record for opening day in December with $34.5 million, though it opened on a Wednesday, not a Friday.

Unfortunately for 20th Century Fox, major storms are hitting the east coast this weekend and that will definitely put a dent in the films final box office take (some are predicting a final total of between $75-85 million). However, extremely positive buzz won’t stop folks from hitting the theaters hard over the Christmas break – a time that saw Cameron’s last film, Titanic, gain 40% on its second Friday and 24% in its second weekend after opening with only $28 million right out of the gate. So expect a slow and steady gain from Avatar, especially as the people who saw it in 3D convince the people who saw it in 2D to fork over some more money for the enriched moviegoing experience.

We’ll be back later this weekend with the film’s final tally. And if you saw the film this weekend, feel free to share your thoughts over here.

i knew it would be a blockbuster ......after seeing the promo

Re: 'Avatar' Crashes Friday Box Office with $27 Million

loved it! James Cameron did it again

Re: Avatar

AMAZING - saw it 3D IMAX - beautifully executed. Some of the images from Pandora are beyond beautiful

Beautifully executed. Strong script. Good Job James Cameron!

Re: Avatar

^are you serious? apart from the die-hard fans who loved it before they even saw it, i haven't read a single review that praises it's storyline, dialogue or acting.

excellent movies are ones that stand the test of time. once this sort of technology becomes more common place and doesn't cost hundreds of millions, avatar will make anyone who takes a peek back in history cringe with how bad it was. that's the problem of cgi, it will eventually become dated so a movie needs more than just pretty visuals.

Re: Avatar

stoppit - depends whether you are animation buff or not. I found it entertaining.

Is it going to get Oscar for acting NO but it's going to steal them all for the animation.

Re: Avatar

oh, i am. given that i was a hardcore gamer back in the day.

i'm sure it's visually amazing. but if you throw $300million at something, it should be. i think the general consensus is that it is all about the visuals. i was surprised that even the score wasn't that well received.

i will be seeing it at the imax at some point. i hope it's better than i expect.

Re: Avatar

$300 mill for James Cameron is peanuts.

His budgets are ridiculous but he always brings some sort of a human touch in his films along with the crazy CGI world. He did through the lead character for this film.

It a worthy watch - as a former gamer you will def enjoy it.

Re: Avatar

FREAKING AMAZING MOVIE...BEST MOVIE OF 2009...and one of the best Movies of the Decade...

FREAKING PHENOMENAL....

ABSOLUTE MUST WATCH

i doubt it. i haven't seen a worthy movie in recent years. to me, avatar spells the death of film-making. not the film itself but everything about the way it's made. but if it hadn't of been this, it would have been some other.

it's a shame since terminator 2 is still one of my favourites.

when i see all the hype and capslocks reviews, all i can think of is this quote from Gladiator, "I think he knows what Rome is. Rome is the mob. Conjure magic for them and they'll be distracted."

Re: Avatar

Superbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb
Amazing movie man, totally new concept, gripping story, kool CGI and the creativity OMG :k: hands down it’s the best movie of the yr n believe m when i say that na coz 4 me Terminator 2, district 9 n star track took the cake earlier.

but this is like totally different which u hvn’t seen before and cameron has dun such an amazing job, kuddos 2 him, watever he touches turns 2 gold. I applaud his decision 2 wait 10 years to make this movie because the technology was not available. in the promos it seems unbelieveable but when u actually start seeing it every thing makes sense n u start believing in pandora n the blue guys n all these amazing creatures n flowers, I m out of words 4 it.

just a word caution it’s a looooooooong movie like 2 hrs and 40 min long and I watched it in IMAX 3D so after like 2 hrs I was having nausea and just wanted 2 throw up, I’ll go for the regular version again next week. so if u hv sumthing like this, avoid the IMAX version. but ya u can only enjoy appreciate the CDI wizardry only in IMAX

Re: Avatar

I jus luv the tiny detail like every native had different tatoos on their backs, how sully's forhead gear changes as he matures as a native or how things glow when touched or stepped on or how much detail every single creature has .................

it's movies like this for which I or any 1 else actually goes 2 the theatre i.e just 2 forget abt the problems n worries of the life

watch it owise u dunno wat u hv missed

Avatar at Imax

On my way to watch Avatar in Imax!
will Post a review when i come back

Re: Avatar at Imax
