An idling car is a devil's workshop.

What is the miles per gallon while idling? Congrats - it is indeed 0. So why do most of us idle our car needlessly. Here are some examples
Warming up the car in winter
Going through a drive-through - fast food banking pharmaceutical car wash coffee etc etc. All of these tasks can be done by going in the store or bank or coffee place.

Idling consumes about 3-7 days worth of annual fuel consumption. Think about that when you idle your car.

Re: An idling car is a devil’s workshop.

^^

Obviously you have not driven in Bangalore. :naraz: In Bangalore it is 15 days worth of monthly fuel consumption. Yesterday it took 1. 5 hours for me to cover a 10 kms stretch.

Re: An idling car is a devil's workshop.

I thought in India they have auto engine turn off during stops. Maybe that applies only to autorickshaws.

I don't understand why you would want to drive Kb Bangalore. Public transportation is the answer Storm.

Re: An idling car is a devil's workshop.

Last mile connectivity is the issue.. Public transportation is not the answer. It is the issue here :)

Re: An idling car is a devil's workshop.

storm if last mile connection is the problem then walking that last mile should take care of it right?

Re: An idling car is a devil's workshop.

What can I say I don't wanna stand in the heat and 117 degrees F.

Re: An idling car is a devil's workshop.

drive-thrus make me so uncomfortable. like i am some lazy glutton sitting in my car, not even willing to get my ass off the seat, while some minions inside the kitchen put together a meal for me. bleh.. i always end up going in. if i am too busy to find time to eat a proper meal, my life is really messed up.

Re: An idling car is a devil's workshop.

I did not understand your post UZ. Most tasks such as banking fast food coffee have two choices - drive through or going in. The standing in the heat option just does not arise.

If one is waiting for someone who has gone inside for banking etc there is a choice to go inside said facility.

And ifcone is stuck waiting outside if possible if there are trees or some public buildings nearby always good to use that option. Idling for the most part is at best justifiable when stuck in traffic. Even then wise to turn off engine if wait > one minute.

Re: An idling car is a devil's workshop.

They say shtflows downstream. As those with access to ac, cars, humvees, all terrain vehicles etc use more of it, folks without these amenities bear the brunt - they don't contribute nearly as much to polluting the earth but bear the consequences of others' outsized polluting habits.

Re: An idling car is a devil’s workshop.

I thought the thread is about people doing bad things in an idle car :rotfl:

Re: An idling car is a devil's workshop.

I am sorry I was talking about picking up kids from school in drive thru lanes, I used to wait for them under the tree near parking lot but it didn't work for me for more than week. Because I cannot wait outside in 115 for 20 to 25 minutes. So what parents were doing including me ,they were waiting inside their cars with air conditions on. It was better if I started using drive thru although it cost me a lot of gas. :(

Re: An idling car is a devil's workshop.

^ in my city, idling is not permitted for more than 3 minutes...:)

why don't you go to school 5 minutes after the school bell so you don't have to wait. save you time and money. i always picked up my nieces N nephews in this manner. :)

Re: An idling car is a devil's workshop.

Drive thrum lanes unless they move fast are big gas guzzlers. It is possible some may have health related issues that prevents waiting outside under actress shade. For others they would set a good example for their kids by undergoing some discomfort for the greater good. While idling does cost a lot of gas it has a greater and permanent cost.

I would think the school would allow parents to wait inside?

And walking home (if school within 3 miles) is an option.

T
we all have choices- pity we make most of them with consideration of our own comfort - I am guilty of same.

Re: An idling car is a devil's workshop.

KKF I try to do that but both of my kids go to two different schools. I pick my little one first so I go late, my house is5 minutes drive from school so I leave exactly when school end but from there I go pick my elder one, I don't have an option here. I have to wait for at least 10 minutes. And I cannot stand in heat. :(

Re: An idling car is a devil's workshop.

Southie no one I mean literally no one stands in heat if parents are not in drive thru they wait inside the car with AC on. But it's only for 3 mnths after that I don't wait in drive thru. June,August and September I had to do that. For parents to wait inside is not an option. Because school has different time for high school and different time for middle school.

Re: An idling car is a devil's workshop.

UZ you are a good sport. Just one point- many times someone needs to show the way. If there are no specific health reasons then it isnmy hope people will make different choices.

In my grandfathers days walking with an umbrella on a hot day was cool (pun intended). I am hoping you would find ways out of this idling pattern (3 months).

Nice chatting with you. Hope I did not come across too aggressive.

Re: An idling car is a devil's workshop.

what does idling even mean?

As in standing still?

Re: An idling car is a devil's workshop.

When your car is stuck in traffic (or not moving) with engine running it is said to be idling. I read recently when the engine idles the fuel burns less completely. So pedestrians or schhol kids and especially children who are close to tailpipe get affected more.

Re: An idling car is a devil's workshop.

No you were not aggressive at all, we are just discussing.;)

Re: An idling car is a devil's workshop.

10 mins? mm come on UZ. people stand in the hot sun all day and farm. you can't stand 10 mins in the shade?
