Re: Apps for two year old

you wanna put your 2 year old in front of a tablet?

Re: Apps for two year old

Muzna, we spend two hours a day doing some educational stuff on the tab .. he is way over active MA and really hard to manage .. despite taking him out to nursery every day , he still has energy left and I dont know what else to do , coz I run out of energy at times !

Re: Apps for two year old

Educational or not, it is a lot of time for a two year old to be spending on an electronic device on a daily basis IMO. It may be why he's not burning off energy either, he's probably being stimulated more by the screen time.

Anyway, to answer your question - the Hopster app is good as you can download programmes to watch offline. Very useful when travelling.

Apps for two year old

Tabs are great but try to keep him away from tv and tabs as much as possible. Easier said than done but all this stimulation is making kids more hyper and overstimulated. It's hard Bc all adults are on their phones and tablets all day. Kids imitate adults.

Re: Apps for two year old

I dont understand , what is the harm in using technology for educational purposes?

Re: Apps for two year old

i think the issue is a two year old doesn't need education, this is the age they are meant to explore their world with all their senses and little bodies. any screen time is going to be primarily for the parents' benefit, and that is not so bad. 2 hours might be okay, or not. depends on when and how. 2 hours of non stop screens just before bedtime most likely is trouble, but 2 hours of 20 min intervals spread here and there should be perfectly fine.

that said, i have only purchased a kid once, maybe they are all different.

Re: Apps for two year old

anyways to all poster not answering the question. Abcmouse.com has a free app of alphabet songs, my toddler loved it. I also have have the whole CD by Yusuf Islam songs. I haven't really found any islamic app that gets and hold his attention attention. But i do have the Azan app.

Re: Apps for two year old

I was going to say abcmouse.com
I have used it with my 4 year old and it's been really helpful in getting her to recognize her letters and numbers. 2 year old might be too young though.

Re: Apps for two year old

farm123 ... counting game with farm animals.
writing wizard ... kids trace letters with fingers
memory game (thats not the actual name) its one of those colred square that you touch ... they turn over to reveal pictures of fruits nd turn back to color when you touch another square .... you have to essentially remember which square housed what pic ... match two alike and it poofs away ... at end of game you get a flying sticker that you have to catch. lol .... i think its great for improvig shrt term memory. i'll need to look at the app and will come back to update with name.

as to the other concerns re tablet time .... i agree with queer that not all screen time is created equal ... a game/app shooting guns is not the same as one where you trace a letter/word. most child development articles i have read ... suggest 2 hrs of TV/tablet/phone time combined/day is ok. as with everything ... balance is key.

Re: Apps for two year old

Thanks guys really helpful apps mentioned above .. I will look into these .

So far he really enjoys the tracing ones and can write ABCD and 1, 3 and 5 ! Its random, but MA he is picking things up fast.

Re: Apps for two year old

Regarding Islamic apps for kids under 4 years of age , anyone has any recommendations please? I am willing to pay as much as I have to to get a few apps .. I am finding it a bit difficult to get him into the concept of it all. So far we are doing repetitive stuff like names of Allah and Prophet, Quranic surah's .. but I think I should start with basics to Arabic Quranic language too ..

Re: Apps for two year old

@Chicken_Biryani , they are Muslims Kids Dua and Zain al Islam that my kids loved

Re: Apps for two year old

My two year old can recognise and call out some shapes, match shapes, count a little bit, recite alphabets etc, due to the time he's spent on my tablet. He's picked up on these mostly from educational apps, and nerdy cartoons like ummyzoomi/ Dora. He hardly watches an TV, in fact days can go by where's he's got no TV time.

Re: Apps for two year old

I think I'm the odd one out and sometimes people tell me that the reason is that a decade ago things were different and there weren't as many tablets out there let alone educational apps for kids but I'm not so sure. I made a conscious effort to keep my child off TV, phones and PCs. I don't regret it and she has not suffered for it.

These days I don't know of a child that doesn't reach for an electronic device when it is within sight. Why is that? Because they have been provided access to it. Case in point....my 4 year old nephew. He simply cannot think of playing without a gaming console, tablet or other hand held device. If he is refused access to any of these then he wants the TV on with his choice of program or movie from NetFlix. He will not draw or colour or play with any toys, not even cars/trucks etc. It pains me to see how my sister and BIL have allowed it to get this far.

My kid still plays with dolls, draws pictures and uses colouring pencils. She knits and crochets and has learned to sew both by hand and by machine. She paints on canvas and loves to craft as well.
All of this is time spent away from any sort of screen. I know that she will spend a lifetime in front of a screen either at rest/play or for work. She really does not need it in her childhood.

Re: Apps for two year old

I understand that you must be exhausted.
Can you explain to me how putting him in front of a screen is going to consume his energy?
Have you considered putting him in a swimming program where you can sit by and let someone else do the work? As well as teaching him a critical skill, this will give you some time to sit by the pool and relax.

Would you believe that I used a whiteboard to teach Noor when she was young? We did the same exercises that are found on the net but on a whiteboard with dry erase markers.

Re: Apps for two year old

Muzna, you are definitely not the odd one out , coz I feel the same way. Believe me, if I had not seen the competitive edge of the modern times , I wouldnt have bothered my kid to the screen. As a family we dont watch TV much and try to stick to just an hour a day. All morning and afternoon and evening , I keep engaged in other activities that are more physical and mental exercise as compared to screen time.

I do blocks, puzzles, drawing , coloring, book reading, even paper art and black board games, magic board drawing games etc with him. Last week I got him a baby tool set so he could get his own little tools coz he likes to copy his dad .

Despite pathetic weather limitations I manage to take him for swimming thrice a week and nursery almost four days a week. We go to the toddler snooker game or physical play area every once in two weeks.

At home, I have given him a million balloons and a few balls that he can play with different games with.

That keeps him tied up through the day and obviously I am playing with him majority of the time or getting him to remain interested in independent play.

Problem is kids with him in the nursery are learning things through exposure to screen and they get introduced to concepts quicker. I had to beat that, so now we do one hour Quran and Islamic reading online coz that is easier to manage + one hour or so on various educational apps ..

I saw the difference in his learning within weeks. MA he has picked up so fast. I have come to a conclusion that screen time alone can cause issues as kids grow, but if its done in proportion and with clear objectives in mind, it is beneficial for the child. his nursery staff think he's a bright head MA and he no longer lags in concepts that his peers picked up.

I guess we have entered a very different era. we cant stay away from it or beat it, so much rather take it on , head on , but use it to our benefit rather then letting it take over our lives. example of this is : I showed him a few ten-pin games online and then we played some on wii .. now I take him to the kids games in the toddler groups and he loves the ten-pin so much that he lost interest in playing on the wii !! but it was so easy to get him hooked to a physical game .

he had no concept of number puzzles , so played some games on the apps . Previously I tried recreating them on paper and he was least bothered and I would get so huffed up trying to get the message through. But since the apps but , its become easier to commmunicate coz he does it a few times online and immediately gets the hang of it and then tries it out in real and finds the real one more challenging and gets going his merry way !

Re: Apps for two year old

cant believe I wrote such a huge post :hinna: sorry !
