has shown that he is going to solidify the middle order which we had thought Umar Akmal will do. Umar Akmal failed to do that because of lack of patience (probably gets worked up by opposition’s sledging) and plays rash shots very frequently. So far Asad has shown patience, doesn’t play much uppish shots and has no problems grinding it out. I’ll say thank you for your efforts Misbah (after the world cup ;))
Re: Asad Shafiq
Yes, very impressed by the youngster! Some of on-side shots he played today reminded me of Tendulkar from 2003 QF.
Re: Asad Shafiq
Absolutely. Asad adds to Younis+Misbah for the remainder of Younis and Misbah's careers. Against YK and misbah need to prepare their replacements in the middle orders...I think some one like Azhar ali may need to be tried for the middle order in some games to see if he and asad can make it out there....
Re: Asad Shafiq
Disagree
Asad Shafiq has impressed but he is still learning and is not the finished article by any means + relatively inexperienced
Does not mean we should show Misbah the door! Age should not be a factor. Misbah has been in good form over the past 6-8 months and I think he should carry on playing for another year or so
We are all so impatient..
Re: Asad Shafiq
I still maintain Ahmed Shehzad is a class batsman (only saw him couple of times).
Re: Asad Shafiq
Talent alone is not enough to succeed at this level. You need good temperament (patience + calmness under pressure + ability to stay at the wicket) as well. Imran Nazir had the same problem
I am sure Shehzad will get his chance in the future but he must not play again in this world cup.
Re: Asad Shafiq
^Agreed. Shafiq, unlike other Pakistani talents is calm and composed, and seems to possess good technique. I'd have him over Ahmed Shehzad any day.
Re: Asad Shafiq
Please NO to the bozo shehzad! Shafiq might not be the flashiest player in the world, but the most important thing is that he makes the most of his opportunities and doesn't give his wicket away. Commitment and fight are rare qualities in any Pakistani batsman and he is showing it despite the fact that he was sitting on the bench behind the strokeless wonder Shehzad.
Re: Asad Shafiq
so far hes done a great job at the cease and hopefully this momentum can carry through the crucial QFs and continue on to the next rounds.
Hes made a steady ave of 30 to 40 runs without risky shots and he is played the ball well today on this slow R presada track.
Re: Asad Shafiq
yup mashallah the youngster asad shafiq is doing very well. i hope he does more better in upcoming matches. ameen
Re: Asad Shafiq
I agree we are probably more impatient than the batsmen at crease
but Misbah has served well, he had good last 6-8 months in ODIs, he can serve in Test matches but the calmness, grinding out, fight Asad has shown under pressure at this level is to be credited. We need to be looking ahead.
PS: I hope this does not jinx him ![]()
Re: Asad Shafiq
What a Player he is ......Calm and Cool headed Masha Allah :)
Re: Asad Shafiq
agreed. :k:
Re: Asad Shafiq
Well i don't Know about u Folks but To me this gut showed yesterday that He can Play swing ..... The Way He Played a few cover Drives off Tait was a sign of a assured batsman with sound technique ...... The flick shows He watches the Ball Til the last minute ..... Only against Spinners He Played at times a Bit uppishly maybe due To His smaller stature ..... The sign that He can handle Pace and Swing is something rarely seen since Inzi's demise
I Hope he's given a long Run To learn and Show what He has To offer To (at Times) a fragile batting order
Insha'Allah he'll have a bright future
Re: Asad Shafiq
Asad is very impressive indeed. Great addition to the batting line up.
Re: Asad Shafiq
Asad Shafiq is a very good batsman but not a replacement for anyone, atleast at this very moment. A couple of good innings doesnt make someone a permanent fixture in a team. Ahmad Shehzad played well in New Zealand and then smashed a century in one of the warm up games and everyone was so happy that we found a good opener finally but look where he is now and every one now thinks he should stay there.
But Asad Shafiq looks good enough to play many matches in future for Pakistan. God has always been kind to Pakistanis as far as cricket talent is concerned. We can always somehow produce a gem of a player from now where. Even after Younis and Misbah leave we got Ahmad Shehzad, Asad Shafiq, Umar Amin, Azhar Ali etc to replace them. Out of all these players Asad perhaps has the most air tight technique which would serve him well when he plays on seaming tracks where most batsmen from sub continent are exposed.
As far as him not being a finished article is concerned, well who is a finished article anyway ? We dont have qualified coaches in first class level to guide youngsters. The qualified coaches are sitting at NCA and they take players under their wings who are either already in the team or about to make it to the team. Asad Shafiq is as close to the finished article as you can get out of that system. The rest he'll just have to learn by trial and error while playing internationally cricket.

If Captain is suggesting that Misbah be shown the door and Asad take his spot...then yes I disagree. Asad actually needs to play alongside both Younis and Misbah and get ready. That is not happening this year. Give him another couple years and let Misbah and YK play along him.

What I meant was before we can make a reasonable judgement of his batting skill and technique, Asad needs to play against different opposition on different pitches in different conditions. He seems to have a good temperament for sure.
Re: Asad Shafiq
*Some idiots were calling him a "test player" after the Zimbabwe innings. I shudder to think of what T20 cricket has done to the brains of these cricket "fans", really.
He is a solid batsman and should stay in the team through the rest of the tournament.*
Re: Asad Shafiq
Have not seen Azad Shafiq play. From the posts here, he is a grinder like Misbah and Younus. Do you guys need 3 players who grind it out? Isn't that one too many?
