**First Test, Darwin, day one: Australia 207; Sri Lanka 43-3 (at close) **

Australia hit back strongly after being bowled out for 207 on the opening day of the first Test against Sri Lanka.

Glenn McGrath marked his first Test match for 11 months with two wickets as the tourists slumped to 43-3 at the close in Darwin.

Chaminda Vaas was the star performer earlier in the day, taking 5-31 as Australia lost their last seven wickets for 30 runs.

Darren Lehmann top scored for the home side with 57, including seven fours.

Sri Lankan captain Marvan Atapattu opted to field after winning the toss, a decision which looked dubious as the home side cruised to 72-0.

But Upul Chandana caught Justin Langer at backward square leg off the bowling of part-time spinner Thilan Samaraweera and Matthew Elliott followed for a single when he edged Vaas to second slip.

Elliott was playing his first Test in more than five years after being called up to replace Ricky Ponting, who is missing the match following a death in his family.

Australia were 80-3 soon after lunch when Matthew Hayden sliced a ball from Vaas to Sanath Jayasuriya at gully after making 37.

It was left to Lehmann and Damien Martyn to rebuild the innings and they did so in relative comfort, putting on 97 in 24 overs and collecting 12 boundaries between them.

Malinga marked his debut with two vital wickets

Their partnership came to an end off the last ball before the tea interval as Martyn failed to control an attempted cut Jayasuriya’s off left-arm spin and was caught by Russel Arnold at point for 47.

Australia’s decline following the resumption was startling as the last six wickets went down for 18 runs in the space of 12 overs.

Debutant Lasith Malinga claimed a notable double success when he trapped Lehmann lbw and three balls later had Australian captain Adam Gilchrist caught behind for a duck.

Shane Warne was run out for two and Vaas removed Simon Katich, the home side’s last recognised batsman, for nine before adding the last two wickets for his eight five-wicket haul in Tests.

McGrath wasted no time in denting Sri Lanka’s confidence as they began their reply, bowling Atapattu for four in the third over.

And the seam bowler, now recovered following ankle surgery, enjoyed further success when Jayasuriya was adjudged lbw for eight.

It took McGrath’s career total to 432 wickets, lifting him above Sir Richard Hadlee and into fifth place on the all-time list.

Sandwiched between his double was the wicket of Kumar Sangakkara, who made an unbeaten 203 in the warm-up game against a Northern Territory XI.

This time he struggled for 17 balls to make two before he was pinned in front by Jason Gillespie, who as a result became the 11th Australian to reach 200 Test wickets.

Sri Lanka eventually decided to send out a night-watchman and Nuwan Zoysa did his job, surviving to the close to make eight not out, with partner Mahela Jayawardene on 12.

hmmmm Aussies looked rusty in Day 1 - or was there some decisions that could have dealt by technology?

but good to see Glenn coming back - taking 2 wickets - McGrath has now career total of 432 wickets - lifting him above Sir Richard Hadlee and into fifth place on the all-time list. :k: Gillespie has become the 11st Australian Cricketer to reach the milestone of 200 wkts in test cricket.

looks like this match will end in 2.5 days.

Is wicket too difficult to bat.

Australia 207 & 103/5 (28.0 ov)
Sri Lanka 97

aussie 130/7

well this new sri lankan fast bowler malinga seems to be a reasonable bowler....his action is said to be similar like thompson and he also has some pace and swing......well i think aussie will win this match because it will be impossible to bat on this pitch as the time passes by....

First Test, Darwin, day two (close): Australia 207 & 201; Sri Lanka 97
Full scorecard

Adam Gilchrist played a fighting captain’s innings to put Australia in a strong position in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Darwin.

He made 80 before being run out in the penultimate over of a second day which again saw wickets tumble.

Australia were finally all out for 201, a lead of 311, after earlier dismissing the tourists for just 97.

Glenn McGrath took 5-32 and Shane Warne picked up three wickets to lift his career total to 520.

Warne now lies second on the all-time Test wickets list, one ahead of Courtney Walsh and only seven behind record holder Muttiah Muralitharan.

McGrath, playing his first Test for 11 months, also made progress, boosting his career total to 435 and moving above Indian Kapil Dev (434) into fourth place.

Resuming on 43-3, Sri Lanka managed to survive for only 25.5 overs with Tillakaratne Dilshan’s 17 the top score in an innings which saw only four batsmen reach double figures.

And it was only the seventh time in their 22-year Test history that they had been bowled out for under 100.

SRI LANKA’S LOWEST TOTALS
71 v Pakistan, Kandy 1994
81 v England, Colombo 2001
82 v India, Chandigarh 1990
93 v N Zealand, Well’ton 1983
95 v S Africa, Cape Town 2001
97 v N Zealand, Kandy 1984
97 v Australia, Darwin 2004

Jason Gillespie began their decline when Mahela Jayawardene was caught by Justin Langer for 14 and McGrath and Warne worked their way through the rest.

Leading by 110 on first innings, Australia soon found themselves under pressure at 14-3 as Chaminda Vaas removed Justin Langer and Matthew Elliott for 10 and nought respectively, and Matthew Hayden fell to Nuwan Zoysa for two.

Elliott’s third ball dismissal completed a miserable Test comeback for the left-hander, who made only a single in the first innings after being picked for the first time since 1999.

Lehmann counter-attacked, hitting eight boundaries in his 58-ball innings, but he was then caught behind off youngster Lasith Malinga, who also accounted for Damien Martyn (seven) in similar fashion.

The home side were 84-5 at tea and they were grateful for a stand of 37 between Gilchrist and Simon Katich either side of the interval.

But Katich fell to leg-spinner Upul Chandana for 15 with the total on 114 and Warne only lasted five balls as Malinga claimed his third victim by winning an lbw decision.

But Gillespie (16) and Michael Kasprowicz (15) supported their captain well to extend the lead past 300.

It took a brilliant piece of fielding to finally bring Gilchrist’s defiant innings to an end.

He was beaten by Jayawardene’s backhanded return to the keeper as he tried to recover his ground having advancing down the picth to a ball from Sanath Jayasuriya.

The final act of the day saw the Australian innings come to an end when Kasprowicz top edged an attempted pull, giving Malinga figures of 4-42 and taking the number of wickets in the match to 30 in six sessions.

Australia lead by 311 runs with 0 wickets remaining

Stumps - Day 2

Malinga Bowled superbly in the absence of Murle(Sri Lankan Star)

And why r u calling this match weird by the way.....just because it is a low scoring match does not mean it is weird....i personally found this match very interesting with a lot of ups and down. There was some good fast bowling from both sides. And tommrow, it would be interesting to see sri lanka respond. And frankly speaking, i don’t think that wicket is that weird either. it is a slow wicket with a variable bounce and it requires batsmen to apply themselves and concenrtate a lot. But there is nothing abnormaly weird with the pitch. I would love to see more test matches on such wickets where batsmen have to apply themselves to score runs and a century means a real century. May be we all are so used to high-scoring matches and batsmen-friendly pitches that any thing different sounds "weird"…..

Yaar, Its a weird match in the sense that not always 30 wickets fall in six sessions. I will agree that there is nothing abnormally weird with the pitch and just as Gilchrist showed, one can score on this pitch.

Yes, that makes sense too. And that is part of the reason why i called it weird. But does me calling it that makes this match any less interesting? No.

First Test, Darwin, day three: Australia 207 & 201 beat Sri Lanka 97 & 162 by 149 runs

Michael Kasprowicz took seven wickets as Australia beat Sri Lanka by 149 runs in the first Test in Darwin.

Chasing 312 for victory on a tough pitch, the visitors were never in the hunt after losing three early wickets.

Kasprowicz claimed the final five wickets to fall to finish with match figures of 7-39.

The only resistance came from Mahela Jayawardene (44) and Tilan Samaraweera (32) but once they went the rest of Sri Lanka’s batsmen offered little.

Glenn McGrath was at his probing best to open the third day with five maiden overs before, but it was Kasprowicz who got the first breakthrough.

He removed Marvan Atapattu and then Kumar Sangakkara was run out.

McGrath’s accuracy was rewarded with the wicket of Sanath Jayasuriya and Sri Lanka’s fate was sealed when the 79-run partnership between Jayawardene and Samaraweera was ended by the veteran paceman.

Shane Warne failed to take a wicket from 19 overs and Jason Gillespie was also wicketless.

Australia: Justin Langer, Matthew Hayden, Matthew Elliott, Damien Martyn, Darren Lehmann, Simon Katich, Adam Gilchrist (captain), Shane Warne, Jason Gillespie, Michael Kasprowicz, Glenn McGrath. Stuart MacGill (12th man).

consulting fees please. :D

if you can't beat them - join'em

how about Gilly leading his side for win? surely Aussies don't have a problem in any slot whatever so - it was great to see Glenn coming back in his form with a bang - utterly the best bowler in the world at the moment - Michael Kasprowicz was even better.

..and this was Australian B side that beat the crap out of Sri Lanka(or anyone else who wanna go up against them)
