** Shooting outside Pakistan army HQ **
Gunmen have opened fire near Pakistan’s army headquarters outside the capital Islamabad, military officials say.
Intense firing is still going on after the gunmen tried to enter the heavily armed complex in Rawalpindi, where senior officers are based.
One report suggests guards had fired at a suspected suicide bomber.
The attack follows a series of bombings across north-western Pakistan. On Friday at least 49 people were killed in a blast in the city of Peshawar.
The attacks come amid high security as the army prepares an operation against the Taliban in the tribal region of South Waziristan. High-profile targets
Police official Mohammed Jalil told AP news agency that gunmen drove up to the army compound in a white van just before midday local time (0600 GMT).
They took up positions and fired on the compound, security officials said. One of them threw a grenade.
Roads to the area were sealed off and at least one helicopter was hovering over the compound, witnesses said.
Islamist militants have carried out a number of attacks against high-profile, high-security targets in recent years.
In March this year gunmen opened fire on a bus carrying the Sri Lankan cricket team in the city of Lahore. Six policemen and a driver were killed and several of the team were injured.
In the same month, dozens of people were killed when a police training centre on the outskirts of the city was occupied by gunmen.

He said they were four an after more than a hour fight all four have been killed. Army is not telling their loss but they said that the terrorists have thrown many hand gernades.

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani slammed the attack at Pakistan Army headquarters in Rawalpindi
President Zardari in his statement said such incidents could not weaken governments’ commitment against terrorism.
PML-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Altaf Hussain, Governor Sindh Dr. Ishratul Ibad and other leaders also condemned the incident.
It is sad that these so called Islamists are giving a bad name to my religion. Islam is not a religion of violence and they think they can take Islam in to their hands and do whatever they want.
I just learned that,,, one brigadier and one lieutenant colonel is among the Shaheeds.... This whole case needs to be throughly investigated and really the media needs to be given a sanity pill... As per my understanding, broadcasting everything on television actually gives terrorist undue information, which they then use against the forces...
