BCCI faces its toughest challenge
Anand Vasu
April 3, 2007

Of all the challenges the Board for Control of Cricket in India has faced in the recent past, this could turn out to be the toughest one. When the working committee of the BCCI meets on April 7, following the meeting of the review committee the day before, they will have to choose between the leadership of the Indian team - Greg Chappell and Rahul Dravid - and the senior players. The division is sharp, complete and has reached a point of no return.
Cutting to the chase, the issue is a simple one. There’s a coach who wants a team he can take control of, and mould according to his vision. There are a group of players who would prefer a coach they can control. And there is a board that would prefer to have control over both of these factions.
From all accounts, Chappell’s report, due to be submitted to the board before April 6, will be scathing in its criticism of the attitude of the senior players including Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh. It is learnt that Chappell, and some members of the board, believe that the return of Ganguly, and later on Tendulkar’s captaincy aspirations, had a destabilising effect on the team, forming groups within the eleven and perhaps stifling the growth of some of the younger cricketers trying to make a mark.
Although Ganguly has scored runs since his return to the one-day team, there is a belief that, on occasion, he may have been batting more to retain his place in the team than in the best interests of what the situation demanded. The reports that Chappell and Sanjay Jagdale, the team manager in the Caribbean, present are likely to point to instances where, for example, instructions sent out to Ganguly asking him to accelerate were ignored.
Meanwhile, almost the entire team, and it is believed that all but Irfan Pathan and Sreesanth have reached the end of the tether with Chappell, have rallied together against Chappell and Dravid and want Tendulkar to take up their case to the board. If they had their way, Tendulkar would be the next Indian captain.
“Give us a foreigner, give us an Indian, give us anyone but him,” said one player about Chappell on condition of anonymity. “Chappell was a great player, he’s a brilliant batting coach, but he has not done any good for this team. He has no respect for the players and looks to blame one of them any time the team loses. A coach is supposed to give the players confidence, not create insecurity in the team.”
And this is not an isolated feeling. “Does he understand the pressure Tendulkar is playing under before he questions his fitness or attitude?” asked another player. “Remember one thing, coaches come and go, but the boys are what is important. We have to play with each other through our careers.”
When the players speak of Chappell, the words “manipulative” and “untrustworthy” repeatedly come up. What is even more worrisome, though, is the sense that several members of the team have lost faith in their captain. There is a strong belief among the senior group that Dravid had bought into Chappell’s ways too much, and had “not stood up” for them more until recently, when he backed Sehwag and Harbhajan against Chappell’s wishes. A direct fall-out of this is that the players want Tendulkar to take up their cause with the board president, and even take on the reins of the captaincy he relinquished years ago. It’s been about two months since Tendulkar was made vice-captain, and there has been every indication since that he was ready to take up the hot seat, should the occasion arise.

Meanwhile Dravid retreated with his wife and young son to a beach in Kerala, far from the action that is happening across the corridors of power in Indian cricket. It might not come as surprise if he politely but firmly turns down the captaincy even if it was offered to him again.
In all this, the role of Jagdale will be critical. In the case of what has become Chappell’s word vs that of the players, the report of Jagdale, who is seen to be both fair and apolitical, will carry weight. It is understood that Jagdale was at the very least surprised, and at worst shocked by the attitude of some of the players during the World Cup. Whether he will put forward these views to the BCCI remains to be seen.
While speculation has reached fever pitch, it is becoming clear that there is as yet no consensus among the powers that be about the way forward. “There has been no decision taken yet. We have not received any reports and till we meet the coach and manager and receive their reports there is no question of deciding what the course of action should be,” a top functionary of the board said. “All these leaks and the misinformation coming out in the media only undermine what we are trying to do.”
There’s an uneasiness about the team that has virtually ensured that they cannot play as a unit. It is up to the committee to find out whether this has been caused by Chappell - and his tendency to speak rather freely against the players to members of the press, and the selection committee - or by players hanging on to their own best interests rather than the team’s cause. .
While it is untrue that Chappell has indicated to the board that he does not wish to continue as coach, it is also fair to assume that he will not take the job if the status quo is maintained. There are stories doing the rounds that the objections of former cricketers - some of whom will be giving their views to the BCCI on the afternoon of April 6 - and factions of the board are more against Ian Frazer, the assistant coach, than Chappell. But, at least at the moment, no preconditions - like Frazer’s exit - have been made to Chappell in any parley the board has had with Chappell since the World Cup. One thing is clear: after submitting his report on April 6, Chappell won’t be hanging around in a South Mumbai hotel room, armed policemen outside. He will be out of the country, awaiting the BCCI’s decision.

One of the prime reasons why the board has been unable to reach a decision on the immediate course of action is that they are divided among themselves. There are those who believe that Dravid has done no wrong and must go on. There are some that believe that some of the senior players are not pulling their weight, and are the real problem. There are still others who believe that the simplest thing to do would be to get rid of Chappell and move on - where to, is another matter.
There is also a school of thought that believes that Sunil Gavaskar might do the job better, if there is need for a change, and it is believed - despite his extensive television commentary commitments - that he is not averse to the idea, however incredible that may seem. That might just suit the board perfectly, for there are few in India who will publicly criticise Gavaskar, even if the team fails under his tutelage.

What it will all boil down to, in the end, is what Sharad Pawar, the president, believes. Pawar, whose not inconsiderable duties as federal minister for agriculture have often led to a situation where he could not have been as hands-on as a board president should have been, is believed to rely heavily on certain trusted lieutenants for intelligence on what is happening. In recent times though, troubled as they are, he has been conspicuously present in the cricketing public eye, and recently said, “First we have to decided if we want to change the coach. If we want to, then we’ll decide who will do the job better.”

Mumbaia Lobby at work… I think these Seniors have conspired to lose games so that they can get rid of Chappel. Now I really want Chappel and Dravid to be at the helm and kick our these no-performing idiots.

Re: As I said earlier... get ready for Sachin as Captain

I am wondering why and when Irfan Pathan decided to rally behind Chappell since, according to Greg himself, Pathan was deemed as 'unfit' for crucial encounters earlier this year and was purposely benched even though there were reports of him stating that he was fit to play.

Yes siree bob; cricketers continue the tradition of labeling themselves greater than the sport.

Why even bother with the coaches, and all?

Re: As I said earlier… get ready for Sachin as Captain

For the first time, I am feeling ashamed of being a citizen of Mumbai…blame Sharad Powar and Maharshtra dominated BCCI if Tendu or Gangu are made captain.

It’s crystal clear now “senior mafia” of Indian team are working day and night to further their stay…We can’t get rid of them…let’s learn to live watching them and some here and there performances of these senior ***** :teary1:

Re: As I said earlier... get ready for Sachin as Captain

This reminds me of a phase in Pakistan cricket when one captain was sacked and replaced by another who could not even make it in first 11. Salim Malik, Rashid Latif, Moeen Khan, all were brought into team and made captain.

Re: As I said earlier... get ready for Sachin as Captain

f&b,
There are few things which i would like to point out.
1) If Chappel was so disappointed with the team, he should have resigned, taken up the matter with the BCCI and could have made a big story with his friends in media. He didnt do any of the things, may be out of fear of his inability and bungling that he did with a relatively good team he had when John right left. Few of his blunders follows,
a) The use of Pathan, he was and is a good prospect for indian cricket, but he used him too much. Asking him to come one down and play like a one down is little too much. Chappel made a big joke of Pathan.
b) His constant shift in batting orders of regular players, he may had the right arguments but it never really worked out.
c) His decisions and dravids in crucial matches on winning toss. Which was sometimes really atrocious.

2) Chappel had a relatively young team when sachin and gangs were not playing in the 11 for various reasons. What did he made with that. Only when Sachin returned that India was winning again.

3) If Sachin was interested in opening and he felt comfortable in that position then why dont he allow it. Look at australia , they play their best three or four in the top 4. When uthappa came why was he allowed to be one down. It was actually two wickets for nothing.

Honestly Chappel was unable to draft a proper team with the resources given. May be we dont have a good bench strength (this team was even slightly better than the previous team that went to the final of the last world cup-in paper at least ), but given what it is, he made a mess of it. He may had the best reasons but the way he went about it and drafted the team, made it useless.
I think what is best for Indian cricket is to retire off ganguly, sachin and sack chappel. Give a stern warning to the youngsters(yuvraj, dhoni and bhajji) to perform or ship out.
Note. when sacking ganguly, we should allow for the bongs to secede from India and join Bangla desh. I dont think Mumbiate will trouble so much like the bongs when sachin is out. Its the mumbiates who first booed sachin.

Re: As I said earlier... get ready for Sachin as Captain

Chappell is a total Control Freak. And the old buddy club mafia is not better.
One silver lining for india is atleast they have stability in their board.

Fascinating to see that things across the border are quite similar. We are south asian of a very close breed after all.

Re: As I said earlier... get ready for Sachin as Captain

The newly formed ICL (India Cricket League) will kill BCCI in three years. India just woke up.

Re: As I said earlier... get ready for Sachin as Captain

^ Exactly. I think Indian ppl have realized that they need to control their own future in sports ateast for now.
I hope something like this can happen in Pakistan as well.

Re: As I said earlier... get ready for Sachin as Captain

This article actually seconds Chappell's report that SENIOR PLAYERS are the real problem. I am not sure why BCCI want to remove DRAVID and install another captain? I guess DRAVID and DHONI are only 2 players with secured position in the team.

Indian team is going through the phase that Pakistan went through after 2003 WC. Pakistan did the right thing and got rid of seniors (although they went wrong somewhere b/w 2003 and 2007) .

Re: As I said earlier... get ready for Sachin as Captain

I disagree with Chappell report that senior players are the cause of defeat in the world cup 07. This kind of analysis is done before the mega event or perhaps after the loss of a series (southafrica). If Chappell was so aware of this problem he should have voiced his opinions before the team was selected for the mega event.

bottom line is that coach in-ability came out full blown on his face, because he wasn't able to devise a plan; I have heard on "Radio voice" that Chappell said he wanted to bowl after winning the toss but some senior players were against that, this is just a false reason, and shedding responsibility "Hey I told you so.." plus Chappell wont resign coz he will be paid more to leave the job, in any case its win-win for Coach Chappell.

Preemptive attack from Sachin … let the game begin !!!

It hurts that coach has questioned our attitude’ - Tendulkar

In a statement that is likely to have a large bearing on the immediate future of Indian cricket, Sachin Tendulkar has revealed that India’s cricketers were most disappointed with Greg Chappell, the coach, for questioning their attitude.

In a rare public outburst, Tendulkar, not known to air his views on controversial issues, took umbrage at the criticisms against him and the players. " Paani sar se ooncha ho gaya hai ( Things have gone a bit too far to keep quiet.I’ve given my heart and my soul for 17 years. No coach had mentioned even in passing that my attitude was not correct," Tendulkar told the Times of India. “Cricket has been my life for all these years and will always be,” he said.

This outburst comes on the wake of reports that many members in the team have rallied together against Chappell and Dravid and want Tendulkar to take up their case to the board. Cricinfo had reported on the crisis in the team , one largely owing to the rift between Chappell and the senior players, and Tendulkar’s statements reinforce the players’ stance.

“Tell me, the world has gone on talking about all this [our defeat and exit] but has anybody spared a thought for us?,” asked an emotional Tendulkar. “Did they try to find out what we have been going through?” Tendulkar was quoted as saying.

Tendulkar spoke about how disappointed the players were at the early exit from the World Cup. “I am shattered beyond words and I feel helpless. I’ve never felt so bad in my entire career.” he added. “No matter how many Tests or one-day series you win, nothing else even comes close to a World Cup triumph. The World Cup was our passion, our collective goal, our dream and that has been shattered. And we all are terribly disappointed over it.”

Tendulkar took responsibility for the World Cup debacle but responded to what he perceived as a slight to his commitment. “Again, it’s not that we are defending ourselves. We do realise that we played badly and, as a team, we take full responsibility for that. But what hurt us most is if the coach has questioned our attitude.”

BCCI’s working committee meets on April 7, following the meeting of the review committee the day before. It is expected that Chappell’s report, due to be submitted to the board before April 6, will be scathing in its criticism of the attitude of the senior players including Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Harbhajan Singh. The working committee meeting will be attended by BCCI’s office-bearers and seven former captains, including Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Ravi Shastri and S Venkatraghavan.

Re: As I said earlier... get ready for Sachin as Captain

No matter what...BCCI will most likely give the boot to Chappel.
It is convenient for everybody....he is a gora...does not belong to any faction...so there will be no trouble...give him the boot and make it seem that action has been taken...while Tendulkar/Gangu will remain intact in the team. Tendu will most probably handed the captaincy for his brilliant DUCK against Sri Lanka that took India out of the WC.

Re: As I said earlier... get ready for Sachin as Captain

Chappel shud have known that its not the professional australians he is coaching who give their 100%, players have been doing what they are used to do.

Look at Indian and Paki players they look so out of shape, even Lankans are 10 times fitter than them.

Re: As I said earlier... get ready for Sachin as Captain

U mean Chappel should continue. That would be a disaster. We have given him close to three years to turn around a team. What can he achieve which he didnt achieve in this three years. He is incapable of taking care of the team, either he is not fit or Indian team is not fit for him. But since BCCI is paying, they have the right to boot him off.
I dont have any sympathy for him, Indian team is better off without his esteemed service.

Re: As I said earlier... get ready for Sachin as Captain

^In my opinion, having Chappel or not having Chappel will make ZILCH difference to the Indian team.
Sehwag will not become Dravid OR the choker Tendulkar will not magically transform into reliable Steve Waugh if Chappel is replaced by another coach.

I am blaming Chappel may be 10% for India's debacle, but 90% it is players like Tendu and Ganguly , who have been playing for 2 decades that should be blamed. Now don't give me ...oh but Gangu score 80 against bermuda or 50 against BD stuff....He is just not cut out to deliver when it matters most.

One thing I can safely say in favor of Chappel is that he is not allowed to be ruthless in the desi setup. After all the hoopla over Ganguly, do you think Chappel would have any guts to do anything about any non-performing "stars".

Re: As I said earlier... get ready for Sachin as Captain

Came across this funny email forward the other day....

Who are the 2 people responsible for India's early exit from the world cup?

1) Everybody knows this...It's Indira Gandhi for creating Bangladesh.

2) This one was new though, Hanuman ji for not destroying Lanka completely.

Re: As I said earlier... get ready for Sachin as Captain

Sorry to say I dont find much of humor in it.

Re: As I said earlier... get ready for Sachin as Captain

There was a comedy show on some Indian channel couple of days back.

The guy goes, news papers these days squeeze the headlines too much into each other that the reader gets confused. He made many funny ones, but this was the highlight of the joke.

After Sehwag got married recently the headline was:

Sehwag honeymoon kay liye Goa jaayeingay

Underneath it there was another heading which reads:
**
Pathan ko bhi moqa milay gaa**

Re: As I said earlier… get ready for Sachin as Captain

^ Now that was funny :hehe:

Re: As I said earlier... get ready for Sachin as Captain

Possibly unrelated but this reminded me of the headlines in the evening newspapers in Delhi...one such eveninger is "Sandhya Times". This paper is usually sold at traffic stops during late afternoon and evening and survives on sensationalizing news to make it seem like it is breaking a major news update during the day.

So one day, some years ago, while waiting at a traffic stop in Delhi I noticed that the newspaper displayed a major headline on the front page - Rekha ne aatmhatya kiyaa (Rekha commits suicide)

I immediately bought it...on reading the news...it turned out that the Rekha in question was a resident of Shahadra (a delhi suburb).
