ANAM's (Anam Falak) Make-up classes: a review

I went to Pakistan in December, and was really excited to take the make-up classes I’d had my mother sign me up for 3 months in advance. Unfortunately, my experience was not very good at all, and I think it’ll be useful to post a review.

Firstly, the class size was of 29 students, which considering the size of the studio was too much. The number of students also made it impossible for Anam to actually look at anyone’s face and give make-up advice accordingly (even though this is what I’d been told would happen). If anyone did dare to ask for advice according to their own features, they were given an eye-roll (courtesy Anam) and told to “use (their) common sense”.

Which brings me to her attitude. I’d checked to make sure that the course was suitable for beginners, through previous students and Anam’s studio itself. I’d been assured that it was perfect for people who had no idea about what to do with make-up. The reality was that every time I asked a basic question, I was given a rude, short and unhelpful answer. Since I can be quite stubborn, I’d keep asking, which only led to more rudeness but eventually a passable answer. This was not what I paid for.

Speaking of payment. The course costs Rs. 20,000. I’m a student, and it was hard for me to convince myself to spend that amount, but I thought Anam’s “professionalism” would be worth it. Instead, her complete lack of punctuality really made me regret the amount I spent. The classes were supposed to start at 6 pm sharp and end at 8 pm. They always started 35 minutes late and one day, even an hour. Even then Anam would be in a hurry to get out of there. She would give us her demonstration in 30 to 45 minutes and instead of sticking around to see the results of our practice would promptly disappear. All of us students were left to analyze each other’s make-up and dole out advice. Definitely not worth 20,000.

Even though the course was advertised as being 5 days long (this duration was posted of FB, written on my receipt, told personally to me multiple times), on the 3rd day we were suddenly told that it was 6 days long. This would not have been a problem, except for the fact that because I was in Karachi for such a short time period, I had travel plans for the 6th day and ended up having to reschedule my “test” which was inconvenient. The test was really the cherry on top. After 5 other girls and I had spent an hour applying our make-up, Anam’s hairstylist walked in with a camera and informed us that Anam was not available to check our make-up. She wanted us to get our pictures taken so that Anam could give us feedback, but in the meantime, here was a stack of signed certificates that we could write our names on and take. All this after I had called beforehand to ensure that the test time suited Anam! Of course, I never received any calls about feedback either, so I now have a certificate saying I’ve received 12 hours of make-up training (inaccurate) from Anam Falak (who never bother to double-check that I can apply make-up to her standards, if she even has any).

I was really disappointed by the whole experience. I feel as though I’ve been tricked for my money, and it’s really unfortunate, because I had very high hopes from Anam after reading/hearing amazing reviews. I don’t know if she’s just over the whole classes thing, but it’s sad that she’s not delivering on her high promises.

Re: ANAM's (Anam Falak) Make-up classes: a review

Hi I am sorry to know about your experience. I truly feel for you that you wanted to learn but you couldn't. Anam should take care of her students, 20k might be nothing for her but they could be a lot for others. You should have written this review on her page.

Well as far as I am concerned I did course with Anam few months back in UK. My experience was good but it could be because of the fact that basically I wanted to learn only eye makeup and I did learn it there. There were 20+ girls in our class, she was not rude in answering our questions but she could not deliver how to properly use a foundation, bronzer and blusher. Everyone's face shape is different and you cannot just pick a perfect face with all cuts to teach others, I think it could have been better if she would have done some effort in teaching this part.

She has a carefree attitude and sometimes I found her proud but I think thats because of her fame and level of success she is enjoying. I am not appreciating it but you know people are like that. One more thing which might be irrelevant I have seen people writing on anum's page to remove their pics but she doesn't remove them. This is surely not professionalism.

Other thing she took us to MAC store and told us because she gets 20% or 25% discount so we can buy under her name and pay her rather than paying to the store , she made us feel that she was doing a huge favour on us, which she was but later we found out that MAC actually gives her 33% - 40% discount. We felt pretty bad that she was doing favour on us because she wanted to earn more by our purchases. We wouldn't have felt bad if she wouldn't have lied about a small discount :/

Anyways its hard to catch her and if anyone wants to learn eye makeup only then go for her otherwise I do not recommend and btw her hair course is just CRAP. Save your money.

Re: ANAM's (Anam Falak) Make-up classes: a review

I don't understand the reason to be rude, I have heard this from another person as well. People have paid and enrolled to learn, you are expected to teach, be there, answer questions, provide an accurate assesment, sign the certificates and give each individual time EVEN if it's a 'group' session you have enrolled for. Fellow students won't be able to judge if you have contoured properly or if your foundation is blotchy/patchy or if your lip shade compliments your eyes, they are learning as well! To set an example a MUA should be available before and after class for any furthur queries.

Another thing, at most classes and trainings you are provided with 'basic' make-up and a starters brush set but I have never heard of anyone in Pakistan offer them. We were trained to make individual face-charts for each student (as everyones' features and complexion is different) but you don't get any. Every face can not be contoured in the same way.

Re: ANAM's (Anam Falak) Make-up classes: a review

To answer the bolded part, I did. She deleted the post within half an hour and blocked me (I can only see posts not comment on them). She also photoshopped me out of the picture she took of this class with their certificates, which I thought was very petty and unprofessional.

She actually did provide a set of brushes and an eyeshadow kit, that are okay quality. But you're exactly right about everything else! There were no face charts, and she didn't check anyone's work to see if we actually understood what she was demonstrating.

Re: ANAM's (Anam Falak) Make-up classes: a review

Given she's fairly new (imo) and as far as I know, didn't have any proper formal training, this does not surprise me. Nothing wrong with being self taught but to teach others you really need experience and know your trade inside out as opposed to being a MUA with just a signature look that appeals to select people.

Re: ANAM's (Anam Falak) Make-up classes: a review

well I have never liked her makeup on brides and I can see the pics she puts up are way too edited.
I still wonder why people compare her with names like Bina Khan and Sabs and their quality service.

Re: ANAM's (Anam Falak) Make-up classes: a review

thankyou so much for writing a review it's an eye opener for all the girls who r interested to do a prof course inthis field.i can feel for you.
how is sabs training? anybody hav exp here? they charge 55k

Re: ANAM's (Anam Falak) Make-up classes: a review

AB, it's different when you select a 'one-on-one' class usually you are given more attention and time vs the 'group' class where mirrors are set-up and after a quick demo you are asked to re-create the look.

I haven't met anyone that has done a short/long-course by Sab's put I was extremely put-off when I saw her speed past us and block a car infront of her because the guy was driving 'slow'. She also got off the car and slapped the driver.

how is kashi's? he charges around 40k for a complete course, any reviews?

Re: ANAM's (Anam Falak) Make-up classes: a review

and natasha is charging 35k for 6days for "1 on 1" class

Re: ANAM's (Anam Falak) Make-up classes: a review

AB, you have to ask what the classes cover. Sometimes they aren't clear and 6 days could just be a foundation level where they teach you base, contouring and basic eye-makeup. You need to ask what those 6 days will cover, a one-on-one class is a better option always as you get more time and attention.

I don't know much about the makeup courses they offer but you could email them and ask.

Re: ANAM's (Anam Falak) Make-up classes: a review

I was interested in doing a course with Anam at some point! :(

Re: ANAM's (Anam Falak) Make-up classes: a review

wow, that's pretty rude. But it doesn't come as a surprise. i haven't gone to her personally but a family friend who went to Pakistan had booked her for makeup application for a wedding and her experience was similar to yours. unhelpful and distant. I remember when she had first started, she was selling expensive makeup palettes and a lot of them had the "MAC" logo on them but they were clearly not MAC. I sent her a message about it just inquiring where she gets these palettes from as i have never come across them at the MAC store. I was instantly blocked from her channel.

Re: ANAM's (Anam Falak) Make-up classes: a review

Oh I tell you one thing she edits pictures so much!!!! She uses so much blusher, shining spray and bronzer on her models that they look so fake in short what you see on her page is not what you see in real :)

Re: ANAM's (Anam Falak) Make-up classes: a review

I dont know her in person nor have i taken any classes with her, but I'm member of her group. And I'm no expert either but I have noticed that a lot of her brides mostly have the same kind of makeup and its not always as good as you would notice. Secondly i have noticed that she does have some attitude problem, like she gets all hissy pissy if you Call her studio a salon or her a MUA :s i know she is a med student, but still if someone thinks you are a mua its not th worlds end as she makes it sound :s

you can finds hundreds of makeup artist and gurus with detailed makeup tutorials on youtube. Abd the best part rhey actually suggest and reply to your queries for free. N its always practice that makes you perfect. Attendin a 12 hour session practically cannot make you learn any makeup basics or looks. the only benefit might be the certification you get !

Re: ANAM's (Anam Falak) Make-up classes: a review

You're right about the youtube gurus, but that was the whole point of taking classes: so that a professional could give me individualized advice, according to my facial features. The absence of that is what really pissed me off!

Re: ANAM's (Anam Falak) Make-up classes: a review

I agree to your post somewhat but I'd also like to add that IF you get an honest professional MUA teaching you you will learn things first-hand. Youtube is a great medium to learn but a professional is helping/correcting/assisting you on the side and provide you with expert feedback at the same time.
