with toothpaste ofcourse
I wouldn't as I can never be sure that I didn't gulp down part of it. Other's claim that they have such self control!
The best is to brush your teeth after Sahoor & then avoid sleeping (that people usually do for an hour or two before going to work).
There is a Hadiths from Sahih Bukhari that states:
Volume 9, Book 93, Number 629:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said that your Lord said, "Every (sinful) deed can be expiated; and the fast is for Me, so I will give the reward for it; and the smell which comes out of the mouth of a fasting person, is better in Allah's Sight than the smell of musk." (See Hadith No. 584)
The smell talked about here is not due to hygiene problem but because of keeping the mouth closed & not speaking other than when necessary during Roza. As the person observing the fast should spend most of his time remembering Allah, rather than getting involved in vain discussions.
thanks ahmedjee..i just brush my teeth after sehri and then nothing goes in my mouth until iftaar..but i have seen ppl brushing their teeth in the morning while they are fasting
if everything depends on the niyyah do we think anyone brushes their teeth to 'enjoy' the 'taste' of toothpaste?
I tend to brush mine after sehri ![]()
Excellent question, I was wondering the same thing. I mean, I can't stand waking up after opening my fast and not being able to brush my teeth with toothpaste. It's not like it's considered food, or as someone stated above that we enjoy the taste of it. It doesn't satisfy hunger in any way whatsoever, so why is it that we're not allowed to use toothpaste?
you see..taste is taste..doesnt matter if we enjoy it or not. We have to follow Islam like Allah wants us to follow. We can't just start doing things what we feel is right
Hum Allah k banday hain aur hummain Allah ki hi bandagi kerni hai!
I think i need to ask a scholer about this
I agree.. and since Allah didn’t say anything about it, I guess we can pay more attention to our dental hygine.
I thought you said we should follow Islam like ALLAH wants us.. ![]()
PA if i have a fever I would not go see a lawyer for that..if my car needs an oil change i will not go consult a dentist..so you see these scholers devote their lives for islam..and i would go consult them..not just any scholer but someone whom i think is pious and knowledgeable
brushing your teeth is a problem as their is a taste left in the mouth. if you do not swallow it with the spit then i guess its ok. but i think its not recommended to brush teeth after fast has begun, you should do it before.
well Sheraz the point was that if i've been given detailed and easy to understand study materials i shouldn't go seek 'opinions' of other students (however better than me) but rather use my own head to study and pass the exam.
PA. What about those who read Darsi Model Test Papers and still fail? What’s wrong with having a Tutor on the side? Brother, some people are very nalaik.
Personally, I don’t think God is worried about people brushing their teeth, before after or during a fast. I would think that listerine is probably a no no, as it contains alcohol.
What about Suka (Dry) Brushing without tooth paste? Or Maswak?
what if the toothpaste has no flavour? then what? I mean one one side we say safai nisf eeman hai, on the other we say oh you cant brush your teeth for the sake of roza, well the same rule could apply to kulli during wadoo because like it or not if you ahve a dry mouth and you are doing kulli, some water will get absorbed.
and as much as we can sayu that one should just stay up after sehri and all, its not possible or practical in everyone's case.
Assalamo Alaikum,
Does cleaning one’s teeth contradict the Hadith praising the bad breath of a fasting Muslim?
well, i brush my teeth before i eat something in the morning. why do people brush after they are fasting
i understand that you should brush after you eat but for this month, i guess you can just wash your mouth and not brush. brush only BEFORE you eat for sehri.
Sadiyah,
Thanks for the link. It mentioned a Hadiths from the Bukhari
Volume 3, Book 31, Number 154:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, "If somebody eats or drinks forgetfully then he should complete his fast, for what he has eaten or drunk, has been given to him by Allah." Narrated 'Amir bin Rabi'a, "I saw the Prophet cleaning his teeth with Siwak while he was fasting so many times as I can't count." And narrated Abu Huraira, "The Prophet said, 'But for my fear that it would be hard for my followers, I would have ordered them to clean their teeth with Siwak on every performance of ablution." The same is narrated by Jabir and Zaid bin Khalid from the Prophet who did not differentiate between a fasting and a nonfasting person in this respect (using Siwak).
Aisha said, "The Prophet said, "It (i.e. Siwak) is a purification for the mouth and it is a way of seeking Allah's pleasures." Ata' and Qatada said, "There is no harm in swallowing the resultant saliva."
And miswak does have a taste.
The person answering the question in the link you posted said that he takes the hadiths I posted in the first reply more authentic than the one above. To which I disagree as they are both from Bukhari Sharief & narrated by Abu Huraira (ra). And as I tried to explain before, the smell from the mouth is not necessarily from avoiding the miswak/tooth brush.
I am messy while brushing my teeth, water is all over the place. As my heart doesn't feel comfortable, I don't brush during Roza. Others are more than welcome to differ.
These are minor issues which are best left to one's own decision. :)
I’m curious about this too,
there’s the thought of going into college without brushed teeth
(and we all know what that means)
thanks to those who have posted helpfull info :k:
Its surely better to brush before commencing the fast in the morning, that way if there is an element of doubt you avoid it.
I believe its permitted to either use miswaak/toothpaste whichever, but it is not preferred to do so while you're fasting, its better to do it after sehree. If you're sure that the taste of the toothpaste will not get mixed up with saliva and then get swallowed down your throat, its ok to brush your teeth, else miswak is preferred. & Allah knows best.
Ahmadjee posted a hadith that might help your query SherazCT
