This morning's speech by Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, indicates the authorities' readiness to launch violent crackdowns if people continue to protest which may cause a widespread loss of life, Amnesty International said today.

Hassiba Hadj Sahraoui, Deputy Director of the Middle East and North Africa Programme, said:
'We are extremely disturbed at statements made by Ayatollah Khamenei which seem to give the green light to security forces to violently handle protesters exercising their right to demonstrate and express their views.
*‘If large numbers of people take to the street in protests in the next couple of days, we fear that they will face arbitrary arrest and excessive use of force, as has happened in recent days, particularly as permission for a demonstration to be held in Tehran on Saturday 20 June has been denied.’
*

‘For a Head of State to put the onus of security on peaceful demonstrators and not on the security forces is a gross dereliction of duty and a licence for abuse.’
In a televised address to the nation during Friday prayers in Tehran, Ayatollah Khamenei called for an end to street protests against the outcome of the election. Instead of warning security forces, including the volunteer Basij militia, to act with restraint and in accordance with the law, he said that if people continued to take to the streets, the consequences would lie with them.
Peaceful assembly is expressly permitted under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to which Iran is a state party. Law enforcement officials must use force only when strictly necessary and to the extent required for the performance of their duty. They must not use firearms unless strictly unavoidable and in order to protect life. Law enforcement personnel must exercise restraint, minimise damage or injury and respect and preserve human life.

Re: Amnesty International: : Khamenei's speech gives legitimacy to police brutality

It's more alarming to see that USA is taking so much interest in it.

Actually the EU has played far more of a public role in this than the U.S. has. With the history between Iran and the U.S. what type of interest level would you expect? And it's sad you find it more alarming that the U.S. has interest in how this plays out rather than the Muslims being arrested, beaten, and killed for peacefull protesting.

it's better to be killed by iranians than the US forces.

Actually it is disappointing that USA has NOT taken a much more active role in this. All they have done is make some vague statements.

USA should be rasing he** through all channels - diplomatic, political, trade, international agencies as well as overt & covert intelligence means to ensure that justice is restored in Iran and ahmedinejad should not be allowed to steal the power so brazenly.

If the ayotollas support such stealing they should be thrown out too

how do you feel about Pakistani's getting killed by Pakistani taleban? is that ok too, going by your logic? Should USA stop supporting Pakistan army in fighting the Taleban?

I post an article about Khamenei publically green lighting violence against protesters and you make the claim stating "It's better to be killed by Iranians than U.S. forces". You realize the U.S. isn't attacking any protesters in Iran, right? What's your thought process in making such a random statement?

Re: Amnesty International: : Khamenei’s speech gives legitimacy to police brutality

Mr. Mousavi has recently turned a ‘reformist’ himself and it is evident what caused that U-turn. Its easy to be misled believing one side of the story. Although, aljazeera is itself a biased sources, but this interview is, in my opinion, balanced:

Al Jazeera English - Middle East - Iranian writer on poll result

The attention must be kept on the people of Iran who are protesting against their corrupt government rather than moved towards a reaction of the U.S. hence the muted response. The Iranian heads would love nothing more than a U.S. distraction and would use it against the protesters. By not giving them this distraction it has exposed them more than ever before for what they truly are.

And while Khamenei has said protesters will be “held responsible” if rallies continue, Khamenei and the corrupt government of Iran will be held responsible for what happens to the protesters by the international community.

Re: Amnesty International: : Khamenei's speech gives legitimacy to police brutality

^ good point. I didn't think of that

Re: Amnesty International: : Khamenei's speech gives legitimacy to police brutality

Why didn't they raise their voices when USA was friend with Iran?

Re: Amnesty International: : Khamenei's speech gives legitimacy to police brutality

7 ppl got killed and u call it peace ful, lol

and what abt that poor guy who got killed by a British police officer during the G8 summit. he was not even protesting.

lol, corrupt

if you talk abt corruption then Italian and Russian govts tops the list, fix them 1st please.

Re: Amnesty International: : Khamenei’s speech gives legitimacy to police brutality

I find this video very relevant.

Khamenei has not acted like a dictator until now, as per NPR. Only right wing Zionists think otherwise.

:) I was thinking about iRan all along!

yea i would appreciate them stopping with their drone attacks , ratio of 1 suspect to 45 civilians.

what utter rubbish. From someone who actually lsitened to the speech live, this thread is utter distortion and generaly flaming.

Im not sure what you've been listening to, but Ayatullah Khamenei actually did warn the basijis that they will be held accountablefor any unlawful killing, there is actually an investigation going on over the tehrani uni killings.

secondly, the rioters have taken to burning buildings and cars, and putting people's lives at risk. They have not been peacful protest by any means.

The onus is on the rioters, and protesters, and the party leaders who encourage this beahviour. There is a legal way, use it.

From first hand witnesses, a group of student protesters who refused to sit thier exams, decided to attack another group of students who were actually sitting thier exams. Their exams were torn apart mid way and the exam sitting students were attacked. It wasnt until security was called in, and the mob arrested, did the issue settle down. That part was not reported however, apparently according to western media, the police entered tehran uni and attacked 'innocent' students.

The distortion is unbelievable;

Time has come for Khamerni & shameeni ..to pack their bags.. and get lost from Iran once for all !

So-called religious fundamentalist idiots with narrow minded vision of 9th century has no place in todays world.

Down with Khameeni & Shameeni … all of the education & young people of Iran is on streets… . :k:

Thanks for this.

Iran needs a very strong strategy on how to tackle this media war and brainwashing that West has started against them.
