Quite a generalization - and one which US/Canadian Muslims would take exception with.
First of all, there are Muslims with differing levels of practice, i.e. both the devout and the lapsed, no matter where you go, including so called Muslim countries.
I can’t speak for UK Muslims, but here on our side of the pond, the general acceptance and accomodation we have to practice and show pride in Islam is very generous. Truth be told, there are no greater defenders of equality than US/Canadian democratic systems which allows Muslims here to freely practice their faith and turn to political/judicial intervention to secure those rights.
It may be that we’re more comfortable in our Muslim identity within the greater society that we live in, so that our identity as a Muslim is connected to our practice, without needing to broadcast it. Announcing that I am Muslim doesn’t make me a good Muslim - my deeds/aamaal make me a good Muslim - and the judge of my deed is Allah, not others.
