Intelligentsia condemns threat to Asma Jahangir

LAHORE, June 4: Intellectuals, lawyers, academics, writers and civil society activists from all over the country on Monday expressed grave concern over a serious life threat to the leading rights activist and lawyer, Ms Asma Jahangir.

In a joint statement issued by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) on Monday, they said a highly credible source had revealed about serious life threat to Ms Jahangir these days.

“What makes the reported conspiracy to liquidate Asma Jahangir especially serious is, firstly, the environment of target-killings in which dissident persons’ dead bodies are being dumped all over, and, secondly, the fact that the finger of accusation has been pointed at the extraordinarily privileged state actors,” the statement signed by Justice (retired) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim, Supreme Court Bar Association president Yasin Azad, former finance minister Dr Mubashir Hasan, Pakistan Bar Council president Akhtar Hussain, former Supreme Court Bar Association president Ali Ahmed Kurd and others said.

Condemning the act to threaten Ms Jahangir, they made it clear to the all concerned, especially those who preside over the security apparatus, to must not underestimate the consequences of any harm caused to the life of Ms Jahangir.

“This is not a conspiracy against one individual alone, as it is obviously a plot against Pakistan’s future as a democratic state, in which the threat to Asma may be only one, though crucial, part,” they warned.

While condemning the act to threaten the former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association and chairperson of the HRCP, they said:
“What the duty of the state in this matter is and how the civil society must face the challenge thrown to it need no elaboration.”

Our Correspondent in New York adds: A spokesman for the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, said on Monday that any threats to the life of Asma Jahangir, UN’s special rapporteur, would be ‘unacceptable’, adds Masood Haider from New York.

Responding to questions at the daily briefing on the reported death threats by a terrorist group against Ms Jahangir, the spokesman said although the UN chief was on way to New York from Saudi Arabia, any such threats to her life were reprehensible.

He said the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva would also issue a detailed statement.

Re: Agencies want to kill me: Asma Jahangir

Very happy to see reaction of journalists, politicians, lawyers etc. Agencies need to stop threatening anyone who they disagree with.

Asma has done lot of good work, even if she is controversial at times you can't just threaten her because you have some power.

I hope all Pakistanis unite against this aggression from these thugs.

Re: Agencies want to kill me: Asma Jahangir

Although I do not always agree with what she says but she is one of very few who openly criticize on Pakistani agencies (Army) for things she does not like and of course that does not go well with the agencies.

Here is another problem now. Even if the agencies were not planning to do any such thing, its should be now their duty to protect her as anyone can kill her now and blame will go squarely on agencies.

Generals starting to have wet dreams again?
not this time, mark my words - I don't want to see GHQ burnt to ground.

Asma Jahangir: ISI is trying to kill me

I won’t be surprised if she ends up being murdered by ISI.

Pakistan Lawyer Asma Jahangir Says The ISI Is Plotting To Assassinate Her | World News | Sky News

Alex Rossi, Asia correspondent
One of Pakistan’s leading human rights activists has told Sky News she fears for her life after receiving information from a “credible source” that she is being targeted for assassination.

Asma Jahangir believes Pakistan’s security bureau - the Inter Services Intelligence Agency (ISI) - is behind the plot.

The respected and well known lawyer, who works to prevent the persecution of women and religious minorities, said: "I received an information leak that an assassination was sanctioned and planned.

“I was made aware that my travel plans had been under surveillance for some time. It is very obvious to me that it would be the ISI pulling the strings.”

Ms Jahangir’s work as a human rights activist - which has included defending people from Pakistan’s strict blasphemy laws - has frequently seen her targeted by religious extremists.

But she says this latest alleged plot, which she believes has been hatched at the “highest level of state agencies”, may be as a result of her work in one of Pakistan’s unruly provinces.

It is possible intelligence chiefs have been angered by her mission to highlight human rights violations by security forces in restive Baluchistan.

Ms Jahangir also recently defended Pakistan’s controversial former ambassador to the United States, Husain Haqqani.

He was accused of being behind a mysterious memo, sent to the Obama administration, asking for help to prevent a military coup after the killing of Osama Bin Laden in May last year.

Human rights activists, lawyers and journalists are frequently murdered in Pakistan - especially when their investigations or work impinges on the interests of powerful groups.

Asma Jahangir did consider leaving the country when she heard about the alleged plans for the “murderous attack” but has decided it is not an option.

“I have seen more frightening times than this. Unfortunately we get numb to the signs of danger in Pakistan because we see so much of it around us,” she said.

International human rights groups have condemned the alleged assassination plot. Human Rights Watch has demanded a full investigation.

Its director in Pakistan, Ali Dayan Hasan, said: "Pakistani authorities should urgently and thoroughly investigate the alleged plot … and hold all those responsible to account.

Former Pakistani prime minister Benazir Bhutto in Rawalpindi before her murder on December 27, 2007.

There are allegations the authorities were involved in Benazir Bhutto’s murder

“A threat against Jahangir is a threat to all those in Pakistan who struggle for human rights and the rule of law.”

The ISI and figures within Pakistan’s powerful military have been accused before of being involved in high profile killings.

In April 2010, a UN report into the 2007 assassination of prime minister Benazir Bhutto, concluded that the Pakistani authorities failed to provide her with adequate security and went on to say that elements within the military may have played a role in her murder.

The report was also critical of the “pervasive role” played by the ISI in the events leading up to her killing.

re: An article about Army and Asma Jahangir

what a piece of crap you have written. Now can you bother to reply what the hell so-called Army achieve in last 65+ years apart from “apne hi mulk ko fatah karney k ilawa” ?
Better learn some “tameez” before referring to others for example you are calling Asma Jahagir as “uss ko” it should be “un ko”.

rest of the article is not worth commenting on, carry on !

re: An article about Army and Asma Jahangir

^ what has asma jahangir given to Pakistan, btw?

re: An article about Army and Asma Jahangir

regardless what she do or didn’t, so-called journalist should follow some basic standards :chai:

re: An article about Army and Asma Jahangir

I dont see why the intelligence would want to kill her, she is not that important. Pakistan is under a lot of pressure at present (mostly due to the follies of the army) and many countries want to take advantage of the situation, in these circumstances this is a very dangerous statement. The law and order situation is such that the sitting government cannot protect its governor and minister, if God forbade something happens to her (by xyz) she has already launched a FIR against the army. May Allah protect us and give aqal to the government/military and all the stake holders.

Re: Asma Jahangir: ISI is trying to kill me

Asma Jahangir is corrupt and this is just a cheap publicity stunt by her.

re: An article about Army and Asma Jahangir

Can I have three minutes of my life back?

Re: Asma Jahangir: ISI is trying to kill me

she had the courage to speak against ISI, they might do kill her and make it look like it was an accident and or someone else was trying to harm her, but since she has loud and clear said it, that, its ISI who wants her dead, if anything happens to her, it wouldnt be difficult to know who was behind it, I just fail to understand why does ISI loves to play these games, why do they feel threaten by every journalist/lawyer/activists who speaks against them.

re: An article about Army and Asma Jahangir

Well said :k:
