Ashutosh Gowarikar's - Jodhaa Akbar

Bollywood’s never-ending fascination with Mughal era
Priyanka Khanna - 2/3/2008

New Delhi, Feb 3 (IANS) Epical romances set in the courts of the Mughal rulers have enamoured filmmakers and audiences alike and the fascination continues even today with director Ashutosh Gowarikar mounting magnum opus “Jodhaa Akbar” set for release Feb 15, which marks Valentine’s Day weekend.

Bringing together the hit pair of Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai, the epic will recreate the romance of Mughal emperor Jalaluddin Akbar and Rajput princess Hira Kunwari (Jodhabai) that blossomed from a political alliance more than 450 years ago.

“Jodhaa Akbar” shows how the couple broke cultural and religious barriers and shared a perfect arranged marriage, say the makers of the film.

“The way they handled their relationship is relevant for couples today,” said Gowariker, who shot to fame with 2001 period film “Lagaan” that was short-listed for an Academy Award for the best foreign film.

As is common with most historical movies, certain sections of society are alleging that “Jodhaa Akbar” has distorted historic facts but the film is likely to be released on schedule.

The film is replete with all things associated with the Mughal era including massive battlefield settings with elephants and horsemen, regalia and exotic costumes.

The Mughal era, a period of Muslim rule on the subcontinent that stretched from 1526 to 1707, has had the most influence on the Indian moviemaking industry since it began in the 1930s till today.

That era gives the perfect setting for Hindi mainstream cinema to infuse each frame with lavish sets, ornate costumes, picture-perfect locales, drop-dead gorgeous actors and elaborate song and dance routines.

Films like “Mughal-E-Azam”, “Anarkali” and “Pakeezah” have set standards that are still benchmarks. “Mughal-E-Azam”, which was re-released after it was converted from partial black-and-white into a completely coloured film, went on to become a hit again.

It was the first film to be coloured for a big screen release. The original blockbuster that released in 1960 was in 85 percent black and white and 15 percent colour format. The refurbished version was completely coloured with Dolby-DTS Surround Sound.

“Razia Sultan” and “Taj Mahal” are recent films that tried to recreate the same magic. Some other films that are under production will also give a peek into Mughal era like “Laxmibai”, “Bajirao Mastani” and “Gautam Buddha”.

Even veteran filmmaker J.P. Dutta has been planning to make a movie on the last Mughal king Bahadur Shah Zafar titled “Aakhri Mughal”. But after he burnt his fingers by remaking “Umrao Jaan”, Dutta seems to have kept the project on hold.

Dutta wants Amitabh Bachchan to play the aging king Bahadur Shah Zafar in the film and Abhishek to play son Mirza Mughal.

Re: Ashutosh Gowarikar's - Jodhaa Akbar

Great reviews for JA

i am going to watch it first day first show

Re: Ashutosh Gowarikar's - Jodhaa Akbar

They misscast HR in the movie. Or he should have worn a wig for shoulder cut hair, some extra padding for more flash on the body and a thicker mostasche. Kahein se tou shahenshah lage. Plus, it will be interesting to see the sets, if they match 17th century Mughal Royal taste.

The movie Umrao Jaan was miserably poor from historic point of views. Some shots were too 21st century that I couldn't believe what these dir/producers think of general public. Are viewers that dumb???? A historic epic needs extra extra research and caution in making, atleast it needs to cover basic historical facts and environment.

Re: Ashutosh Gowarikar’s - Jodhaa Akbar

Saw the movie tonite…a great movie and very very well made movie. The only downfall is the length…movie could have been a lot shorter…but it is an extremely well made movie…amazing battle scenes for a bollywood movie..and the scene with Hrithik trying to control the elephant…awesome! :k:

Re: Ashutosh Gowarikar's - Jodhaa Akbar

I saw it to. didn't like it all! It was all about Jodhaa...i felt they were trying to justifying some of her acts. While i dont think be i love or history..Jodhaa wasn't a important figure. Akbar had 3 wives, how come they didnt mention that and revolved around jodhaa only and potrayed her as a larger then life personality...all good, so independent blah blah. And the whole film was like a fairytale which looked as if they were tired didnt want to go into proper research and shoot it lavishly and move on. I knew something like that coming yet i was even more disappointed.

Re: Ashutosh Gowarikar's - Jodhaa Akbar

i know a fair few ppl who walked out of the theatre sayin it was booooring and a waste of money .. so i wudnt bother

Re: Ashutosh Gowarikar's - Jodhaa Akbar

the movie name is jodha akbar so it has to be about joodha!! also yes he had 3 wives but this movie wasn't about them . also she is supposed to be his favourite wife hence historians give her more imp than others and the movie is more of a fiction than history. the director wanted to concentrate on love story.

Re: Ashutosh Gowarikar's - Jodhaa Akbar

^ why did i just know that you would have quoted me. The history which i read (times of india, india times etc) that she was called mariyam after her marriage etc and jodhabai is what she is called in modern times, and this film contradicts the history etc they have portrayed her as if she fell straight from heaven and akbar was lucky to get her...she is portrayed as todays modern women - I cant accept that and its my opinion. I didn't like it how they showed things which aren't there in the history books...and if they make a film based on history then they shouldn't add their own lameness.

Re: Ashutosh Gowarikar's - Jodhaa Akbar

By the way i would say its misleading for people if they don't know about the real history story. so they should have put at least a bit of light on that area...

Re: Ashutosh Gowarikar's - Jodhaa Akbar

so timesofindia and indiatimes is where u get ur history from!!! come on now. i have no problems with u saying u did not like it but the reasons u are giving.. AShutosh spent 4 years doing research the point of the matter is there is not enough documentation reagrding them. would u have been happy if the movie name was maryam akbar!! is that the beef!! and saying that the movie showed her as modern etc that is the again the director's interpretation and seriously nobody in today's world wants to see a meek and submissive woman atleast on screen. women are always shown as spirited and defiant in movies then they are in real life.

Falling from heaven etc jesus this is a bollywood movie!! what do u expect!! the director has said repeatedly he wanted to concentrate on love story not on history and politics. as far as love story goes the movie suceeds it had lot of soul and passion.
