We are Urdu speaking. Mom is from Punjab and Dad is from Karachi..and what do i think of Punjabi/Pathan/Sindhis/Baloch/Kashmiris?..Well i don’t think any ethnicity or culture is above any other. We are Pakistanis at the end of the day…
My biggest pet-peeve has always been..when someone or matter of fact..anyone classifies or stereotypes based on their background, culture or language…
They look down upon Punjabis because we are painduzzzzz.
Muhajirs looking down on Punjabis lol
Even though they moved from India and not us Punjabis
Thats one BIG generalized statement lol. From what I know there are different casts in Punjab origin families and some of them consider themselves superior from others. No?

I’m here what you can label as “urdu speaking” or if you have any other words for it.
My opinion is strictly based on whats told by my parents. My parents strictly eliminated any sorts of differences with anyone on the name of casts, colors, races etc . So there was absolutely no difference between us or anyone else. If I can tell you about my childhood neighborhood, you’ll be surprised, or may be not. But either way I’m very proud of being brought up in a literate community neighborhood where the only recognition was which house belongs to a poet and which house belongs to a writer or editor etc. If you are interested i can give you few names. And if I remember correctly there was every single ethnicity, both sects of shias and sunny and even christians were there. Funny even christian families were both roman catholic and protestants. They used to send us cakes on christmas and my mom used to send theim “Siwayyan” on Eid telling us, “beta un logon ke ghar nahi banti islye hamen zarur bhejna chahye”. Everything is a beautiful memory.
Ok now lets talk about relationships. Growing up I saw two marriages of my uncles (mamus) in families that were Punjab origin. Now I dont call them Punjabis cuz to me its a bit judgemental. One of them was living in Karachi while other in Islo.
and if you talk about nowadays comeon, our NY community is full of a mix of every single ethnicity and we love each other.
?
What has that got to do with how some of them view Punjabis? Btw there are Punjabi “muhajirs” too, those who migrated from Indian Punjab.
^^ I concur with M! There are Punjabi families who migrated from India. Remember..Pakistan is the country of migrants from India, Bangladesh and Afghanistan and others..
We should celebrate culture diversities..instead of mingling in who is from where. And we do that in marriages a lot..pick someone of their individual qualities..instead of where they from and what language they speak..
Obviously not all of them. The generalized question elicited a generalized answer. Based on my very few personal experiences. My experiences with “muhajirs” or perhaps I should say Karachiites haven’t been very good ![]()
Tbh here in the Netherlands most of the 20k Pakis hail from Punjab including the few Punjabis from Azad Kashmir, and some from KPK and Karachi but they remain hidden. So my observations are based on those I met in the UK and Pak.
When it comes to urdu speakers, “muhajirs” or Karachiites, I sensed this disdain but also some kind of secret admiration for Punjabis ![]()
Altho jokes aside, I don’t really understand why certain people consider us Paindus when I have come across paindus in all the qaums of Pakland. It’s not a Punjabi thing. Pakistanis are paindus in general, even those who consider themselves more educated or sophisticated.
Same way for example Pashtuns are viewed in a certain way by not all Punjabis. We do the same thing. It’s tiring.
As for the “Punjabi” castes, hmm Idk if the “superiority” is visible in day-to-day life apart from when it comes to rishtas? I come from a mainly “Rajput” family but I have never disliked or looked down on any Punjabi I came across based on his/her caste, their personality yes, but not because I believed I have a more “superior” caste. I haven’t witnessed it personally. But perhaps others do?
:k:
If there’s one thing I appreciate about Karachiites it’s how they embrace all the differences between people in a way that just doesn’t happen in Punjab or other parts of Pak. Same goes for marrying someone from a different ethnic group within Pak, they’re more easygoing people.
Btw what so judgmental about calling people Punjabis if they’re originally from Punjab? ![]()
That is not true, Sid’s post actually reminded me of my childhood and I am punjabi. Where we lived, in the next neighborhood was a huge Shia population, there were also a few Christians that lived in between and everyone got along well. We had friends from shia and christian community. It wasn’t until I came here in the states that I found out about the huge divide between shias, and sunnis, as well as about any discrimination against minorities in Pakistan. Also, I have complete opposite experience of Urdu speaking peeps being easygoing when it comes to marrying punjabis, that is why broad generalizations are not a good idea.
**Yes **Das Reich **me I owe a Lot to my Muhajir and Syed Urdu Speaking Friend from Lucknow!
No one other than my immediate Family has done more for me than this Friend, May Allah Bless Him !..:k:**
So here are my 2 cents.
I was born in a Punjabi family from both sides and I only lived first 12 years of my life in Pakistan and virtually all time spent in Karachi.
I found the great majority of people to be very courteous, polite, mild-mannered and rather sophisticated despite being generally poorer than Punjabis. There is definitely discrimination against them e.g Sindh being the only province with a quota system favouring rural population at the expense of urban populations, and you will hardly see any Urdu-speaking in federal or provincial positions of power. Funnily I have never encountered a single Urdu-speaking police-man in Sindh, not even lowly ranked.
Whenever I mention this to my Punjabi cousins from Lahore and Gujranwala, they do not believe me, but you have to live in Karachi to perceive this.
I dont know about those muhajris dont know any Punjabi Muhajirs
punjabis are the true muhajirs , have great respect for them and they suffered a lot in the process
my family came to karachi from lucknow but we came for economic reasons my grandfather was well loved by muslim and hindus alike in lucknow but after he left the indian govt confiscated a lot of his lands
with hindsight it was a great decision my father mother my siblings got a lot of great educational/economic opportunities in karachi and later in USA which we could never have been possible in lucknow india
You are very big hearted to say this my friend , the sophistication is because most of the immigration came from urban areas of india which have been urban for centuries but what urdu speakers dont realize is if you go to the heartland of UP rural areas you will find a lot of country bumpkins there as well.
quota system was regrettable but similar to the affirmitive action here in US
very true about the police and govt services , but this is not unusual for most displaced diaspora.Maybe the memon and agha khani subgroup of muhajir fared the best due to their old money
unfortunately many of us do , but such sterotypes are common about almost every group
plus karachi being inferior culturally to lahore [atleast until the 80s] made this worse
