The word girlfriend has both meanings. Both a female friend of a female, and as the non-platonic female friend of a guy. Only in these "metro-sexual" times now it also have the third meaning of a non-platonic female friend of a female...
But at any rate, a female can use the word girlfriend to mean exactly saheli.
