I don’t see self deprecating tone in these comments. How can you call her prostitutesque? Is there proof she did anything like that apart from being misguided and attention seeking. She has got enough hate messages on her fb. Some people are even reluctant to condemn her death. Honour killing is not just a Pakistani thing. It happens in India and Bangladesh also. Why was someone bound to kill her? No one has killed Meera, Mathira, Mawra Hocane, Humaima Malik and Veena. JUst because she was of lower class. She had reached out to authorities and this death could have been preventable. Her father is supporting her against the brother’s crime. If she was so beghairat why would her father support her.
She exposed double standards prevalent in south asia when it came to authority figures like the maulvi saab.
SHe spoke out against hate and double standards in comments people wrote to her.
Like Sharmeen clearly says in this video people get away with it because current law doesn’t allow for punishment. The victim’s family can forgive the perpetrator so that is why the new law against honour killing which is being stalled must pass. Today Qandeel tomorrow it could be someone else. Like yesterday it was Ambreen and others. It’s not about image of any south asian country it’s about improving quality of life of people living in the country.
It is not Qandeel who is responsible but people with mindsets like Haroon Rashid who on TV can say her death is justified. There is nothing wrong with isolating such views and saying they are not representative because living in a global world this would become news anyway. It’s like India trying to censor the documentary about the Delhi rape victim where rapists/and sympathisers justified their actions. It’s going to be known internationally anyway why not condemn it.
I have many friends living in Pakistan who are troubled by these comments that they can’t sleep. Life should never become so cheap that we assume someone will be killed anyway.
