I was in Pakistan when she got killed. Our maasis were the ones who told me the news. They were gleeful, and happy, giving me mubarak baath that she was killed. I looked at them with my mouth hanging open. I was like…You realize this is totally against our religion, right?

They replied telling me this is what happens to girls here who are lewd. I was like, again, do you realize this is against our religion. Maasi who apparently thinks she has a phd in religion tells me that this is actually in the Quran. I was like nope, there is a clear verse on what we should do when faced with a lewd woman, and the verse is addressed to her personal relatives (not to the state or the public) and that they should keep her in their home and talk to her about her behavior. And then there are verses that further state that if a person doesn’t want to change then you let them be on their way and you be on your way.

Simple.

Then they reluctantly agreed that the approach to such women is not to kill them, because one can always reason with another person. But even then the idea of letting a person go if they don’t want to listen, was not acceptable to them.

So that gives you an idea of what the masses think - and the masses currently account for > 70% of the population.

Those of us who log onto GS represent < 10% of the population of Pakistan which is educated and MAYBE has their head screwed on right.

The topic came up among some of my other relatives and most denounced the killing, but there were a few, EDUCATED people, people who I’ve always respected as being the more level headed folks in our family, who stated that it was CORRECT that she got killed and this is what should happen to these girls. That they need to be killed.

I was horrified.

Absolutely horrified.

This doesn’t shock me, but at the same time does shock me. Like what is wrong with our culture where people condone eradicating a human life?
