Any takers? Here is the conference link..men scared of assertive women need not attend
Organisers of the first international congress on Islamic feminism are calling for a “gender jihad”.
Organiser Abdennur Prado Pavon says the struggle for gender equality in Islamic countries involves refuting chauvinist interpretations of Muslim teachings.
The congress is being held in Spain, organisers say, because they want their message to reach the growing number of Muslim women in Europe.
Around 300 delegates are looking at women’s rights in the Islamic world.
Mr Prado, of the Catalan Islamic board, believes a common misconception in the West is that women’s liberation is not possible in Muslim societies.
Activists representing the Islamic feminist movement are in Barcelona to counter that view and discuss ways of achieving female equality in an Islamic context.
Collaboration
Among the delegates is the Pakistani feminist Riffat Hassan, regarded as one of the pioneers of Islamic feminist theology.
Also here are representatives from the international association, Islamic Feminism.
Islamic Feminism argues that the inferior legal and social status of women in Muslim countries is a result of misogynistic distortions of the teachings in the Koran.
Organisers say they want more collaboration with western feminists but say non-Muslim feminists need to challenge their anti-Islamic stereotypes.
…i wish I could have gone there and i agree with the themeIslamic ***Feminism argues that the inferior legal and social status of women in Muslim countries is a result of misogynistic distortions of the teachings in the Koran. ***
As oppose to trusting the east...where earthquake victims are snatched up my "muslims" with other "muslims" looking on to be sold into slavery and prostitution?
well though i’m very carefull with westerners (cause i’m one myself so i know them well), you can’t put all the blame on them…
it is hard from the westerners to distinguish between islamic ways and traditions, so they mix all up and conclude that the many women rights abuse perpetrated in muslim countries are due to islam and not to tradition . of course i think it is false, and this seminar is a bit about it i guess…
that is what i said in post 6…but unfortunately often some people will claim that their traditions are based on islam even when it’s not…to try to justify abuses…and that adds to the confusion for westerners:(
So isn't this an excellent platform to convey this message (culture/tradition vs. Islam) to nonmuslims to enhance better mutual understanding and tolerance?
When i mention westerners i am refering to non muslim and their organisations be they NGO or government sponsored they have an agenda at all times, that is why they are not to be trusted.
parissenoor, right on. Many a times people like to justify their jahalat as being something Islamic and when asked to provide evidence, they have absolutely nothing to offer.
PCG, it would definitely be an excellent platform to clarify the misconceptions as well to hopefully educate other Muslim sisters about their rights under Islam.
I think this is the right way of looking at things. If thats what these people are looking into, I agree…
The the term “feminism” alone definitly rings a bell. As far as I think, women of today (Muslims women) are getting mal-oriented towards their status in Islam and more in line with the Western concept of “equality”. This is quite a malaised thinking.
I agree that women are maltreated but I think women should raise voice for their due status commensurate with the one given to them in Islam. Because that is what is right.
^ She means that, instead of looking at western people as all evil and not to be trusted (western feminists), look at what your own Muslims are doing to each other (exploiting earthquake victims). The link there is that we are so quick to judge non-Muslims as evil, but we don't give as much significance to the evils other Muslims are committing against others.
