Announcement of "Deal" and Uniform soon

Re: Announcement of “Deal” and Uniform soon

part of the deal is to make nazims “non-functional” (oh nostalgia) :jano:

Re: Announcement of "Deal" and Uniform soon

If all goes to plan by the end of the first week of September the 18th amendment to the constitution will be passed, encompassing the changes agreed in the deal. Pakistan's political alliances will look radically different in a weeks time, and the PPP walas will have to start praising the Commander-in-Chief and President Pervez Musharraf. :)

Re: Announcement of “Deal” and Uniform soon

RP, u obviously did not know that President of Pakistan has been the C-in-C since 1973? That even to start a war, the PM has to send a summary to the President to order the forces out? :faizy:

but..chalo. if u only just got to know this, toh I won’t rain on your parade.

Re: Announcement of “Deal” and Uniform soon

BB seems to be preparing for Aitzaz going his own way.

Asked a number of PPP leaders were against any deal with President Musharraf, Benazir said, “We will not strike agreement with an individual, rather we will do this for the sake of democracy. As far as party members are concerned, all repose full confidence in my leadership and understand that the party leadership will take decision in the best interest of the nation,” she added. “If anyone has difference of opinion, he can adopt separate path because nothing can be imposed on anyone in a democracy,” she stated.

Re: Announcement of "Deal" and Uniform soon

aitezaz is not hooking up with Nawaz. He is too much of a secular/liberal to adjust to Nawaz's conservative values. I still don't see him leaving the party. He'll show his dissent and whatever but will eventually stick to the party or at the most resign from the politics so long as Musharraf is around. If he jumps ship, it'll do more damage to him than PPP.

Re: Announcement of "Deal" and Uniform soon

yeah right now aetezas is thinking big, thinking bigger than he actually is...

Re: Announcement of “Deal” and Uniform soon

well I think the cliché about the rank of FM being eligible only when one is a multiple or highly significant war winning General ought to be taken with a diff angle…
traditionally speaking even a General was an officer only who had had extensive war, strategy and victory experience on his file. These days all armed forces including the British on whose pattern ours are designed and the US that everyone idolizes, produce ‘theoretical’ generals more than ‘practical experience’ generals. These have been inevitable post WWII changes…
So why cant there be a Field Marshall out of practical necessity…? he is the grandest and most senior of Generals/Admirals/Air Marshalls now and has served the Army well. Practically he can make this move very easily…

Re: Announcement of "Deal" and Uniform soon

You know, while these rather exciting times, a deal between Mush and BB doesnt inspire much confidence...
Obviously, the deal means will mean BB will be PM no matter what, so that obviously means that election will be rigged if need be... I mean outcome of the election is already certain...
So not sure how this is good for Pakistan... Election will not be a demonstration of democracy, but political expediency!

Re: Announcement of "Deal" and Uniform soon

Aitzaz will be just another MNA in PPP if he goes along with BB's deal. He grew in stature by pleading for CJ and he'll loose all the respect he has earned if he becomes a Lota.

Re: Announcement of "Deal" and Uniform soon

I don't think there is talk of making Musharraf "Field Marshal" like Ayub Khan, but actually bolstering the powers of the position of Commander-in-Chief, which the President of Pakistan is also constitutionally. There will be a transfer of miilitary command (especially on key corps like Pindi and Karachi) from the COAS to the Commander-in-Chief, which is what BB is hinting at i.e. "American's and Army support Musharraf ". Also American think tanks diplomats have been suggesting the same for quite a while now.

Re: Announcement of "Deal" and Uniform soon

Youre right Reza. but I just hope it works out this way..the wardi is far too important. I wonder if such maneuvering will result in the desired way. He has the FM option for this practical use and he should stick with that i guess...I am a bit confused at the moment and also paranoid abt him trying to control the Army as a civilian C-in-C, how workable will it be and how exactly will he gather that power and sustain it as a civilian are some of my serious concerns.

Re: Announcement of “Deal” and Uniform soon

Sharif to arrive on September 10.

Commenting on the government-Benazir negotiations, the former prime minister said that he does not know what dialogue is going on between them.

He said that he did not understand that what were Benazir’s objectives. He said that the deal with the government would be political death of Benazir

Re: Announcement of "Deal" and Uniform soon

Haha dodo you signed the "Mesak-i-Jamhooriat" (charter of democracy) with her last year, and everyone was telling you she would screw you, but you did not listen. Fool you.

Re: Announcement of "Deal" and Uniform soon

You are absolutely right, but now in the era of free media and free judiciary (thanks to President Musharaf :) ) people should have no excuses for making wrong choices. However, the feudal political culture must go to make sure of this.

Re: Announcement of "Deal" and Uniform soon

Anyone, who has had "experience" [basically commercial contacts as I hear these days due to our "business minded" army] can eventually become a general. Field marshal is a special honor and I think it really depends upon the winning exploits on a battlefield. You have, for example, field marshal rommel whose Afrika Corps won victories to get him to gain that title. I just wonder that why didn't Zia or yahya appoint himself that rank if it all really comes down to is the title?

Could it be that field marshals can command multiple armies??? Technically, ayub could claim to command the westerna and eastern pakistan command, though we know how much of an "eastern command" really existed..

Re: Announcement of “Deal” and Uniform soon

In the original 1973 constitution, wasn’t the President very “tooth- less” with the PM having all the powers [like appointing the forces chief, which incidently were supposed to fall under the assistan defence secretary? :hehe: ]. Wouldn’t that make the PM the commander-in-chief?

Re: Announcement of "Deal" and Uniform soon

This sounds more plausible, for is he will be Field Marshal, then shedding the uniform becomes meaningless. Probably, more powers to President in military issues.

Re: Announcement of "Deal" and Uniform soon

Any powers/titles that Musharraf concedes as COAS will be transferred to the Commander in Chief and Presindent offices which is what BB has subtly conceded. She has said publicly stated that the international community (re America) and the Army are solidly behind Musharraf, and she cannot overlook these realities. The original 12 Oct 99 coup is an apt demonstration of how the entire Army rallied round and moved to support Musharraf when he was in the air his plane hijacked by that dodo Nawaz Sharif. That was an impressive demonstration of loyatly by the Army which had the Sharif's in tears and gasping for breath in shock. Musharraf is an Army man through and through and no General has been more popular than him, and I believe soldiers will be proud to salute their greatly empowered Commander-in-Chief.

Re: Announcement of "Deal" and Uniform soon

Hmm, I hope what Mush is doing he's doing with 110% confidence, because these are very risky waters now...power to the C-in-C!

Re: Announcement of "Deal" and Uniform soon

Most recent news is that Chowdry bradran have said in the eve they'd have the Pres re-elected in wardi!
And that the reports of dealfinalized upto 80% are false, and the deal is no more than 8-9%

And Shaikh Rasheed says there was a meeting in the afternoon after which the arrangements which seemed obvious yesterday seem very hazy suddenly.

I hope it's abt the wardi!
