Apartment...

In a month or so wife is going to join me :frowning:
I am looking for an apartment, never had any experience in living with another person who is going to share everything.

The plan is i will acquire the place, when she lands in NY :frowning: she will buy the home decor and furniture and other kharcha items.

Two questions:

  1. What is a good size apartment for a couple?

  2. How do you make a plan, i mean we are going to buy everything from a washroom lotta to furniture?

Re: Apartment...

1 bedroom apartment
Make a list of your "needs" in kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, family room. Get the bare necessities first and you can get them before she lands...

Re: Apartment...

What are these?

Re: Apartment...

bed, a frying pan, a cooking pot, a set of 4 dinner plates, a set of 4 glasses, some silverware, kitchen knife, cutting board, cooking utensils, a can opener (manual), a set or two of kitchen towel, dish soap, scrub for washing dishes, couple mug/cups for tea/coffee, couple bath towels, couple bed sheets, bathroom supplies---a toothpaste and tooth brush glass, soap, shampoo, shower curtain. Some cleaning supplies---broom, mop, dustpan, all purpose cleaning liquid, paper towel.

Re: Apartment…

wow… :hayaa:

I never even in my wildest dreams think of this stuff… apart from bed

Re: Apartment...

lol...well now you can dream of this stuff too. :D

Re: Apartment...

If you are renting - why cant u rent a furnished one ?

I would go for two bedrooms and make one my study / home office...

much needed - am telling you mate :)

Re: Apartment...

**Firstly , its more important where the apartment is located.....helps in day to day scheme of things , proximity to work , groceries ,transport etc etc......... a 2 bedroom to start with for sure !....

As far as planning on what to get before she arrives.......U will need to have it "operational" cause its gonna take a while for her to settle in and start buying and decorating it.

The "Plan" would be best if you just break it into "roomwise " essentials

Bedroom : Bed , Table , Chair , Dresser at the very least ( you can get cheap ones till she comes and then go looking for a proper bedroom set suitable to her tastes ) , 2 sets of bedsheets , quilt , blanket , bedroom slippers , floor lamps.

Bathroom : Slippers , toothpaste , toothbrushes , shower gel , handwashing liquid or soap shampoo , conditioner , moisturizer , toilet rolls , lotta , bath mat , shower curtain , cleaning brushes and liquid , bin.

Kitchen : Definitely need to stock up the kitchen.....Frying pan , Cooking pot , ladles , plates , mugs ,glasses , Knives , cutlery ,serving trays ,Kitchen towel , Spices , canned food , can opener , rice , spaghetti , biscuits , cereals (Basically non-perishable foods) ,cutting board , mini chopper , Cooking oil & dustbin , Dish-washing liquid , cleaning sponges and on the day she arrives stock up the fridge with fruits and fresh veggies , and get frozen foods like burgers , nuggets etc.

Lounge : A Sofa or armchairs , a coffee table and Lamps , TV ( bare minimum..)

Try to rent a furnished apartment will cut down on running around for stuff however I guess most apartments will have a microwave , refrigerator , dishwasher and washing machine and are carpeted....if not make sure you only look at ones that are !

Oh and don't forget to buy some scented roomsprays ! :D**

Re: Apartment...

Um if you can afford it, get a 2 bedroom place...

Why don't u start by telling us what YOU already have? have you two decided that ull buy everything new together? will she be bringing some stuff?

Re: Apartment...

I live in a one bd apt in NY. That's all we can afford right now. One thing that you want to be careful about is the commute to and from work here. You don't want to live too far where its going to be really hard for you to commute. One bd or two depends on your needs and if you can afford bigger apt or not. If it was upto me, I would get two bd room because living in NY, I get tons of relatives visiting and they end up sleeping in my living room if they are staying.

We started from scratch. We had nothing in our apartment when we got married. My husband even bought bed with me because he wasn't sure if I'll like what he picks. We bought it the next day though. The only thing that he had from before was a small dinning table and a small futon which broke after few months. We bought a sofa set when the older one broke. Kitchen items, don't rush to get them. Use what you have. Wash, clean them and your wife can use those for a day or two. I am extremely picky person and I surely wouldn't have liked my husband's choice in dinner set and any of the kitchen items. I bought everything after we got married. He only had two large pots, a wok, a small frying pan, some masalay and some plastic plates in the kitchen and two mugs. My kitchen now is all set by me. I picked everything and that's how I like it. We bought a tv eventually when we saved. In bathroom, he didn't have much, just a lota.. lol. Again, I bought everything I liked.

My suggestion is, use what you have first. When she lands take her shopping the next day. Pick out a bed first thing and then start buying out other things. We wanted to stay in budget so everytime we wanted to buy big things like tv, sofa, computer etc we saved for few months and then bought it. I think for anything kitchen related, Ikea is a great store. I go to the one in LI because that's close to my house and I pretty much find everything there from plates to spoons etc. If you buy something and she doesn't like it, then you are stuck with that and your money is wasted.

and NO don't rent furnished apt here in NY. Bed bugs, pets, umm you can totally imagine.

Re: Apartment...

Oh thank you ladies for interested input.

I don't think so i need 2 bedroom apartment, when it's only 2 people going to live ... secondly i am not in any mood to pay 600-800$ extra for one room.

Re: Apartment...

Clothes & lots of books.

Yes we are going to buy everything new.

What she can bring? Yeh.. clothes & jewelry.

Re: Apartment...

O nai yar it is not that much difference!! Like maybe 2-300.

From what I remember, the neighborhod you're in should be affordable..esp for a 2 BD. are u going to stay in ur current neighborhood or moving to another part of BK?

Re: Apartment...

Always keep in mind desi relatives love to visit.......an extra room comes in handy !

Re: Apartment...

^^ True. In my case, we just couldn't afford it. I would love to have two bed room apt. I still live in one bedroom :( I think difference is just 200-300 dollars though. Still a lot for some people. We pay 100 for our parking too each month.
