Correct, the alleged kidnapping was just an excuse, IDF wanted to show its power and wanted prove something (ability to wipe Hezbollah). It succeeded partly in showing its power i.e. power of destroying buildings/infrastructure but it couldn't prove power to wipe Hezbollah, heck it couldn've even manage to wipe Hezb's arsenal as they continued to throw rockets at 100+ per day
