I’m thinking about it. I understand it’s quite difficult with it’s multiple tones (never mind the written language and the hundreds of characters it contains). Does anyone have any experiences with it?
Re: Anyone take up learning Chinese (mandarin)?
yeah i tired it, i still got some books like “learn chinese in 30 days” but soon lost interest in it. ![]()
But to be honest, its not that difficult, quite eazy the way i saw.
Re: Anyone take up learning Chinese (mandarin)?
it is One of the very difficult languagesyou could learn, unless you know it from birth.
you have to get the pronounciation correct becouse chinese people can then tell were the other is from acording to the way they pronounce their words.

Re: Anyone take up learning Chinese (mandarin)?
I learnt enough chinese to get me through my shopping sprees. That part of it wasn't tough at least, then again picking up the dialect is easier when you learn it from native speakers of the language.
Re: Anyone take up learning Chinese (mandarin)?
yea, I understand the tones of word can make it mean different things, you might be saying horse when yuou mean ma.
Ali, what makes you think it's easy?

Re: Anyone take up learning Chinese (mandarin)?
I have been learning putonghua last two years. I can carry on a conversation, order a meal in a Chinese restaurant, type Chinese and send e-mails etc. Still cannot read very well and have difficulty in understanding more than simple conversation. It is taking time to accustom myelf to that language.

Re: Anyone take up learning Chinese (mandarin)?
hey, pal...queer knows mandarin chinese. ask him.
Re: Anyone take up learning Chinese (mandarin)?
I took it up in university. Beginner to Intermediate using the Pinyin system.
I found it challenging but interesting - not hard. Make sure you have many mandarin speaking friends to help you through the colloquial stuff. Just like any language, most of the informalities wont be taught in class. Learning that might prove the most difficult.
Re: Anyone take up learning Chinese (mandarin)?
You must be joking. First become fluent in it and then call it not difficult. I am learning it last two years, but it is still tough.
Re: Anyone take up learning Chinese (mandarin)?
They now have Chinese at a college in Chicago, I might consider going there to take few courses.
