LEEDS: Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi called for the review system to be introduced into one-day internationals but saved his strongest criticism for Mohammad Irfan after another loss to England.

In what turned out to be a tense finish, England won the second one-day international by four wickets with three balls to spare as they went 2-0 up in their five-match series against Pakistan.

But the result might have been different had not 7ft seamer Irfan, positioned at short fine leg, dropped a glance from Andrew Strauss when the England captain had made just 23.

It was a costly error with Strauss going on to make 126 as England, replying to Pakistan’s 294 for eight, finished on 295 for six.

Strauss also appeared to be given another reprieve on 38 when wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal, changing direction and diving full length to his right, held what he thought was a one-handed catch off fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar.

But the decision review system (DRS), increasingly common in Test cricket, has yet to be introduced into the one-day international format and Pakistan were unable to challenge West Indian umpire Billy Doctrove’s not out verdict.

Afridi, asked if DRS should feature in limited overs internationals, replied: “It will be good in matches like this and big series like this."

“It’s important in cricket now. I know in Twenty20 you don’t have much time but in one-day cricket you would.”But Strauss said: “I wasn’t sure it hit my glove. The umpires are there to make a decision.”Any thoughts about DRS in one-day cricket would have been stilled if Irfan had caught Strauss.

Poor fielding has plagued Pakistan for several years and Afridi’s patience is clearly at an end.

“I’m really disappointed with this guy (Irfan),” he said. “Cricket is not all about just batting and bowling, nowadays fielding is very important. Maybe if he is good in the field I will give him a chance but otherwise I am not happy.” But Pakistan, with Kamran Akmal making 74 and Asad Shafiq a maiden fifty, at least ran England close.

“I’m quite happy, the boys put in some effort. We have three more games and definitely we will get a result (win),” Afridi added.

Pakistan’s tour of Britain has been overshadowed by newspaper allegations of a betting scam that saw no-balls deliberately bowled in the fourth Test against England at Lord’s last month.

The claims, published in the News of the World, led to the suspension of Pakistan Test captain Salman Butt and bowlers Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif by the International Cricket Council.

But the Pakistan supporters in a capacity 18,500 crowd got behind their side and there was no jeering by England fans.

Afridi said he hoped the support would be maintained during the remaining three matches of this series, which continues at The Oval on Friday before moving across London to Lord’s a week on Sunday before finishing at Hampshire’s Rose Bowl on September 22.

“It’s a very great sign and we are expecting more fans in London and Hampshire as well. If we play cricket at this level, definitely the crowd will come and they will enjoy the game,” he said.

Man-of-the-match Strauss has opted out of Twenty20 internationals and his worth as a one-day batsman has been questioned by several pundits.

But the left-handed opener, after scoring his second one-day century in three matches, said: “I’ve worked very hard on trying to expand my game a little bit.

“I’m very happy with my game at the moment, and even happier we’re continuing to win. All I can do is do my talking with the bat and help England win cricket matches.

“People can talk as much as they like. It’s pretty irrelevant to me.” Turning to Pakistan, Strauss said: “It’s obviously a tough time for them, with a lot of distractions off the pitch.

“The last two games they’ve played very well, and it goes to show that they’re a dangerous side and not easy to beat.” Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzaq, yet to feature in this series, is due to have a scan on a back injury ahead of The Oval match.

Re: Angry Afridi cuts Irfan down to size

Good, i hope this makes Irfan learn a lesson and work hard on all three aspects of his game. Competing at the highest level is not like a game in backyard.

Re: Angry Afridi cuts Irfan down to size

as if rest of them are all Jhontys!

Re: Angry Afridi cuts Irfan down to size

Yeah exactly... replace 'o' with 'a' to best describe pakistani fielders...

Re: Angry Afridi cuts Irfan down to size

What a crap he himself is! What about his buddies' fieldings? Is Kamran Akmal the best of keepers? Is Salman Butt (though he didn't play in this game) best of the fielders? There are many more of his buddies who drop easiest of catches I don't recall Afridi blaming them.

What about your own batting you shmuck?

Re: Angry Afridi cuts Irfan down to size

Irfan really does fumble a lot. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with his height but he is terrible in the field. His bowling is also pretty ordinary and he was cramping a lot.

Re: Angry Afridi cuts Irfan down to size

They should have thought about these things before inducting a guy with a huge experience of 10 first class matches into the BIG scene at difficult times in an intimidating atmosphere.

We do tend to destroy some young players by putting them directly in the firing line without grooming them. Some get intimidated, some carried away (Amir) and some humiliated.

Re: Angry Afridi cuts Irfan down to size

Every passing day, Afridi is proving himself to be more and more inept in handling the captaincy. Sadly, he doesn't seem to be the man I thought he was. Publicly dressing down your players is a big no-no for any international captain. These things should be handled privately, not in the press.

And it's not as if the rest of Pakistan's fielding is top-notch and Irfan is the only non-performer. If Afridi's remarks are to be taken at face value, then most of the team would need to be dumped, and only Afridi, Fawad Alam, and maybe Umar Akmal will play. Pathetic leadership by Afridi.

And what's with the "Maybe if he's good in the field Ill give him a chance otherwise I am not happy". His captaincy is barely 2 weeks old and already he's acting like a dictator?

Re: Angry Afridi cuts Irfan down to size

He is right .......he should lead from the front

irfan sucks at fielding

Re: Angry Afridi cuts Irfan down to size

He has been given a clean chit by the bookie MM and now he is the ultimate untouchable marde momin, trying to act authoritarian like imran khan without substance offcourse.

Re: Angry Afridi cuts Irfan down to size

Brainless Afridi at it again. This is no way to humiliate a youngster in public!! Very harsh words. You can do all this in the dressing room and practices if you want to send him a clear signal. What is the point of doing it in public like this?

This all looks even more retarded given that Pak fielding in general is rubbish.. so why so much sht for Irfan?

Brainless !

Re: Angry Afridi cuts Irfan down to size

Exactly :k:

Going by his own words, the whole team including himself, should be dropped :vivo:

Re: Angry Afridi cuts Irfan down to size

khachur!

Re: Angry Afridi cuts Irfan down to size

I think Afridi did this for public consumption. There is a lot of speculation over missed catches and inadvertent misses. Afridi wanted to pre-empt that...

At times I feel it is necessary to give dressing downs in public. This has a impact on other fielders as well.

Re: Angry Afridi cuts Irfan down to size

Amazing comments. yes fielding by everyone is rubbish but when a new guy comes in and does the same thing and gets told off everyone jumps on the captain and post things like he himself is no good and other players do it as well. This is like saying why bother, dont say anything to the guy who dropped the match. Wah wah. carry on.

A blast against irfan was probably against the whole team as the next guy will be afraid of sropping because he will get the same treatment from Afridi.

Re: Angry Afridi cuts Irfan down to size

It is not like Afridi publicly blasted Irfan at a press conference. Most likely he made his frustration known to a reporter during an informal chat

And I agree with kudlaguy that it is necessary sometimes to give such dressing downs in public.

Re: Angry Afridi cuts Irfan down to size

Pakistani team isnt very good at fielding but the current lot is a lot better than our traditional teams. Hafeez, Umar Akmal, Umar Gul, Shahid Afridi, Asad Shafiq, Azhar Ali are all decent fielders. And Irfan sucks even by club standards, the guy was on his knees and fumbling every time ball came towards him. Nothing wrong in captain telling him, he better work it out quickly.

Re: Angry Afridi cuts Irfan down to size

Did he say the same about Rawalpindi shuttle after first game when he dropped the dolly?

Re: Angry Afridi cuts Irfan down to size

Akhtar is the pick of the bowlers in this series so far

but even look at irfan's bowling

Re: Angry Afridi cuts Irfan down to size

Where was his outrage when his buddies were dropping catches like anything? I agree that our standard needs to be high but harsh criticism of new players in public is trash and nothing else, why use him as escape goat?

We need to get out of this 'it was said in an informal sitting' when we know all such things become headline next day.
