So, how many of you living abroad are ashamed of speaking Urdu out in public places with someone who can speak urdu?
Re: Ashamed Of Urdu?
uff toba..EMM!
i’m not ashamed of speaking urdu!! i speak it all the time at home and outside, and everywhere…
no one understands me…
*somone pass me a tissue - i need to blow my nosey.. *
Re: Ashamed Of Urdu?
hahaha smileyyyy seee I dragged u here too ![]()
Furqan: I am not afraid to speak urdu in public but yea when I am surrounded by goura bandars aur kallu jins (frens) then I avoid speaking any other lang except english b/c I don’t want to offend my frens (who don’t speak urdu). Other than that purely comfortable in speaking urdu ![]()
Re: Ashamed Of Urdu?
you know what i hate EMM…when you’re on the bus or subway, and there’s this group of guys who are speaking really really loud urdu or punjabi, like there’s no one else on the bus except them…aauugghhh..it’s annoying.
but then i laugh inside when they make corny jokes..they don’t know i can understand 'em.. ![]()
Re: Ashamed Of Urdu?
NO, actually the fun part is in school infront of goura teachers. We bunch of desis (all indians, me only paki) would talk in urdu and guys would end up swearing at prof and yet that goura bandar would laugh thinking its a joke ![]()
Re: Ashamed Of Urdu?
there's a lot of them desis where you live?
Re: Ashamed Of Urdu?

No there arent desi around where I live but yeah school there are.
Re: Ashamed Of Urdu?
ohh...this is in general..i didn't even notice.
okay..okay..back to urdu...
hmm..i find it annoying when people speak a foreign language in front of me ...really loudly like they're talking long distance to their relatives on the phone..
Re: Ashamed Of Urdu?
I
do not have a complex of inferiority and feel very much proud of speaking my language Urdu even in public. That shows them we are better since when needed, I can speak to Public in English too making them feel jealous and on top of that suspicious and worried about what I was talking behind their back ![]()
That is fun I tell yaa ![]()
Re: Ashamed Of Urdu?
well it's fine to speak Urdu AQ..i'm not saying that you shouldn't...but keep your voice to a normal level.
isn't it annoying when someone's speaking a language you cna't understand..and is pratically yelling, instead of talking? so just imagine someone that doesn't understand urdu..
Re: Ashamed Of Urdu?
exactly my point. I love to annoy the hell outtaa’em ![]()

Re: Ashamed Of Urdu?
Ashamed of URDU?? I wish I could speak this beautiful language (fluently that is). I've been out of Pakistan for so long that my first language has become English. When I speak Urdu, it sounds like I'm a foreginer. The irony is that I'm a 100% Pakistani when it comes to thinking (about social issues), acting (eg. Spitting on the side of the road (like a pashtun), and patriatism.

Re: Ashamed Of Urdu?
I loveeeeeeeeeee to speak my broken urdu in public. Good practise. It's great when you want to complain about how expensive stuff is and you dont want the cashier to hear you. grin

Re: Ashamed Of Urdu?
i think its only the south asians who have issues with speakin their lingo in foreign lands especially UK, Canada and America. I remember teachers at my kid sis' school used to give advice to immigrant parents at parent-teacher meets, on how important it is to speak ure native language at home so the child does not forget it's identity, culture, roots etc... english they will eventually learn, their mother tongue, be it Urdu, punjabi, tamil etc, they wont get many chances or places to pratice if not done at home.
needless to say, not may folks took the advice, which is very sad.
Oriental immigrants are the ones to look upto .. honestly.. these kids KNOW who they are, there's no rush to quit speakin their lingo once they get off the plane... speak cantonese, jap, mandarin amazingly well, even tho its been donkey yrs since they immigrated... good self esteem, balanced lifestyle, clever thinking and lots of patriotism.
Re: Ashamed Of Urdu?
