Re: honor killings
I have a question. Its not a simple question, but I'd like your input.
I'm writing a paper for a global policy class I'm taking in which I have to give some suggestions on how to reduce honor killings in Pakistan. I have a few ideas and am pretty comfortable speaking about Pakistan, but am not Pakistani myself, and as such I would really like some input from those who are actually familiar with the area and its people to give me a little input. What do you think the root of this problem is? How do we fix it? Who is it you'd have to talk to in order to actually get something done? Don't just debate it, what should we actually DO about it?

Unless you go and tell them, killing someone doesn't restore your honor, they won't stop honor killings. What we really need there is a rule book and a group that constantly reminds them of these rules. Also since these things aren't brought out and the court isn't involved, we need to have a group of inspectors who can go house to house occasionally (surprise visits). They should be given some authority so people are fearful of them. AND they should be hanged if they are every caught accepting bribery. Education or literacy won't do anything. These "men" are hard wired to commit such acts only to remind women that they are still the dominating ones.
