Amma abba and ami Abu

What’s the difference if any between amma abba and ami abu ?

In in english for example mother is formal, mom/mum is more casual and mommy/mummy tends to be what young children would use.

Is there a similar distinction between these urdu ways of referring to parents? Is one more commonly used by urdu speaking people, punjabis etc?

Re: Amma abba and ami Abu

Amma and Abba are less formal...

Re: Amma abba and ami Abu

I think both Amma/Abba and Ammi/Abu are more casual and are used interchangeably. When one goes formal then they start using Walid for Father and Walida for Mother!

Re: Amma abba and ami Abu

I use word Ammi / Abu. BTW calling Aba AmaaN looks rude

Re: Amma abba and ami Abu

Why rude? I think it just depends on what you started calling them when you were a kid.

Re: Amma abba and ami Abu

I dunno know but saying AmaaN Aap ka kia haal hay or Ammi aap ka kia haal Hay feels different or may be its only for me.

Re: Amma abba and ami Abu

It is for you because you are not used to it. I've heard all my elders call their parents amma abba and all of my generation kids call their parents ammi abbu and the next generation kids calling their parents both depending on their mood in my family. All of it feels normal.

Re: Amma abba and ami Abu

Now they use Baba and Mama

Re: Amma abba and ami Abu

They use ammi abbu, amma abba, ammo, baba mama. Mom dad and mummy daddy rehta hai abhi :hehe:

Re: Amma abba and ami Abu

Mummy Dad were used in 70’s 80’s

Re: Amma abba and ami Abu

My mom and I were talking about this a couple days ago. I have a cousin whose kids call her "maa"...which I think think is sweet, but my mom finds lacking in respect. I have another cousin whose kids call her amma and I have never liked that title, but my mom thinks amma is more respectful than maa.

Re: Amma abba and ami Abu

@redvelvet This is purely personal feelings. I personally don't like Amma Abba, Maa, ammi abbu, but Baba and Mama are likeable.

Re: Amma abba and ami Abu

I like Baba as well. I call my parents mama and papa. We use ammi ...specifically bari ammi for dadi and nani...and Abu Ji for my dada.

Re: Amma abba and ami Abu

I use Amma and Abba, I've never called my parents anything else.. Baba makes me think of an elephant so I'd feel funny using that..

Amma abba and ami Abu

I called my father, Dad

My mum, i call her mum, mama, mummy, amma, maa. Im kinda like stewie from family guy. Growing up though it was mainly mum

I love mama and baba i think i would want my kids to call us that.

Re: Amma abba and ami Abu

I call then Mama and Baba

Re: Amma abba and ami Abu

My mum and dad call their parents ami/abbaji and maa/abba.

Sometimes my dad even calls my grandad “Pyoh” :smack:

I personally just call my parents Dad and and Ammi.

Re: Amma abba and ami Abu

What about those that say 'Maama' 'Baaba'

Re: Amma abba and ami Abu

My kids call me Baba and i totally love it. Maire bachpan sai hee yee khoish thee k mairey bachey mujhye BABA boleen :D

Re: Amma abba and ami Abu

Yeah, that's cute when kids use Mama Baba, but what about fully grown up adults that still call their parents Mama Baba. I find it a bit strange tbh
