After all the hype and rumors, Apple enters the wearables market.
The company unveiled its long-rumored smartwatch – The Apple Watch – during a press event Tuesday in Cupertino, California. Meanwhile, it also confirmed the arrival of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Follow along for the latest updates:
2:35 p.m.: Cook now discussing the health benefits of the Apple Watch. The Fitness app monitors all activity and movement, while the Workout app lets users set specific goals for exercises like cycling and running.
2:32 p.m.: Third-party apps will work on the Watch as well. For example, a Starwood Hotels app lets users use their Watch as a room key, while Twitter users can view their timelines or send tweets from your wrist. BMW, Pinterest, Honeywell, Nike and Major League Baseball all working on watch apps.
2:28 p.m.: For maps, the Apple Watch gives vibrating feedback that tells you when to make the turn when using walking directions. Very cool. Users can also access contacts, making phone calls or sending special visual messages drawn on screen and sent to a friend’s watch.
2:26 p.m.: It seems Siri is incorporated into the Watch as well. A demo shows how to search for movies playing nearby. After asking Siri about what movies to watch, she will recommend films and locations. Users can also access photos from the watch.
2:21 p.m.: Users can view the weather, map directions, music from the iPhone and others. Notifications quickly pop up, featuring buttons connected to the item. For example, on Messages, users have a quick reply option on the watch for faster responses. It also boasts animated emojis.
2:16 p.m.: The Apple Watch does indeed include touch functionality, on top of using the digital crown to navigate. Users can customize their watch face, or even tweak features of the face itself.
2:14 p.m.: The Watch will be available in two sizes and six band types. Overall, the Watch doesn’t appear as bulky as its rivals.
2:11 p.m.: The Watch boasts an accelerometer, gyroscopes and sensors to check your pulse for fitness apps. It also leverage GPS and Wi-Fi from the user’s phone.
2:08 p.m.: It’s hard to say whether the Watch has a touchscreen or not. It appears most of the functionality moves through the digital crown. It has voice-enabled features, too, and fitness and health sensors. The Watch users a sapphire retina display.
2:04 p.m.: “Apple Watch is the most personal device we’ve ever created,” says Cook. He says the device includes a digital crown that translates analog movements into digital commands. It scrolls lists, zooms in and out and navigates to the home screen.
1:59 p.m.: And we have the Apple smartwatch. The band comes in several band colors, such as pink, blue and white. It’s called Apple Watch. Tim Cook is wearing one with a white band on stage.
1:57 p.m.: Apple Pay will launch in October. It’s available only on the new iPhones.
And Tim Cook drops “one more thing” to thunderous applause. Smartwatch time?
1:55 p.m.: Apple Pay will also be enabled with apps such as Target, Groupon and Uber. Other retailers including McDonald’s, Nike, Subway and Whole Foods will support Apple Pay.
1:51 p.m.: Apple says credit card numbers will not be stored on the phone. If the phone is lost or stolen, users can suspend payments on the device without cancelling their card. Visa, Mastercard and American Express are on board, as are banks including Bank of America and Chase.
1:47 p.m.: Cook calls out credit cards for weak security. His solution: Apple Pay. “It is so cool,” says Cook. The process shows a user placing their smartphone to a sensor, and a quick beep confirms the processed transaction. It will be built into every iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. It will leverage near-field communication and a chip called the Secure Element to store encrypted payment information. All credit cards will appear on Passbook.
1:45 p.m.: Cook shifts gears to the mobile payment business. Here comes Apple’s entry. He calls the payment process “fairly antiquated,” showing footage of people scrambling to find their credit cards to pay for items.
1:43 p.m.: Cook returns to show off new ads featuring Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon. Funny stuff.
1:38 p.m.: Schiller says the front-facing camera has improved, too. It lets in 80% more light, and also includes better face detection for selfies. Because selfie technology is critical. The iPhones will be available in gold, silver and space grey.
The iPhone 6 starts at $199 for the 16 GB model, $299 for a 64 GB model and $399 for a new 128 GB model. The iPhone 6 Plus starts at $299, going all the way to $499.
1:35 p.m.: Schiller says video capture has been advanced, adding 1080p video at 60 frames per second. Users can also capture slo-mo videos up to 240 frames per second.
1:30 p.m.: The new 8-megapixel iSight camera gets a new sensor and focus pixels, which reads the light coming in and out for fast auto-focus found on high-speed DLR cameras, Schiller says.
1:28 p.m.: Schiller says the Wi-Fi is three times faster than 5S. The iPhone 6 will also support Voice over LTE.
1:26 p.m.: Apple’s Phil Schiller says battery life is equal or better in all categories for the 6 and 6 Plus than the 5S. The 6 Plus in particular seem to dominate the 5S in everything from video to Wi-Fi browsing. For example, the 6 Plus gets 14 hours of video time compared to 10 for the 5S. For Wi-Fi browsing, its get 12 hours compared to 10 on 5S.
