Second Test, Cairns, day one: Australia 370-2 (at close) v Sri Lanka

**Justin Langer and Matthew Hayden made centuries as Australia piled up 370-2 on the opening day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Cairns. **

Marvan Atapattu chose to put the home side in after winning the toss and it was a decision he came to regret as the two openers shared a stand of 255.

They were finally parted when Hayden was caught for 117, but Langer batted through the entire day to reach 159.

He also put on 80 with Damien Martyn, who was 56 not out at the close.

Both sides made one change with skipper Ricky Ponting returning for Australia following a family bereavement and Romesh Kaluwitharana coming in for the tourists in place of Russel Arnold.

Atapattu’s decision to bowl first was perhaps understandable, given Sri Lanka’s batting frailty during last week’s 149-run defeat in the first Test.

But his bowlers were unable to provide the cutting edge needed to back up his decision as Australia collected 48 boundaries and two sixes during the day.

Langer outscored Hayden during the morning session as the two openers saw off the new ball and when he had reached 40 he moved into Australia’s top 10 Test run scorers by passing Doug Walters’ career total of 5, 358.

His hundred arrived off 149 balls during the afternoon session and Hayden, who twice cleared the rope as he lifted his scoring rate, joined him on three figures shortly before the tea interval which arrived with the total on 223-0.

It was the 19th Test hundred for both men and the sixth time they had shared a double century partnership, two more than any other pair in history.

Atapattu rotated his bowlers in search of a breakthough and it paid off at the start of the 65th over when Hayden was caught by Sanath Jaysuriya, with off-spinner Thiland Samaraweera the successful bowler.

Seeing Ponting stride to the middle could have done little for their confidence, however, but he only managed a 27-ball cameo before he was caught off paceman Lasith Malinga.

It proved to be Sri Lanka’s final success of the day as Martyn batted with assurance to reach a 58-ball fifty and Langer took his boundary tally to 22 in the final overs of play.

Sri Lanka hit back](BBC SPORT | Cricket | Sri Lanka hit back)

Second Test, Cairns, day two: Sri Lanka 184-2 (at close) v Australia 517 all out

A stand of 138 runs between Marvin Atapattu and Kumar Sangakkara sparked Sri Lanka’s fightback against Australia on day two of the second Test.

Atapattu battled his way to an unbeaten 75 after losing Sanath Jayasuriya to a brilliant catch from Adam Gilchrist.

And he got support from Sangakkara, who was removed by Shane Warne for 74 to leave the visitors on 184-2 at close.

Earlier, Upul Chandana had taken five wickets as Sri Lanka reduced Australia to 517 all out in their first innings.

Damien Martyn was the leg spinner’s first victim, trapped lbw three runs short of a century.

The leg spinner also took the wickets of Simon Katich, Darren Lehmann, who made a half-century, and Shane Warne.

The hosts had resumed on 370-2, but quickly lost day-one hero Justin Langer, the first of four wickets for the impressive Lasith Malinga.

In reply, Sri Lanka reached 67-1 at tea.

Paceman Jason Gillespie took the only wicket, with wicketkeeper Gilchrist pouncing to remove Jayasuriya for 13.

Atapattu and Sangakkara then settled in and scored valuable runs before Warne struck to hand the Australians a morale boost at the close of play.

Sri Lanka hold firm](BBC SPORT | Cricket | Sri Lanka hold firm)

Second Test, Cairns, day three: Sri Lanka 411-5 (at close) v Australia 517 all out

Skipper Marvan Atapattu led the fightback with a knock of 133 as Sri Lanka moved to within 106 runs of Australia’s first innings total.

The tourists resumed on 184-2 and made it to lunch without losing a wicket, putting on 96 runs.

Shortly after the interval, Glenn McGrath removed Atapattu and Mahela Jayawardene fell to Mike Kasprowicz.

But Thilan Samaraweera and Tillakaratne Dilshan took Sri Lanka past the follow-on mark, before Warne snared Dilshan.

It was Atapattu’s 15th Test century and it was achieved by hitting 19 fours in a five-hour innings.

Samaraweera hit his sixth Test half-century but it was a dogged performance coming in just under three hours and included five fours.

He was unbeaten on 53 at the end of play with wicket-keeper Romesh Kaluwitharana on 30 not out despite being hit on the helmet by a Jason Gillespie bouncer.

Light rain in Cairns interrupted play to force an early tea and bad light later brought play to an early close.

Australia build lead](BBC SPORT | Cricket | Australia build lead)

Second Test, Cairns, day four (stumps): Australia 517 & 194-2; Sri Lanka 455

Australia gave themselves a fine chance of a 2-0 series win against Sri Lanka after gaining a 256-run lead with just one day remaining in Cairns.

The home side dominated day four of the second Test, taking the last five Sri Lankans wickets for just 35 and then reaching 194-2 at stumps.

Shane Warne and Jason Gillespie bowled beautifully after the entire first session was lost to rain.

And Matthew Hayden and Damien Martyn batted brightly in the final hour.

After the early weather frustration, the tourists collapsed badly.

Romesh Kaluwitharana was the first to fall, edging Glenn McGrath to Warne at slip to depart for 34.

The other batsman not out overnight, Thilan Samaraweera, then edged Jason Gillespie to Ricky Ponting at second slip having hit 70 in a 199-ball vigil.

The last three wickets all fell on 455.

Matthew Hayden is in sight of a second century in the same Test

Chaminda Vaas was out to the same Gillespie/Ponting combination, Upul Chandana attempted to go down the track to Warne and was well stumped by Gilchrist and Lasith Malinga was run out by Darren Lehmann going for a quick single.

Australia had a first innings lead of 62 and soon began extending that advantage.

Two wickets were lost along the way.

Justin Langer was caught behind by Kaluwitharana off Nuwan Zoysa for eight and Ponting steered an easy catch to gully off the same bowler to fall for 45.

But in the final hour,Hayden and Martyn smashed the Sri Lankan bowlers all around the ground.

Hayden finished on 68 not out, with Martyn unbeaten on 52 off just 55 balls.

The right-hander, out for 97 in the first innings, hit one enormous six off the slow bowler Chandana, and followed up with three majestic consecutive boundaries off Vaas.

Sri Lankan are doing there best to lose this one. God bless them

Australia 517 & 292/9d
Sri Lanka 455 & 107/5 (42.5 ov)

Still 42 overs to go today and 5 wicket left.

YEP.

I must say Test Matches are exciting. Another good one going on.

Sri Lanka is playing just as horribly as pakistani team does at times. They are trying so hard to snatch defeat from a drawn (or a win, had they applied themselves). I was very pleased they way they got rid of Australian tail earlier today, but I guess that was it for joy as far as a Sri Lankan fan goes. Rightnow, it looks almost curtains for Sri Lanka.

once sangakara or chandana r out, the match is gone....
and i doubt srilanka will fight out the remaining 26 overs....

perhaps the moral blow will be in our favor for the asia cup.... :p

Warne equals world record](BBC SPORT | Cricket | Warne equals world record)

Second Test, Cairns, day five: Australia 517 & 292-9 dec drew with Sri Lanka 455 & 183-8

Australia’s Shane Warne equalled the world bowling record with his 527th wicket on the final day of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Cairns.

The leg-spinner moved level with Muttiah Muralitharan when he had Upul Chandana stumped in the final session.

He took 4-69 but his efforts to break the record were in vain as Sri Lanka held out for a draw on 183-8.

Australia, who won the series 1-0, had earlier declared on 292-9 after opener Matthew Hayden made 132.

It was Hayden’s second hundred of the match and included a six and 10 fours, but Warne quickly became the focus of attention once Sri Lanka had begun their second innings 354 runs in arrears.

He was brought on as first change by skipper Ricky Ponting, having already taken the catch to dismiss Marvan Atapattu for nine off Jason Gillespie.

Warne wasted no time in making his mark as Sanath Jayasuriya (22) edged a catch to wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist in the second over after lunch.

The tourists lost three more wickets during the afternoon, but Warne had to wait until the final session to lift his career total to 525 by having Romesh Kaluwitharana caught by Darren Lehmann for 14.

The Sri Lankan batsmen were ringed by close fielders whenever Warne had the ball in his hand and there was a constant buzz among the crowd, who were all desperate to see the 34-year-old make history.

Kumar Sangakkara battled his way to 66 before an attempt to drive Warne brought about his downfall as the ball spun between bat and pad to bowl him with the total on 159.

Muralitharan’s decision not to play in the series had given Warne his opportunity and he was not about to waste it, equalling the record six overs later as Chandana (14) paid the price for straying from his crease as the TV umpire upheld the appeal.

Sri Lanka still had the best part of 10 overs to negotiate but sensible batting by Chaminda Vaas and Nuwan Zoysa saw them to safety, although the latter was dropped at slip by a diving Ponting off Gillespie.

Warne tried every variation at his disposal in a bid to break the record, but will now have to wait until Australia tour India later in the year to try and do so.

By then, however, Muralitharan will almost certainly have increased his total with two Tests on home soil to come against South Africa next month.

Resuming on 194-2 at the start of play, Australia added 98 in 17 overs before declaring.

Hayden reached his century off 142 balls before he was bowled by Muralitharan’s replacement Upul Chandana, who took 5-101 for match figures of 10-210, the first time he has taken 10 wickets in a Test match.
