Are women more future-oriented? Why?

I have come across many men (more than women) who are very easy-going about the future. They take the present as it is without worrying about the future. They believe that they will deal with whatever problems arise in the future and that they don’t need to worry about it right now.

I was wondering why I notice a split in that way of thinking.

I have also been told by some older men that women tend to be the planners.

Now, why do you think that is? (I know this doesn’t and can’t be applied to everyone)

A couple of reasons that I have heard:

a) Men tend to be a bit immature than women of the same age. A woman looks out into the future and tries to preserve it, but men are a little immature to care and are more focused on the present.

b) Women are socially weak, due to the way society works, not their inherent strength. They rely on other people more than men do. And that is why they feel the need to control future situations more than men. And that men believe that they can handle any situations that come their way, so they don’t worry about it, or at least believe that they will survive.

Re: Are women more future-oriented? Why?

C) Women tend to think more compare to men . So its fair if they think about future instead of Saas baho phaday .

D) Both are from different planets so they HAVE to think differently .

Re: Are women more future-oriented? Why?

It depends on each individual but yeah I have noticed the same too.

This could be a factor too.

Re: Are women more future-oriented? Why?

I do not think one can generalize if men or women are better at future planning.

Re: Are women more future-oriented? Why?

We are smarter.

Re: Are women more future-oriented? Why?

^ Right.

Re: Are women more future-oriented? Why?

Glad you agree.

Glad that you are glad!

Please elaborate.

I read an article not too long ago that mentioned that women use both parts of their brain (right and left) when dealing with issues/problems/conflicts whereas men use only one part of of the brain. Both hemispheres (right and left) deal with different form of reasoning; logical/analytical and emotional.

^This could be one reason why women are more inclined to study various angles of an issue....which could also include considering the future.

There's greater pressure on the women to be married/settled by a certain age in various cultures.....especially desi culture. And this expectation/pressure has the potential to build fear about the future.

Women have a reproduction clock.....(commonly known as a biological clock). There's an increased risk for a variety of medical problems regarding pregnancy and birth and babies...the older women get. That's another factor that would encourage them to be MORE concerned about the future. Such as contemplating by when they would like to have children.

Many women stay home to raise their children, so they're more involved with the various facets of their children's lives.....such as their psychological/emotional/physical development....and how they would affect their children's future. When you nurture something....you take into account it's future well-being. I've noticed that even women who work....are more involved in their children's development.

Cultural expectations play a role. For example, desi culture places pressure on girls to be mindful of their body language, their reputations....as any misstep or thoughtlessness on their part could hinder future rishta prospects. So this pressure to mind one's current behavior....is directly tied to the future.

It's more complicated than simply saying .........."Women are more this....and men are more that." Many factors, biological and otherwise play a role.

Please quote the study or article.

Useless to do so if you're stupid. If you're smart, you wouldn't ask this question.

There was this really nice article on the issue from AOL news channels. It was well organized and explained and I can’t seem to find it. Here are a few relevant links that I have found. It may or may not make a difference that some of the articles are written by women.

Now, I’m not saying that the information on these websites supports the view that women think more about the future. I’m only hypothesizing that since women analyze their emotions more in issues…this analysis may also include greater consideration for the future.

Moreover, I didn’t say that differences in the makeup and usage of the brain is the sole reason for differences between men and women. I also mentioned other biological reasons as well cultural/societal impacts. Women (not all) in general have a more holistic approach to thinking and communicating (so this COULD POSSIBLY account for thinking about the future as well)…whereas for men, their thinking tends to be restricted to the task at hand.

My existence challenges that hypothesis

:snooty:

Women are more concerned with aging. We want to finish school, get married, have kids, get whatever career position, etc. at certain ages. I believe this is the reason why we tend to be the planners. I used to think like that too, but not so much anymore.

Re: Are women more future-oriented? Why?

i think no most of them not!

Re: Are women more future-oriented? Why?

Goodnews, this is the first post I have seen where you wrote English :hehe:

Thanks for clarifying.

I know the articles and know how they do it. (mostly nuclear brain scan and blood flow study or anatomic/physical differences )

The results could be variable and some results were actually refuted by other researches.

To make the long story short:

These differences cannot prove women are either smarter  or they have better abilities for future planning.

Some ways women are better and other ways men are. This is the take home message.
For future planning, both are needed.

BUT!
Women brain is smaller…and women talk more…

And what is “smaller” supposed to imply? Smaller doesn’t necessarily mean less efficient. And I’ve met reserved women (I’m considered to be quiet and reserved by many) and very talkative men. It varies…so does the content of the conversations.

Interestingly though…here’s what I found on another website (http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/wome.html):

“By examining 20 brains (11 female, 9 male) from the “bank,” Witleson and her group found that women were able to pack approximately 18% more nerve cells into areas of the prefrontal lobes; the prefrontal lobes help regulate higher functions such as language, judgment, and planning future actions.”

"Perhaps the greater cell density in women’s prefrontal lobes compensates for the smaller brain size. Despite these differences, men and women perform equally at most tasks. So even though men may have bigger brains and women have more cells in some critical areas, neither can point to these facts as a measure of greater intelligence. Judging who is smarter is much more complex than finding out who has the largest brain. "

*****Once again…there will always be variables questioning the validity of an experiment. For example, the number of men and women in this study was not equal.

There there…I got you going now…

OK. The link you posted does not work but I think I have come across it somewhere before. It said women brain cells lose faster too.

I know very talkative men but that is a rarity.

What the speech center difference is that with damage to speech center, women are still better in keeping their ability to speak and men develop more speech problems like tourette syndrome.

There are more nerve cells overall in male brain and it weighs more too.

Men are more in to geometry, spatial resolution, mathematics and reasoning. And contrary to popular jokes, man are better at directions and map reading.

Women are more in to emotional expression and talking (without thinking :D)

Their frontal lobe has more cells, but future planning takes in account everything. And hence the conclusion which you referred to is flawed.

If men can do better mathematics and reasoning, then why would they be any less in future planning. They have less emotions and fear so here women may do better job in planning the future problems.

Everything what is said is still invalid since it takes upbringing of an individual which will overcome so called differences in brains. With training, brain connections do grow or wake up if dormant.

Thanks for pointing out small number of brains this so called research was based on.
