Im a british pakistani girl who loves wearing her salwar kameez out and about..shopping…restaurants…cinema…however..now that i have started studying in a predominately white uni i would feel alot more self concious about wearing them there. Where would you wear/ not wear your asian clothes..male replies welcome! ![]()
Re: Asian clothes outside the home…yes..or no??
I wear them everywhere unless it’s at work… work it would be unsuitable cos they don’t conform to the uniform though if i could get matching shalwar kameez for work it might work ![]()
haha...im sure your colleagues will be fascinated :P
Re: Asian clothes outside the home...yes..or no??
They are more than happy for me to do what i want but becuase it has not been done before i dare not push the buttons too much...
Besides Islam permits me to work in uniform so long as i am not immodest.
Hence i do not wear the short sleeved shirt and i always have a black overcoat.... although that itself is not standard issue... but is allowed for obvouis reasons.
Re: Asian clothes outside the home...yes..or no??
I wouldn't, if I didn't want to attract attention (good/bad/any) to myself.
Where I live theres lots of Pakistanis, so I dont feel weird at all wearing shalwar kameez...but in my old neighborhood, i never wore shalwar kameez outside (unless it was to go to a davat and we wer going in car).
Re: Asian clothes outside the home...yes..or no??
I have lived in an all white community for most of my life and that too a mining town
My mum and dad felt it was important for me to know my culture by dressing me in a jospeh and the technicolor dreamcoat style dress and sending me to school on a non uniform day ..
Ohmy word.. did I hate it.. I wear shalwar kameez at home but never feel totally comfortable outside.... still do wear it out .. but normally it is Kurta and trousers/jeans ..
i know what u mean! i think your surroundings have alot a big part to play in what you're comfortable in..for example in my predominately asian college i had no qualms about wearing salwar kameez, and i felt entierly comfortable, however at uni, i would be standing out like a sore thumb and i think its a bit of a comfort blanket to blend in with everyone else when you start at a new place..
Re: Asian clothes outside the home...yes..or no??
In the area I live in there are hardly any desis around. I only wear shalwar kameez when i'm going to a wedding or family event other than that I prefer my English clothes. I've never worn desi clothes to uni. I would've if I wanted to get awkward looks from people.
P.S. This is my opinion
Re: Asian clothes outside the home...yes..or no??
Not many Desis where I live. I wear Western clothes outside....usually shalwar kameez at home. Shalwar Kameez at a Desi daavat.
Re: Asian clothes outside the home...yes..or no??
I wear almost shalwar kameez everyday at home and some times, when I want, I wear shalwar qameez outsides too (even at airport ;) ). I also wore shalwar qameez sometimes when I went to uni :D
Re: Asian clothes outside the home...yes..or no??
yes, why not...i see many pakistani youths wear their traditional dresses everyday here(in uk)...
Re: Asian clothes outside the home...yes..or no??
I only wear desi clothes for weddings or if I am visiting family , I live in a TOTAL desi area(goras are hard to find :D) and you see people in asian clothes MOSTLY but I personally don't see myself walking train station wearing beautiful shalwar kameez
Re: Asian clothes outside the home…yes..or no??
^same here..but i have different reasons…am so not used to wearing shalwar kameez, i usually end up falling when am wearing a shalwar:bummer:…but since shalwar kameez is not a cultural/traditional wear for me, i think am lucky:D
Re: Asian clothes outside the home...yes..or no??
lolz i wore it uni as well i dont care if people stare who gives two hoots and u know wat most of the time neither are they bothered
so true if u’re living in a culturally diverse city:phati:
same goes for the head scarf as well..
Re: Asian clothes outside the home...yes..or no??
Personally talking, have never gotten awkward looks from goray people when in shalwar kameez.
Sadly the ones who give the akward looks are all desis :)
Re: Asian clothes outside the home...yes..or no??
^ I would take out thier eyes... how dare they!
If gorras can't cause trouble why should desis do fitna... Treachery is worst of crimes...
Re: Asian clothes outside the home...yes..or no??
While in Rome , do as Romans do .
dont know if it is treachery, but it is quite confusing.
Btw, it is not the desi men but women/girls
Re: Asian clothes outside the home…yes..or no??
^ Thier probably jealous…
My ancestors i am sure had a different view Namaan if not perhaps Rome would still be top of the world as it stands Rome fell without any major resistance… ![]()
