Arabic influence on local langauges of Pakistan

Re: Arabic influence on local langauges of Pakistan

I don’t read the comments on Youtube anymore, especially for Afghan music, for that reason. It always seems to turn political and it ALWAYS becomes quite nasty. All I can say about that is that some people have serious issues and should seek therapy.

Re: Arabic influence on local langauges of Pakistan

My mum used to be a university professor back home (prior to immigrating) and has always had an interest in languages. She's always had an interest in it (and several other languages). I've also learned from friend (I have friend that I'm especially close to and his grandmother has been helping me with that).

Re: Arabic influence on local langauges of Pakistan

mahool bhai, are you sindhi? one'd think sindhi would have a lot more arabic vocab than the rest of the subcontinent's languages given its history. is that true?

Re: Arabic influence on local langauges of Pakistan

^ Only as much as urdu, not a whole lot more. Sindhi shares mounds and mounds of vocab with punjabi.

Re: Arabic influence on local langauges of Pakistan

i’ll wait for mahool or muqqawee to chime in, not taking an ABCD’s word on such matters. :snooty:

Re: Arabic influence on local langauges of Pakistan

That is a logical thinking considering the area was first conquered by Arabs. But this logic is not proved from the literature and the language. Sanskrit words forms majority of Sindhi vocabulary used in texts and literature. I was vetting a book on 'Language used in Shah Latif's poetry' and there were just 10% Arabic words and that too parts of verses of Quran in most cases. Otherwise, its all pure Sindhi words including sanskrit words to great extent. But the problem with Shah's poetry is he intentionally rebelled against the norm of writing in Persian and Arabic (which was with other poets of the era) and the reason why he is loved in Sindh is he used the langauge which was spoken by masses and not court language.
