Anyone here old enough to have gone through the rishta process for their own kids?

Re: Anyone here old enough to have gone through the rishta process for their own kids

Well if you're doing what a lot of desis do which is pretend you're a refugee when you're really not...although I don't know under what basis they claimed that. You see these scams with the Pakistani christian community where they get asylum under claims of persecution, but no one was ever persecuting them in Pakistan.

Re: Anyone here old enough to have gone through the rishta process for their own kids

you must be sad right now thinking about all the AndyS you have not hit upon thinking that they are guys :D

Serious questions, not being snarky at all.........

  1. what was the bigger issue? the lying about being green card holders or being refugees?
  2. is being a refugee a bad thing? [/QUOTE]

It was actually both. The lying was a huge red flag. If they could lie about something like that, what else could they be lying about?

Also, since they were in the States and I was in Canada, it became an immigration/sponsorship issue as well. If they were refugees, and not even green card holders, how did they think they were going to sponsor someone from Canada to come live in USA?

scary ****....

Re: Anyone here old enough to have gone through the rishta process for their own kids

Hmmmmm

Don't get me wrong, I get the lying is a red flag and it's understandable if someone doesnt' want to go through sponsorship/immigration issues. But was wondering if being a refugee is considered a bad thing.

Someone I know got married throu a rishta aunty, after 3 months for wedding they found out that guys family was renting the house where they were living, but during rishta process they said it was their own home.
ok may be not a big issue renting/owing but we really felt bad for the girl she had to pack re entire jahaiz again and set/unpack again at new home.

Did she (fake)sign her nikah papers or used her thumb to seal the deal?

Re: Anyone here old enough to have gone through the rishta process for their own kids

The bhari bharkam amount of Haq Maher will take care of divorce option for a while and then bitya rani will become mother and they will live happily ever after!

Re: Anyone here old enough to have gone through the rishta process for their own kids

No, this is not a matter of "want" in the situation she described. Girl in Canada (I assume citizen). Guy in the U.S. as a refugee but lied claiming U.S. citizenship. The plan was for the guy to sponsor girl and bring HER to the U.S. BUT if the guy is in the U.S. as refugee, he legally cannot sponsor girl from Canada and bring her here. Meaning after marriage, they were probably going force HER to sponsor him and take him to Canada (given that the other option would be divorce).

Re: Anyone here old enough to have gone through the rishta process for their own kids

This was the issue. I should have explained better.

And about the actually being a refugee issue? Yes, to me it was a big deal. I was talking to the guy throughout the rishta process, and when it came out about them being refugees, he started to get defensive saying things like not everyone is as lucky as you to be born in a western country. And when I asked him why they claimed refugee status (like what was the issue?), he said that his fathers brothers wanted to kill them (him and his brothers) because his dad was the oldest and had all the family property in his name. Umm....I really dont think that qualifies as a true reason to pick up and come all the way to America and claim refugee status. Based on his story, it just sounded like they all wanted an easy route to USA.

If it had been a legitimate reason to claim refugee status, I may have given him a second chance, and overlooked the lying.
