Another Letter prompted by Musharraf's misrule and corruption

The following letter goes to show you what level of corruption and despotic measures Mushie has engaged in so that he can stay in power…Mushie is a reincarnation of Bhattu and will only leave the helm after draining the country of all its assets and dignity, toping it all off by the breakup of the entity known as Paksitan…

Another letter urges president to quit army: ‘Federation facing fault lines’

By Iftikhar A. Khan
ISLAMABAD, Aug 15: Some prominent personages have urged President Gen Pervez Musharraf to quit his army post and let the Supreme Court conduct elections through a neutral caretaker government.

In a letter, they warned that ‘fault lines’ had emerged in underpinnings of the federation during his tenure in office.

The signatories include former caretaker prime minister Mir Balakh Sher Mazari, former chief justices Sajjad Ali Shah and Saeeduzzaman Siddiqui, National Assembly’s former speakers Elahi Bakhsh Soomro and Syed Fakhar Imam, former governor of Balochistan and NWFP Miangul Aurangzeb, former chief minister of Balochistan Mir Taj Muhammad Jamali and former NA deputy speaker Wazir Ahmed Jogezai.

They said provincial discord and disharmony was being exacerbated by single-minded pursuit of policies which “must be subjected to urgent scrutiny”. “In our considered opinion these policies now pose a serious threat to the integrity, solidarity and wellbeing of Pakistan,” they said.

They expressed concern over the military action in Balochistan and Federally Administered Tribal Areas. In many areas and in numerous communities in Balochistan and Fata, women and children, the sick and the elderly, were being denied access to food and water as thousands of houses were currently under siege. On the other hand, ISPR bulletins continue to inform the media that ‘miscreants’ and ‘hidden hands’ were inflaming ‘insurgency’.

“This revives the ghosts of memories from the days of East Pakistan,” the letter said.

The former legislators, politicians and jurists said many of them had given him (Musharraf) the benefit of doubt as the seemingly ‘reluctant coup maker’, when the military took over for a fourth time.

“The Constitution of Pakistan, incrementally distorted though it may have been from its original text of 1973, primarily to meet the strategic exigencies of your predecessor regimes, was further mauled in the fourth year of your dispensation and endorsed by a legislature perceived by the public to be no more than a rubber stamp,” they said.

They reminded the president that promises he had made to people over the past seven years remained unfulfilled. They said his term in office had brought unbearable inflation, rampant lawlessness, increased graft and corruption, no improvement in agricultural or public utility services, nor in public education and healthcare, nor in containing population growth.

They accused Gen Musharraf of allowing the state to abdicate its responsibilities and pointed out that the privatisation of institutions had not been above controversy. “The fiscal space allowed to your government after 9/11 is not far from being exhausted and the taint and odour of corrupt practices which you seemed to disdain are all around you,” the letter said.

The luminaries deplored that President Musharraf had failed to respect his own oath of office while publicly insisting that he never violated the Constitution. They urged Gen Musharraf to relinquish the office of Chief of Army Staff which was being held by him for almost nine years, and dignify the office of president by obeying the Constitution.

“We earnestly beseech you, general, to hand over to the apex court, largely constituted by yourself, to conduct elections strictly in accordance with the Constitution, through a consensual neutral caretaker government.”

Re: Another Letter prompted by Musharraf's misrule and corruption

I think, he is way worse than Bhutto.

Anyways, didn't some other poeple sent him a letter a few weeks ago too. I wonder what happened to that one.

Re: Another Letter prompted by Musharraf's misrule and corruption

CheGuvera,

There were other problems with ZAB such as ego, proudness, etc but not corruption. Zia-ul-Haq made a "&%$ Torh" effort to dug out even single minor corrupton case. He was unsuccessful. By dragging Bhutto in every *y thing show how you are morally corrupt and a liar too. Why inthe hell you post this **y information. Are you saying that since Bhutto was corrupt it is o.k for everyone to be corrupt. Go to mantle hospital and get your brain examined.

FARID

Re: Another Letter prompted by Musharraf's misrule and corruption

ZAB was a stupid Sindhi trying to become a Punjabi.. Unfortunately, he was hugely unsuccessful. Talk of corruption, he was very very corrupt. Benazir learnt first lessons of corruption from his abba. General Zia on the other hand was a pious muslim and he tried controling many movements that would have otherwise caused problems to Pakistan.

Re: Another Letter prompted by Musharraf's misrule and corruption

^ Bhutto was not corrupt or a thief like others but he was power hungry dictator... But than who isn't....

Re: Another Letter prompted by Musharraf’s misrule and corruption

 you obviously haven’t lived in Pakistan, and believe everything your dumb Punjabi relatives tell you.

The ill effects of Zia’s horrid rule can be felt even today

Re: Another Letter prompted by Musharraf's misrule and corruption

Niether Zia nor Musharaf are here by dafault. Both times Americans needed an adventure in Afganistan we had military dictators in Pakistan...... coincidence...Dont think so. Sad thing is whatever you think of Bhutto or Nawaz sharif ,they were elected PM's and didnt deserve the treatment they received. Mulz man sad to hear your tone. I am no Bhutto fan but i agreehe was one of the most prudent leaders we ever had. But Zia's failure to dig any cases against bhutto shouldnt be seen as a proof of his ignorance. Cause musharaf has failed to dig anything against Sharif as well. And we all know there was corruption involved with both ZAB and N Sharif.
Sticking to the thead , an important point raised in this letter is about the financial leverage that this givt received post 9/11 and how its about to run out. And lack of prudent long term planning only means that the common man will be severly hampered when economy slows down.

Re: Another Letter prompted by Musharraf's misrule and corruption

Zia was the most corrupt, mentally deranged ruler Pakistan ever had. I have always said and will say again "Zia was Allah revenge on Pakistan." The man was pathetic in everything he did. Incompetent to the core.

Re: Another Letter prompted by Musharraf's misrule and corruption

i see left.. i see right.. i see ppl dissing ma poor mushie.. bt the weird thing is.. under this dudes rule.. each time i come to pak.. there is improvement.. ive been comin to pak continuously for past 4 yrs.. staying their for 3 months each time.. m sure thats enuf to see the difference.. and i see improvement from the yr before..

corruption.. first of all.. one man cannot change things over night.. it is the citizens responsibility too to standup and fight corruption.. have u eva checkd or asked ur parents how they got their income??? i mean these people who are runnin the country are not just ppl sent from the ground.. it is the very ppl livin inside the country.. stop sittin on ur asses and cmplainin.. changes start at home.. yes its not easy.. bt try little bit.. just like u cant change ur financial healt over night.. in the same way it cant happen for a country..

we are people who are always suspecting.. and we have lost soo much faith that we deny every person now.. yes i am not sayin hes doin a GREAT job.. bt atlest hes put the country in a more solid position as compared to wat ppl before him did..

there is more media freedom, more people standin up and criticising.. was it allowed in the old regime.?? have u actually chekd out.. the ppl who are sendin the letters maybe are corrupt themseleves??? m not sayin they are.. bt m askin.. there is no proof what is the intention of the guy..

neway i just hope positive for pak.. how ever it comes..

Allah hafiz

Re: Another Letter prompted by Musharraf's misrule and corruption

Of course the country has improve some. Post 9/11, US/West are giving many advantages to Pakistan that allow us to grow a bit. But when the US dumps Pakistan as it always does, we will be back to the same situation as normal, no matter who is in power.

As for media 'freedom', big news organisations have the ability to fight back, but smaller regional ones regularly report being threatned and their reporters mysteriously killed by the agencies.

As for corruption, if you live in Pak, you will know it never decreased, and is growing everyday.

Re: Another Letter prompted by Musharraf's misrule and corruption

I am sorry man Cheebu but you have presented a lay mans view of the situation. More fancy cars on the roads and more sky scrapers doesnt mean that country is doing well. Last few years have been a result of as Real Deal said relaxation in US sanctions and narrowing down of investment oppurtunities for public to invest plus increse in oversees remittances created a cash pool in the economy which we very lavishly has thrown away on buying cars, houses and building pointless skyscrapers. The property boom the stock exchange boom are all artificial. The big fish has made billions and are now preparing to pack the bags. In the first few years pre 9/1 this very govt was doing poorly. Even now the inflation rate is as high as its ever been. Corruption has always been a problem but its very systemetic and i would say its institutionalised even. NAB being only used as a black mailing tool by the govt to win opposition MNA's. What else could you expect when NAB convicts are serving as ministers.

Re: Another Letter prompted by Musharraf's misrule and corruption

The previous 18 and these eight people are a ray of hope for the future of Pakistan. For once some prominent Pakistanis are looking into the future, rather than the past over which nobody has a final say. IF you read the letters, it says what every Pakistani wants, a secure future with a stable political system representative of Pakistanis, rule of law and justice. The "President" dosent have to send a man to the moon for all that. The message is as important as the people who have written it.

Re: Another Letter prompted by Musharraf's misrule and corruption

How can you say living in the UK, sir? Zia was a pious muslim who kept always kept Quran close to his heart and FYI, a copy of Quran was found with him even when he died. How often you come across such rulers? Plus, he had the guts to implement Shariah.. I know this from my family members since I was too young. Could you tell me more about his rule?

Re: Another Letter prompted by Musharraf's misrule and corruption

Bhutto was better than Mushy because he was elected. But his economic policies were so pathetic. Nationalizing banks and everything was simply the worst idea ever. it threw off all the investments and confidence.

Zia was not better either. he wasted years and years of PK and achieved almost nothing but again he was better than Mushy. Atleast he wasn't negative.
I somewhat agree with Mulz here. Zia was not corrupt, I guess.

His problem was that he involved himself 100% in afghan war which was fine but he was supposed to takecare of PK economy as well which he didn't or couldn't.

Re: Another Letter prompted by Musharraf’s misrule and corruption

Only stupid fundo’s like you believe that garbage.

Zia was just another idiot who used Islam to prolong his rule while making his billions.

Pious Muslim? :cb: You are so easy to fool. You just don’t know what your talking about.

Go back to your dumb uncles who ‘educate’ you

Re: Another Letter prompted by Musharraf’s misrule and corruption

Then, explain to me why India did not dare to attack Pakistan during General Zia’s time? cuz they knew he would not stop and drive India back. Many developments took place in his time..he directed money towards building infrastructure and helping the poor. He made people work with his fear and anger. I don’t think he was corrupt at all.. yes, he had liking for bollywood films which almost every Pakistani has  I am not upset at you cuz many like you in Pakistan are jealous of Punjabi intelligence and thinking and reasoning capability.

Re: Another Letter prompted by Musharraf's misrule and corruption

what a load of horse shi t..people who have supported the most corrupt govts in the past like that of benazir and shareef accusing musharraf of corruption.how does the situation in balochistan compare to that in east pakistan..bugtis maaris are less than 2% of the population in balochistan and they are all thugs.musharraf may not be perfect, but the politicians accusing him of corruption and mismanagement are conniving thieving pricks who in the past have brought nothing, but misery to pakistan.somebody tell these people to go f themselves.

Re: Another Letter prompted by Musharraf's misrule and corruption

Not that Mushy has much credibility, people listed above cannot claim any either. 90% of the names cited have been asoociated with military regimes one way or the other, while some have the distinction and audacity to sit on some of the biggest goofups in Pakistan history yet continue to survive.

Misrule? Pakistan is replete with misrule from all quarters and much of its history, we lost half of the country, left 250 thousand Pakis stranded for 35years, bombed our people, violated the constitution on numerous occassions, incarcerated writers & poets for their ideas, imprisoned innocent people and the list goes on and on. Fact is, Pakistanis mentioned above have been associated with all these injustices directly or indirectly, none have ever shown the basic decency of accepting their mistakes but have no problem in expressing their views when it means f=headlines.

Re: Another Letter prompted by Musharraf's misrule and corruption

Zia's body was identified because of his dental record not because of a quran found near him, by the way this is the first time I am hearing this. A friend of mine was in the first responders to the site at Bahawelpur, by the time they reached the site 99% of the bodies were like charcoal. So you can rest assure that this is what is buried near Faisal Mosque.

Anyway, thats not the issue here, what these people are saying is that General Mushraf has the time and the resources to finish the culture of political short cuts in our society. Tell the people that there is a system in Pakistan and it is based on the constitution of Pakistan, thats all. Restore the 1973 constitution as it is, and let the SC handle the 2007-08 general elections.

Fartguru, what you are saying is right , few have been part of the current administration, but what they are asking for is the future with no role for them, I think thats one indications that they are not doing it for themselves.

Re: Another Letter prompted by Musharraf's misrule and corruption

I know Zia and his family very well. let me tell you about this corrupt idiot who even used Islam to prolong his rule. Here is one example. I can give you many more.

I was financial advisor to the General incharge of Military hospital in Riyadh. Zia's son and son in law were working there, where, by the way, they didn't get the job because they were competent but because papa pulled some strings. Zia's son in law after working for two years decided to go to UK for further studies. Shortly after he left, one day I got a call from the Hospital director to see him. When I got to his office he asked we what sort of a pathetic president we had. I asked him why, he gave me a letter from King Fahad in which the king had asked the hospital to pay for Zia's son in law's expenses and course fees in UK. He than showed me a letter form Zia to the Saudi king which was attached to the kings letter in which Zia had requested the king to pay for his son in laws studying expenses. I wonder whether Zia wrote any other letters to the king asking for money for more deserving Pakistanis to be educated in UK.

While his son and son in law were working in the hospital they had access to a chauffer driven embassy car 24/7.
