now this issue has been around for a long time now. I keep hearing people blaming vaccines for the rising cases of autism. however, cdc has denied and that there is no link between the two. how many of you feel comfortable in giving all the recommended vaccines to your children? is there any vaccines that you would not give or wait till they are older?
i am not a parent yet but planning on conceiving soon and it just scares me, all the controversy there is. did anyone experience negative effects of vaccination in their children or children they know? i cant imagine how vaccines can really cause something so severe when ithey have been around for a long time but there is just soo much on the internet that it’s mind boggling.
are vaccines safe?
Yes, vaccines are safe. All 3 of my children have received full vaccinations on schedule and no, I was never worried or scared about autism risks in doing so.
Re: are vaccines safe?
I would fully vaccinate. Where I am not all vaccines are covered by childhood immunisation as the population is low risk but as we will
be travelling to Pak at least once a year so I am having baby vaccinated to those as well. Once you see the suffering of people who have diseases like polio and hep b which are completely preventable it’s a no brainer for me.
Re: are vaccines safe?
Yes.
It is really dangerous for your child and the surrounding population if you refuse to vaccinate.
Re: are vaccines safe?
yes, they are extremely safe! the immense benefits far outweigh the negligible risks associated with those vaccines. every child must be up-to-date with all mandatory vaccinations.
In Canada and other western countries, kids will NOT be able to attend school if they are NOT up-to-date with their vaccination schedules.
Re: are vaccines safe?
Actually, KKF, that is not true. There are waivers parents can use. There’s a growing “anti-vaccination” movement.
Re: are vaccines safe?
Correct. When I worked at the school, we had a handful of parents who were anti vaccinations and waivers from the dept of health exempting them. Most claimed religious reasons for the exemption.
Re: are vaccines safe?
Not all vaccinations are helpful though. I agree most are completely safe and should not be avoided. I will never go out and get vaccinated for flu because I strongly feel such vaccinations make our immune system weaker and more susceptible to other viruses.
Re: are vaccines safe?
Better safe than sorry. I would vaccinate.
Re: are vaccines safe?
Honey! you have no idea what mind boggling is!! You gotta become a parent first :k:
Other than mild fever for my little brother; have never seen/heard anyone with bigger side affects.
I have vaccinated all three of my children, including the annual flu-shot.
Re: are vaccines safe?
Theorist- any reason for you to “strongly feel” this?
I’d like for you to support any such claims because unfortunately people take these internet advice as expert advice and we end up harming our children. According to CDC report, there are 4 pediatric deaths related to influenza just last week (March 2-9, 2014) and many more in the previous weeks. Our mortality from influenza is higher than epidemic levels for last year and this year- how much of that is contributing from the fact that people show up to their PMDs and pediatrician telling them “I got the vaccine last year and still got sick” “It doesn’t do ANYthing” “It makes me susceptible to more viruses/diseases/whatever”- You tell us please!!
Vaccines are MANDATORY unless you have a religious reason to hold off on them- there’s a reason for this. I can go on for hours about the importance but please don’t put your “medical feelings” out there without evidence.

Re: are vaccines safe?
i would think flu vaccine is pretty safe since they use dead viruses in that. the vaccines that can be little risky ( even that is a very very rare chance) are the live attenuated vaccines because if someone is immucompromised, it can possibly cause some problems.
Re: are vaccines safe?
see thats what worries me. why is there such a resistance against vaccines which have proven to save millions of lives. i know before vaccines, infant mortality rate was much higher.
why are some parents convinced that autism/ASD/behavioral problems can be caused by a vaccine? there seems to be no evidence according to the CDC.
Re: are vaccines safe?
^ because it’s kind of cool not to vaccinate.. Yep I call this a trend which will soon go away but will put several kids at risk forever.
I have yet to come across a good article stating medical facts why vaccine isn’t safe unless there are medical reasons ( allergies etc) but for now it is what it is!!
Herd immunity is almost gone ![]()
Re: are vaccines safe?
there has been controversies that many vaccines contained thiomersal which is a form of mercury. mercury is a known toxin, however the form of mercury used in thiomersal was harmless as per CDC. and even that has been removed from most vaccines, but rate of autism has increased to 1 in 88. but people are still refusing to vaccinate, there was a recent mumps and measles outbreak in NY/NJ area. i am assuming people here are more against vaccines and the rate of autism is also higher on the east coast according to some sources. not sure how accurate that is.
Re: are vaccines safe?
Like I said not all vaccinations are helpful. I would rather not get vaccinated every year for little things like flu. I simply do not think it is needed in perfectly healthy individuals. Of course, if you are an elderly or not a very healthy child/adolescent then you should get vaccinated. Just use common sense. I am not anti-vaccinations but I do think we over-medicate ourselves for every little thing.
There is no evidence now - but a few years back a very authentic-seeming research came out by a doctor who changed the results to support his theory (vaccine —> autism). The research was found to be fraudulent and all the statements by the doctor had to be retracted. However, it’s repercussions are still present in that the myth is further perpetuated by people and their anecdotes. Mostly ignorant people, its unfortunate but yeah…there have been breakouts of measles etc bcos people are refusing to vaccinate. Like Gemini stated herd immunity is now almost gone completely bcos people refuse to vaccinate their kids. They put everyone else at risk.
Re: are vaccines safe?
my daughter has got all the vaccinations required and no the only thing in my mind for vaccines are that they keep our kids safe from dangerous diseases and I would never ever take the risk of keeping her from getting vaccinated. It’s not fair to a child in my opinion.
Mine are vaccinated and AH they are fine. I personally haven’t seen vaccinations gone wrong but I won’t lie and say it doesn’t scare me when I venture onto the non vaccination arguments and the amount of damage it has caused. Some claim their child changed over night or got sick and that is scary. I do however break them down. I will have half done one day and schedule an app for next week with the nurse and take them in. MAY ALL our kids stay safe and healthy. Ameen.
Re: are vaccines safe?
^That’s what scares me too. I have had horrible reaction to antibiotics. I almost died taking two tablets of Bactrim. Giving a flu vaccination to a perfectly healthy person just seems abnormal to me. I know the odds of something happening are in thousands or even millions but still… It seems kind of pointless. I have no issues with really important vaccinations like for chicken pox/polio/pneumonia and whatever else is extremely dangerous.
