My aunt's 12 year old kid is named Mohammad Osama. Recently they moved to the US and there was a bit of a concern when the kid joined a school. The principal of the school was obviously concerned but for the sake of the child himself, as he might become a victim of taunts etc. He is still called osama at home but his official first name is now just Mohammad.
I think its fair to be concerned. On one side we do have the right to argue that what another same-named person did shoudl not dictate how we treat than name. But then its also important to be logical and think about the kid too and the difficulties he/she will face growing up.

i'm sure that there is not a single muslim in this world who calls himself 'self declared islamist ' . the newspaper or the person who wrote the article is blatantly lying.
I thought that "Islamist" refers to an ideology where ppl believe that Islam should dominate the world, and all the kafirs, dhimmis should be converted or killed, blah bla....Islamic xtremisim.... just like the Hindutva ideology.
First of all jihad is already a common muslim name. Next do you not think it is about time to reclaim a positive term's positive perception?
Alas, i don't think it is possible to do that in the present. When people hear the word "Jihad", the first thing that comes to their mind is Terrorism.
This is just like the Swastika case. inspite of the fact that the swastika is a religious symbol(and a symbol of peace) in both hinduism and Buddhism, it is banned inwestern contries, purely because when people see a Swastika, they think about Nazism, not buddhism or Hinduism.

I find it very sad that the swastika is now an official sign of racism, when it has been in use by the hindu religion for centuries. Just because a racist nut decides to use that sign for himself should not make that sign itself racist.
Swastika is very much used in India but it doesn't have a black & white colour scheme adopted by Nazis.

you're absolutely right......but every year people become vitims of racism , riligious hatred etc....no matter what name they've got.

there is absolutely nothing like forcing someone to convert or kill a non muslim without a pretty good reason in islam.

It's all about trying not to offend other people.
There is a big difference in symbolism and a name. I don't think a name of someone should offend others. [if it has a good meaning]
How about allowing a Christian name his son as "Crusade" in Peshawar? may be when he grows up he can open a "Crusade Paan Shop" or "Crusade Bacon and Omelete Corner".:)
forget it. A christian in Peshawar won't even have the guts to do so knowing his surroundings better. Mr Seyem is naming his son Jihad knowing that Germans will bend over and let him do so in their self hating political correctness.
As with everytime, ignorance shows its face in this thread in the form of this thread...
The word Jihad simply means struggle...It can be struggle to study, to read, to plant a tree e.t.c. The term jihad was associated to warfare exclusively by the west...
And the correct word association would be naming someone Richard in a Muslim country for Richard the Lionheart , or Alex or Pious or Gregory e.t.c. who were the engineers of the genocide called crusades...But Christians in Muslim countries still name themselves such...
There's a wide gap between not offending and promoting ignorance; just like in the Swastika case. If people weren't so damn lazy, and actually willing to learn that in fact the symbol was co-opted by the Nazi's, the reclemation of the symbol by Hindus and whomever else would be welcomed as yet another assult on Nazi's.
Instead, people want to remain ignorant, and are inclined to think that a brown guy wearing a Swastika is somehow a nazi supporter....

Modern Islamism refers to the belief that Muslims should first and foremost be the masters of their own destiny. This whole conquer the world idiocy is a fabrication and invention of Western right-Wing commentators looking for a new enemy....
The educated can clearly see that OBL's rhetoric is just an Islamified version of exactly the same rhetoric Muslims get from the West.

In don't know if its there in islam or not. But its certainly practised by muslims. You know that's a fact. I can show you plenty of photographs.
I am not intending to offend anyone...

But how many people KNOW that "Jihad" has a good meaning? Is it possibe to tell each one of the 957 million people in the developed world that "Jihad" has a good meaning?
The first thing that comes to the mind of a westerner when he hears the name "Jihad" is Al-Qaeda, bin-Laden, etc...
said, “Whoever purposely throws himself from a mountain and kills himself, will be in the (Hell) Fire falling down into it and abiding therein perpetually forever; and whoever drinks poison and kills himself with it, he will be carrying his poison in his hand and drinking it in the (Hell) Fire wherein he will abide eternally forever; and whoever kills himself with an iron weapon, will be carrying that weapon in his hand and stabbing his abdomen with it in the (Hell) Fire wherein he will abide eternally forever.” **
Islam prevents All inhumane acts like suicide, killing innocent civillians including women, children, old people as well as the young [who don’t fight].
Also ruining structures and cutting trees or burning fields.
We can’t judge a Religion by its followers…For example some people with muslim names infact many in this day n age drink and sell Alcohol, they go to night clubs for music and dancing, they commit illegal sexual intercourse,[islam prohibits all that] similarly some people with muslim names do such acts which have nothing to do with Islam.

Very few people know the meaning of Jihad ....Even Many muslims don't know the right meaning of Jihad.
yet It is possible for muslims to tell others the meaning of Jihad not only by keeping this name for thier children but also showing them thier true Islamic character ....for example if you read only about the rights of a neighbor in Islam....They're so many.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stated in one of his Hadiths that Angel Jibreel (Gabriel) kept exhorting him to treat neighbors kindly to the extent that the Prophet imagined that a neighbor could inherit from his neighbor...
