My mother is a working woman, my elder sister works on and off because my brother in law is in the government service which has transfers and postings to it. My other two sisters intend to work in the future. My family is full of doctors and since my mom and sisters are doctors i have an idea of how serious are young women about their profession.
When my elder sister was studying in one of the best medical universties of Pakistan, the strength of her class was around 500 out of which around 350 were girls. Two years after my elder sister another sister of mine stepped into the medical school. Her class was of 400 and number of girls was about 325. My mother who graduated around 30 years back tells us about her medical college days when male students outnumbered the female students.
The thought that comes to my mind is that Why there is a decline in the number of male students in the medical schools? and the answer that i get from most of the people is that it is simple guys are not that studious,they dont work hard and girls on the other hand work hard and score more marks that gets them admission into the top universities.
But people dont realise that girls who are admitted to the best universities after their graduation often dont work as in the case of pakistan and specially in the profession of medicine people say that things have changed nowadays women work in all fields. But I dont agree to that if one observe that majorityof the women dont work after their graduation they are normally married soon after their graduation and some parents dont wait that long as in the case of medicine more than half of the doctors dont work at all.
Nowadays some women who are career oriented specialise and work and some work after their marriage but most dont work at all. Oh I forgot to mention the women from the “elite” class who work for fun or one can say that they want to make a point to the world that by working they have achieved something in their lives these woman who spend their whole salary on themsleves and are busy in making social contacts are not needed at all by the society.
It is high time that the government should realise and should implement a quota for the females or if it is a descriminatory action then it should have a bond that a student after his or her graduation will serve for some time.
Sadly in a country like pakistan where we have limited number of medical collegs and universities in the public and private sector(by the way out of these some medical colleges are for women only). A government run medical college charges a nominal fee as compared to the cost it sustains in producing a doctor. We need working women to come forward and contribute towards the society if they cant contribute effectively let men work instead.
If a woman can work relentlessly day in and day out in farms and feilds of a feudal/tribal landlord where they actually should not work at all because of the inhumane conditions and her personal safety. Why not the rich and the middle class women work with more dedication and a will to contribute in making a prosperous society which will eventually help them and their families.

syedpk- You didn't mention statistics of engineering universities. There's a good female presence in IT institutes but there's virtually no female presence in many departments of Engineering Universities. That's one of the reason we see so many women in med. school. They don't want 'field jobs'. Nevertheless, I agree with you that they should not waste their education.

Guys i think i wanted somekind of a positive response which no one gave except truckdriver.It is almost the case allover girls studying and not working but imagine more than half of the medical graduates not working at all.It is difficult to find a doc in a village but what will happen when there wont be anyone to check a patient in the cities as well.
So i think i have used a second paragraph it that fine with you teendabbywalaand it took less than aday to reply Stu.Guys give me break stop taunts and sarcasm have something positive to say cheers.

It's not always the females fault, sometimes their families don't like it. They have to get used to the idea of their females working. And sometimes some families never get used to it. So it's not always the females not doing anything with their education.

Syedpk, Welcome to the board and don't mind these people....ignorant you know can't read between the lines. Anyway, this is not just in Pakistan I think entire world is going through the problem of 'working women'. In US, the women who get married have to decide too whether to be a stay at home mom or not so its more of a global issue concerning men. I think men need to change and give women some room to breath and prosper in their own way. Most of the men don't like that because if women start making money more than men...then women won't need men.
The government can introduce quota system etc...but the best way to tackel this problem or issue is by introducing women in governmental jobs and ask them what would be better because men can't solve women issues.

in a third world country like pakistan, where usually a male is responsible for feeding 100 mouths in the family, i think girls should only enter into such colleges only if they are willing to work and give back to the society. if they know they are just going to sit at home and not do anything, then they shud not even go there and take the seat for a person who plans to work n support family.
its so sad to see these females just sitting at home after all the professional education they have got n spent so much money on.
