Are girlfriends saheliyan?

Is the word saheli used for a guy’s non-platonic girlfriend as well as for platonic female friend? Or is just the English word girlfriend used?

Re: Are girlfriends saheliyan?

I have never heard a guy using saheli f for his female friend, it is used by girls for their female friends.

Re: Are girlfriends saheliyan?

^ Agree. I've never heard a guy refer to his female friend as a "saheli". I've heard guys refer to female friends as dost, colleague, classmate, or girlfriend.

"Saheli" is a term commonly and typically used by girls for their female friends. Once a saheli stabs you in the back/betrays you, she becomes a *"paheli" *(confusing riddle).....that's when she stops becoming a saheli. LOL!

**"paheli" -- I love it!

**Okay, so saheliyan are onlyfemale friends of females. So is there a term in Urdu for a guy's girlfriend? (I know, the concept is so untraditional.)

Re: Are girlfriends saheliyan?

^^ the only term I can think of is dost.

Actually, even desis living in Pak will incorporate English words in their urdu conversations. So, they would use the word girlfriend...among their peer group anyways. Since desi culture is conservative....more conservative choice of words would be used when discussing the matter with an adult.

For example, if you watch many Pakistani dramas in which a guy tells his mom about a girl he's interested in marrying. He will use the words, dost, classfellow, or colleage to describe her. He wouldn't say girlfriend. And from then on...he will proceed to tell his mom that he has gotten to know her, she's a nice girl, and he's interested in marrying her....bla bla bla.

Re: Are girlfriends saheliyan?

^True. But you can hardly expect the guy to say to his mom, "ammi, meri mehbooba se miliye..."etc. Because mehbooba has such an air of disapproval hanging about it

And let's face it, not all girlfriends are mehboobahs (mehboobiyan?)

Here are some examples of urdu words that mean girlfriend (mehbooba, aashiqa, sanam). But all of these are too poetic....and too filmi....and really are not used in daily coloquial urdu conversations. You can call her your "heroine"......as they do in the Indian movies. LOOOOOOL, I crack me up! No, seriously dude, don't do that!

Why are you so interested in this question? Is it simply out of curiosity or do you actually have a "saheli" whose more than just a saheli?

No -- I just love language and words. And anyway...I'm a woman!

Redvelvet, the correct word would be 'maashooqa' not aashiqa:)

yes.. the correct word is mashooqa for a female friend of a guy... but that sounds a little bit objectionable cuz of the nature of exact meanings of this word...
cuz that female friend can be just a friend within certain limitations...

btw i have another word but that would get me banned here :D

Thanks....I thought they were two separate things, lol.

girlfriend = Missyaar..........................:)

Re: Are girlfriends saheliyan?

^lol. But miss is an English word too. I would say, you aren’t supposed to have girlfriends in our culture, hence they haven’t coined any word for it :omg:

Right -- foreign concept, foreign word used.

A female friend of girl is saheli which is commonly used but what word used in english for saheli ??????

Girlfriend is the correct English for saheli. Or just friend works.
