I think it has to do more with the geo-political situation of Swat than religion. The attack was likely against an "establishment’s asset" on the pattern of Bamiyan.
Bamiyan was also to stoke and incite world's attention rather than denunciation of Buddhism itself. It was remarkably hypocritical of the world to shed tears over the carvings, whilst hundreds and thousands of people were suffering due to drought and crippling sanctions. Mind you, this was before 9/11 when Taliban were in control and Afghanistan rarely made into the world headlines.
Justification based on religion is nonsensical here from any angle; it's not an actual motive.
The Taliban should have thought about the crippling sanctions and their peoples suffering before allowing murderers like the Al Qaeda and Osama setup tents within their borders...
And since when did the Taliban care about the suffering people? Its well documented the Human rights violations that occured under them... They werent exactly generous towards the Hazara...
If you want to look at this from a religous stand point, then God himself must have imposed those sanction and eventually destroyed the Taliban to punish them for their evil.. The destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas was an extension of that evil.
So if anyone is being hypocritical, its those who shed their crocadile tears for the suffering of innocents all while supporting the very group that inflicts that suffering, your beloved Taliban...
Im betting that the statues will be rebuilt eventually one way or the other... The Taliban will be forgotten like the toilet turds they are... But the Bamiyan buddhas will be built again.
