That is paranoid thinking. If Pakistan ever is destabilised enough to require foreign intervention, by then it would be too late to prevent nukes falling into the wrong hands.
The US's interest in the Indo-Pak rivalry is to maintain the balance and make sure neither one destabilises the other - that's why you see both sides being played off against each other, weapons sold and training given to both armed forces. ....
Correcto! Conspiracy nutz would disagree though! unfortunately.
....It needs to maintain Indian stability (as a counterweight to China) and to maintain Pakistani stability (to contain nukes and nuclear knowledge).
Correction re: India.
Americans view India as military state responsible for keeping peace in the Indian ocean. Counter weighting China is an old theory that went through the window when the whole Chinese nation became Wal Mart supplier. India has faithfully handled its responsibilities in the Indian Ocean.
Correction re: Pakistan
Americans view Pakistani military as responsible for keeping peace on its "Western" borders and in Arabian Sea. We handled our responsibilities faithfully until 1990s. Then we became too much Islamized and started forgetting that Pakistan and Pakistan's role comes first and Islam comes second. As a result we are paying a heavy price in FATA. This is our own mistake, and we'll come out of it once the Pakistani society and military is cleansed of Islamist generals (both active and retired).
Correction re: nukes
The West practically gave the nukes away to both Pakistan and India. None of them was dragged through dung of international sanctions the way some other countries are being put through.
Why do the West (especially UK and USA) treat Indians and Pakistanis different from Iran and other pipsqueaks. Well the answer is rooted deep in the history of the subcontinent and thus deserves a separate thread.
