Army Op in FATA

It had to happen:
**
Pakistani troops have fought a ferocious gun battle with tribesmen close to the Afghan border. **

At least eight soldiers were killed in the drive against fugitive Taleban and al-Qaeda members, a military spokesman said. He believed 24 suspects had died.

Local residents reported heavy gunfire from both sides throughout the day.

Pakistan has conducted several recent operations against suspects believed to be hiding in the area. A similar US operation is under way in Afghanistan.

“We believe that 24 suspected terrorists have been killed,” military spokesman Major General Shaukat Sultan told the Associated Press.

He said most of those killed were apparently Pakistani tribesmen suspected of sheltering the militants, but several were also believed to be foreigners presumed to be al-Qaeda members.

*Machine guns *

The BBC's Zaffar Abbas in Islamabad says it was the fiercest clash between the security forces and pro-Taleban tribesmen since October, when eight foreign militants and two soldiers were killed in the remote border area.

Officials say the fighting started soon after paramilitary forces moved into a village near the town of Wana in the South Waziristan region to arrest local tribesmen who had been accused of providing shelter to al-Qaeda militants.

But they came under attack from two directions as they entered the area and responded using light machine guns and mortars.

It resulted in a pitched gun battle that went on for more than four hours.

Local residents say troops cordoned off the area.

"We are not allowed to go out of our homes," one resident, Qasim Khan, told the Associated Press.

Firing stopped, to be followed by a standoff between soldiers and tribesmen, local journalists said.

Our correspondent says that it is not yet clear if the security forces were able to arrest the wanted tribesmen or any foreign militants.

*US hunt *

The latest military operation came a day after President Pervez Musharraf issued an ultimatum to "foreign" fugitives to surrender.

He told tribal elders in Peshawar that the authorities were determined to flush militants out of the area - with or without the support of local leaders.

South Waziristan is part of Pakistan's western tribal areas - semi-autonomous states which are often described as "no-man's land" - and where the local population is suspected of being sympathetic towards al-Qaeda and the Taleban.

Some tribal elders are angry at what they see as an attack on the autonomous status of the tribal areas - but President Musharraf says the presence of al-Qaeda and other militants is a threat to the security of both Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Tuesday's offensive comes on the eve of a two-day visit to Pakistan by US Secretary of State Colin Powell, who is also due to visit Afghanistan.

Across the border in Afghanistan, US forces have also begun a new hunt for al-Qaeda elements.

Pentagon officials told the BBC that the latest offensive, Operation Mountain Storm, could ultimately involve several thousand troops, as well as supporting helicopters and aircraft.

The BBC's Pentagon correspondent, Nick Childs, says it has long been thought that Osama Bin Laden and elements of al-Qaeda are hiding in the mountainous region separating Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The dictator should use more brain than muscles if he doesn't want to have another Bangladesh to the east of Durand line.

Eight soldiers had to lose their lives.

shawaiz

whoa lemme get it straight, did the govt not ask the tribesman to hand over these ppl like acchay bacchay? there was no action from the FATA folks in response

If in these gunfights, it is proven that these tribals were providing shelter to foriegn fighters, then they need some major thapraakh-cheeni and kaan-marrori

it also appears that the soliders were fired upon, so its not like big bad military machine is harassing innocent bystanders.

as I have said before, they tribals should behave, be acchay bacchay, use their brains for a change and hand over the foriegn fighters as asked, or be ready to receive some chitrol.

what about those killed by al kayda, did they deserve to die?

P.S. the al kabongs i mean el kayda folks have killed enough people..I dont think the only purpose to capture these byatches is to appease US, these byatches are dangerous to an average Pakistani as well and thus the military is doing this to also protect our people from el kabong..Noble mission.

if there are more foriegn fighters found and the tribals continue to use their butts to think, I suggest a gentle, precise and careful application of a daisy cutter.

Pakistani troops should be able to go anywhere in Pakistan without getting attacked - they are, after all, responsible for the defence of every inch of Pakistani soil. Those 8 soldiers died, but now the government's influence over its own territory is more secure, with the death of 24 violent people who were willing to take up arms against the government.

Pakistan is today just that litte bit more secure, and that gladdens me. I salute our dead soldiers for the sacrifice they made.

Ditto :k:

OBL and his pals should go home to Saudi and face the music there. Anyone sheltering him is bringing harm to the nation’s values and interests while OBL’s countrymen are more interested in racing horses and buying football clubs.

Indeed, they sacrificed their lives for their country and their people.

Army's killing of its own people is not something a rarity in Pakistan. The hands of this army are red with the blood of hundreds of thousands of innocent Baloch, Pakhtuns, Sindhis, Bengalis, Mohajirs and even Punjabis. Whatever is going on in FATA is a consequence of army's wrong policies and the whole nation is paying the price with its blood. I don't know whether foreign terrorists are hiding in FATA and if yes than why the tribes are reluctant to hand over them, may be these tribes have never heard of the U-turn policy or Pakistan first policy, these policies are normally used by the magicians of GHQ as a last resort to save their skins from Americans and to make fool this nation. One thing is sure, up until just a few months ago these so-called foreign terrorists were enjoying the full support of the army and the army only dumped them when the Americans twisted its arms. It's not going to surprise me if OBL sleeps with Mushy aka palloo miaN in his bed. It is the army that needs to learn to live like good guys, not the normal civilians of Pakistan.

well if these tribesmen are indeed hiding foriegn fighters then they can not be considered "normal" civilians of Pakistan.

Ok Shawais, why don't you give us an example that Pakistan as a nation could follow? Saudi Arabia? Dubai? Taliban? Palestine? Iraq?

Let's have some practical answers for a change I'm all ears.

I think the consequences of this operation will not be good...first the human cost..the deployment of huge numbers of Pakistani and Afghan-US troops on the border has shattered the lcoal economy of the area..many civilians have been killed as well..

On another level..locals logic is quite straight forward that is: for 23 years Pakistan called those "foreign fighters" Mujahids and now at a wink of Uncle Sam's eye they've become terrorists.

Well no...at the wink of the Saudi's eyes they became terrorists many years ago. That's why they need to hide out in Afghanistan instead of Jeddah I guess.

Army has dug its own hole. But as hard as this maybe, this u-turn is the only way that pakistan can join the list of civilized nations. I just hope the next step is getting rid of colonial laws and increasing provincial autonomy. If that does not happen, then pakistan's future will remain uncertian.

What makes you so sure that the Army is not helping in hiding these foreign terrorists? We all know for a fact the attachments the military have to majority of these Jihads and terrorists. For all we know it might be the military hiding them and then the military playing cat and mouse with the Americans when it comes to catching them.

Majority of the foreign terrorists and their heads were arrested in major cities not the FATA. This is just an excuse to cover their naked behinds.

The question then is that why didn't Pakistan listen to the Saudis? Why didn't you listen to the Saudis Xtreme bhai? I thought Taliban were good guys remember?
