Deodorants with Aluminum Chlorhydrate
COULD SMELLING GOOD BE BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH
Are we putting our health at risk every time we use a deodorant?
Smelling delicious and staying sweat free has never been so simple:
with a handy underarm spray or a roll on, perspiration can be blocked
and body odor erased. Indeed, most of us count anti perspirants and
deodorants as hygiene essentials, making them year round best sellers.
But suggestions are now surfacing that long term use of these products
may actually be harmful to our health.
The Aluminum Theory:
There is a difference between an antiperspirant and a deodorant: a
deodorant breaks down sweat and destroys the bacteria that cause body
odor; an antiperspirant acts on the sweat glands and can reduce
sweating by upto 50%. One of the key ingredients in anti perspirants is
aluminum chlorhydrate, a salt that reduces perspiration, and there are
two theories about how it does this, says David Thompson, the Director
of Marketing for Arrid Extra Dry. It either constricts the pores or
it forms a PLUG to block them. But aluminum is currently under
scientific scrutiny following claims that raised levels of this metal
have been found in the brains of some people who had Alzheimers
disease. In 1995, the Archives of Toxicology published the results of
a study by French scientists from the Toxicology Laboratory at
Bordeaux University: when aluminum chloride (once commonly used in
antiperspirants) was applied to the shaved skin of lab mice, the
aluminum in their brains doubled. This seems to suggest that the metal
may be absorbed by the skin, a concern that has only been compounded
by the recent appearance on the market of aluminum free
antiperspirants. A number of studies have suggested a possible link between
Alzheimer and aluminum says Prof. Jim Edwardson, Director Of the Medical
Research Council Neurochemical Pathology Unit at Newcastle General
Hospital. None of them individually warrant concern but collectively
they mean we need to investigate such circumstantial evidence to be
sure there is no connection.

Sara, try using one that is stronger and lasts longer.

Re: Anti-perspirants... bad?
Mahru, thanks for the excerpt. I had no idea the two are different.
I suppose deodrants are then alright?
Re: Anti-perspirants... bad?
I've heard that they do keep you from getting rid of wastes/toxins, so there might be harmful side effects.
Re: Anti-perspirants... bad?
it's all a conspiracy. your armpits aren't the only place you sweat. heck, you sweat all over the place. metals are always in your body, and your food is chock full of them. so what if you do want to make your 'pits smell nice. i say use whatever you think is alright really.
Re: Anti-perspirants… bad?
Yeah I never understood that, u sweat all over, so why only somethin for armpits? Why not somethin for somewher eelse ![]()
Re: Anti-perspirants... bad?
^^ yea, it's called bathing :P
Re: Anti-perspirants... bad?
i think deodarants are fine cause they just have a nice smell..which covers up the odour..
as for anit-perspirants, those are the ones that block the sweat from coming out..
as for whether or not anit-persipirants are bad for your health cause they don't let out the bad 'stuff' ...i really wouldn't know. but it's not like you're wearing it for 24/7. eventually you take showers...errrmm, i mean you take a shower everyday :D ..so shrugs
Re: Anti-perspirants… bad?
^ Or twice a week if ur desi ![]()
Re: Anti-perspirants... bad?
I know this sounds a bit gross to some but I stopped using deodorant recently. I shower 2x daily (morning and night) and I found that I really dont smell or sweat profusly. My main reason for discontinuing it is beacause of reasons mentioned above.
btw I was inspired by Mathew McConahay to ditch the deodorant :D
Re: Anti-perspirants… bad?
ewww…so it was you i was smelling all along! sara…go to a shower! ![]()
Re: Anti-perspirants… bad?
Nuh uhhhhnnnnnnnnhhhhh

Is that okay ??

do you do heavy exercise or go running outside in the summer?
If you stay indoors all day long w/ minimal physical activity then yes I can say you probably don't sweat profusely.
Re: Anti-perspirants... bad?
Well the only time i do sweat profusly is during my heavy excersices.... (daily 6 days a week) but i dont sweat to the point where it smells. Some people sweat even when they are not active. Either way deodorant or not you are going to sweat. It's just a matter of if you stink or not.
Re: Anti-perspirants… bad?
6 days a week!!
what do u do?
I wish i had that himmat to do it ![]()
Re: Anti-perspirants... bad?
Wax your armpits every two weeks or so and you'll find it stops you getting body odour, and of course shower regularly (every day not just on jummua).
A bit of a sweaty smell (but not rotten rancid) is fetishingly hot on the right people.
Re: Anti-perspirants… bad?
I actually enjoy it…there are some really fun cardio classes out there. You should try them you might enjoy them 2. Running on a tread mill or even jogging outside gets really boring after a while.
3 days a week I do jazzercise. 2 days I do kick boxing, and 1 day i do this cardio sculpt class. Then 3 times a week after cardio i do weight training. I also take karate classes. Every week varies since it is nice outside. Somedays I’ll just go rollerblading outside or go jogging with some friends.
My gym is really good they offer a variety of classes.![]()
