Amir Sohail - kub sudhre gaa!/ PCB Warns feuding quartet

Sohail v Miandad: end the not-so-civil war](http://uk.cricinfo.com/db/ARCHIVE/CRICKET_NEWS/2003/NOV/001929_PAK_12NOV2003.html)

One positive that arose from Pakistan’s disappointing showing at the 2003 World Cup 2003, was that Javed Miandad then returned to the fold. His appointment to coach the young blood injected much-needed energy and enthusiasm into the team. In Pakistan you often hear comments to the effect that Pakistan cricket is always safer when it is in the hands of Javed. He is the undisputed king of cricket in Pakistan – which leads some other leading personalities to be wary, even jealous, of him.

And now one of those who made his debut under Javed Miandad’s captaincy is going out of his way to criticise his mentor. Aamer Sohail was given a great honour when he was appointed Pakistan’s chairman of selectors, in what was a well-intentioned move to show how keen Lt-Gen. Tauqir Zia, the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman, was to get the country’s cricket back on track. Sohail, who is also a TV commentator, must have impressed the PCB bigwigs with his insight on the game.

However, Sohail has crossed the fine line between being proactive and being dictatorial, by ignoring – or not even bothering to seek – advice from a man whose knowledge of the game, and the players he is coaching, is second to none.

Javed Miandad always was a master tactician, and presumably he felt at first that it had been agreed that he would not be involved in selection, and the selectors wouldn’t get involved in coaching. This approach was long-overdue in Pakistan cricket – but it only works if the personalities are compatible. Ignoring the chance of consultation with a person like Javed is simply undesirable, especially when the team is being rebuilt.

Nevertheless Sohail started publicly criticising the performance of the coach, using his TV commentary as a platform. And now, in unilaterally announcing a 22-man list of probables for the five-match one-day series against New Zealand, he has managed to upset not only the coach but also the captain, the PCB chief executive, and his fellow selectors. This lack of consultation has resulted in a media outcry, and a sea of statements and counter-statements – just when Pakistan cricket was on the way up.

It’s high time that these matters were set straight. Aamer Sohail, as the chief selector, has a duty to provide the coach with the best available squad. They should already be almost the finished articles, just like the Aussies or the Indians, ready for the coach to apply the final polish and teach them the rigours and strategies of international cricket.

International cricket remains the ultimate forum, and to think or even express on television that someone should be taught cricket at that level by the coach or captain is living in a fool’s paradise. No coach can go out and play, no matter how great a player he might have been. It’s the player who has to go out and perform: the coach can only spruce up the 90-95% players and make achieve 110% or more.

But during his tenure Sohail has selected a number of average – and even below-average players – who were found lacking in the international arena. There you don’t have time for learning the basics, you are playing for your nation and the people want to see you perform, not watch you taking an exam in front of the TV cameras.

Recently Pakistan have given caps to youngsters like Yasir Ali, Faisal Iqbal, Farhan Adil and Junaid Zia, who have all struggled. A player like Mohammad Hafeez, who has serious technical flaws, has been given a long run in the side too. That’s not Hafeez’s fault – the fault lies with the selectors who chose him before he was ready.

This latest squabble over the unwarranted criticism of the coach will take its toll on the young team’s morale, just when important new challenges lie ahead, like the long-awaited arrival of the Indian team and the Asia Cup. If Aamer Sohail feels that he can somehow overshadow the legacy of Javed Miandad he must wake up and face the truth – his credentials do not match.

Chief selector has crucial meeting with Tauqir

By Waheed Khan

KARACHI: Chief selector Aamer Sohail has every chance of emerging in a stronger position after a crucial meeting called by the Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Lt. General Tauqir Zia this week to sort out problems between him and the Pakistan team management.

‘The News’ has learnt that for one Sohail has already gained ground despite his latest row with Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul-Haq and coach Javed Miandad.

“Their insistence on having Moin Khan invited for the training camp set up for the series against New Zealand has confirmed Sohail’s argument before the Chairman that they were just interested in his recall and have no problems with the other players invited for the camp,” a Board insider said.

He said plus selectors Saleem Yousuf and Shoaib Muhammad had also not come across in a very positive light after initially grumbling to Chief Executive Rameez Raja that Sohail had not consulted them while finalizing the 22 players.

“When Rameez spoke to Sohail about it he was told that the two were invited regularly for selection committee meetings in Lahore but either didn’t bother to turn up and even if they did they hardly spent much time in the meetings and took little interest,” the insider said.

He said even to finalize the pool of 22 players Sohail had not only invited the fifth selector Farukh Zaman from Peshawar who attended a meeting in but had also been conveyed to Yousuf and Shoaib but they didn’t show up.

“Sohail has also taken the stand that the PCB has laid down clear charter of duties for everyone and according to it the chief selector and selection committee is not bound to discuss things with the Pakistan captain or coach while finalizing players for a training camp or even a one-day or Test squad,” the insider disclosed.

“Sohail has argued that under the charter of duties the captain has complete authority to pick the playing eleven from the squad given to him by the selectors and the selectors have never interfered in his domain.”

Similarly Sohail has given several examples of how he had accommodated the views of Inzamam and Miandad when even drawing up camp probables or team squads in the recent past. The insider said that Tauqir Zia had spoken to Sohail on Sunday and heard out his arguments but than told him to accommodate Moin for the time being in the camp and he would sort out the matter after he returned on Monday from abroad.

Sohail it seems is not a big supporter of Moin and didn’t even want him for the test series against South Africa but relented on the insistence of the team captain and coach after Rashid Latif had pulled out of the two tests.

“Sohail’s lack of confidence in Moin was vindicated after his shoddy keeping in the tests against South Africa and he had informed Inzamam and Miandad in advance that he would rather give the young wicket-keeper Kamran Akmal a chance than take another risk with Moin against New Zealand,” the insider informed.

According to him the reasons were obvious for Inzamam and Miandad insisting on Moin as they realized that Kamran was a risky proposition and if he didn’t deliver as wicket-keeper the selectors would have no option but to recall Rashid for the tour to New Zealand in December.

“Inzi and Miandad are reluctant to have Rashid in the team as he carries a lot of weight with the other players and in his presence these two tend to be overshadowed. Rashid takes centre stage. Plus being a no-nonsense character he is used to calling a spade a spade and going out his way to stand up for the younger players and no one likes this,” the insider said.

He disclosed that Miandad was not happy with Rashid as he blamed him for not supporting and encouraging his nephew Faisal Iqbal as much as he did with the other new players when he was captain.

“The tragedy is that Pakistan’s wicket-keeper is out in the cold because the team management is not comfortable with his presence in the team. The chief selector has had several run-ins with him over selection matters and the Chairman of the Board is not willing to back him again as he believes in Rashid’s presence player power will only grow,” the insider observed. The one man who has backed Rashid completely is Rameez but in the present circumstances the insider said he is bidding his time and hoping that the selectors and team management would be forced to recall Rashid soon as the other wicket-keepers go on trial and the difference between them and Rashid becomes obvious.

As it happened recently when Moin kept wickets against South Africa and when Kamran played in the five one-dayers against Bangladesh.

This is getting worse. I have a feeling someone is going to be fired. I just hope its not Javed Miandad.

something is bound to blow up... and it looks like sohail is going to continue this as he is apparently in a position of strength for some off reason...

Did Tauqir Zia have the meeting with Aamir Sohail yet?

They have to rid of this monkey. He is a virus on that team. I don't think its fair for the senior players who give their all to the team and then are dropped and played games with by this prick. I don't remember any other team having so many changes. It seems like the only consistent person on the Pakistan team is Yousuf Youhana and Mohammad Sami. Otherwise ever player has been dropped and re-instated. How is this team going to be able to face the Australians when you are rotating a new circle of players every 2months.

The fixtures on this team should be a couple of players, the core, whose leadership and experience the younger guys can depend on.

Yasir Hameed
Inzimam Ul Haq
Younis Khan
Yousuf Youhana
Abdul Razzaq
Shoaib Malik
Shoaib Akhter
Mohammad Sami

Younger players like Misba Ul Haq, Taufeeq Umer, Imran Nazir, Imran Farhat, Shahid Afridi, Mohammad Hafeez, Umer Gul should be looked as the next batch.

Personally i think these teams needs shahid afridi because at his age he is one of the veterans on the team. Also under Javed Miandad, Afridi was shapping up.

Dropped Latif too joins the selection row

PTI WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 2003 04:05:07 PM ]

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s former captain Rashid Latif, ignored for the one-day series against New Zealand, has also jumped in to the selection row saying the team will not have the right balance without either Muhammad Hafeez or Shahid Afridi. “I feel that the Pakistan team management should make efforts to convince the selectors to have one of these two in the team for the New Zealand series,” Latif was quoted as saying in The News on Wednesday. Latif said it was also a mistake to ignore someone as experienced as Younis Khan in the middle order for the five-match one-day series beginning on November 22. “After the World Cup the main reason we did well was because the inclusion of Muhammad Hafeez allowed us the luxury of a sixth bowler and the fact that Younis and Yousuf Youhana beefed-up the batting with their experience,” Latif said. Latif, who led Pakistan after the World Cup in the rebuilding process before opting out of the series against South Africa, said he was surprised that captain Inzamamul Haq and coach Javed Miandad had insisted on the inclusion of Moin Khan in the training camp but not these three players – Afridi, Younis and Hafeez. “I was a bit surprised because I thought they would ask the selectors to undo this mistake,” Latif said. Latif, who was ignored by the selectors despite the fact that he had made himself available for the New Zealand series, also said reports that he was going to retire from international cricket were unfounded. “These are baseless stories and I don’t know from where they are coming. I have no intentions of retiring as yet and I don’t think my performances since the World Cup mean that I can’t play for Pakistan again.”

OK, Ehsan bhai, I will agree with you. May be I was big fan of Aamir's style and fearless and aggressive batting, so rated him above Majid.
[/QUOTE]

1) sissyyysmooth_guy...Ehsan is not going to ban you from the forum...I have also seen Majid playing..and i must say he was just an ordinary batsman..nothing special..only hype...and his atitude was worse than Aamir..Majid is an extremely obnoxious/rude person..just like Aamir

There was no class in Majid batting..Sadiq Mohd was much better than his partner..

Similarly Aamir had the wrost batting tech...fearless is one thing--our Afridi was also fearless..but both of them sux...the only significant inning that Aamir ever played was in England...
The only decent opener we ever had was Saeed...period.

Interesting to note that Rashid is backing Afridi. I think we are about to have a better relying opening pair in two of the four: Imran Farhat, Salman Butt, Yasir Hameed, Taufeeq Umer. We don't really need Afridi or Hafeez unless they have performed excellent domestically to earn their cap back.

It is a sad affair when you read the articles above and all the negatives spread about Rashid Latif. Like he wasn't included because he stands up for young players and how he came to blows with Miandad concerning Faisal Iqbal.
The only sane person in the Pakistani management is Ramiz Raja, who holds no grudges against any players.

I don't like Amir Sohail

I like Miandad.

BUT

If Miandad is not following the rules laid out by PCB charter and if he is trying to play "I am full of experience so u better listen to me" then he needs to be sidelined ASAP. Such attitude is not good for Pakistan Cricket.

We need to realize no manager, coach, player is above cricket.

It is sad to read all this, but then how much of this is true and how much is just rumour, no one knows. That there is problems amongst different people in the cricket circles is quite clear, however it is upto Zia who should take a firm stand and resolve the issues and instill some discpline amongst these people. This state of affairs cannot continue for much longer.

This is one big mess, and whatever happens out of it will not be good.

And it gets worse :smack2:

Cricket row simmers as coach, skipper lambast Sohail for creating unrest

"KARACHI: The ongoing row between the Pakistan captain and coach with the chief selector has taken a serious turn with Inzamam-ul-Haq and Javed Miandad accusing Aamer Sohail of telling lies and trying to spread unrest in the team.

Although on surface the row that erupted last Friday with the announcement of 22 players for the one-day series against New Zealand appeared to be over the selection issue and personal ego clashes over authority matters, but ‘The News’ has learnt that the matter is much more serious.

“Three incidents in recent times have led to the escalation of the row between Inzamam, Miandad with Sohail and clearly the Chairman of the Board is not going to find it easy to cool down things this time in a clear the air meeting which the chief executive has planned for Thursday,” a well informed source in the board disclosed.

He informed that Inzamam, in fact, had during a telephone conversation with Rameez Raja told him in blunt words that if he came face to face with Sohail he will find it hard to contain his anger.

The reason for this anger is that Inzamam had spoken to Sohail about the probables for the New Zealand series and the chief selector promised to release the names after final consultation with him,” the source said.

“Inzamam had gone for three days on a ‘tableeghi’ tour and when he came back he learnt that the names had been announced. When the story broke in the press about Sohail announcing the names without consulting the captain and coach and even some of his fellow selectors, and the pressure grew on him,** Aamer Sohail called up Inzamam and told him to say in the press that he (Sohail) had consulted him before announcing the names.”

“But Inzamam refused to accept this on which Sohail misbehaved with him on the telephone and banged the phone,” the source narrated.**

He said that after this incident Inzamam had been very upset with Sohail and decided to take him square on and conveyed this to Rameez also.

According to the source the problems between Sohail and the captain and coach also soured recently when** Inzamam confronted Miandad and asked him if he had been telling Shoaib Akhtar that he could make him the next captain.

“When Shoaib was asked by Inzi and Miandad about the matter he disclosed that in fact Sohail had told him he should prepare for the captaincy,” the source said.**

He said that in some other cases also it had come to the notice of the captain and coach that the chief selector had spread rumours in the team and when the concerned players were asked about it, the truth came out. “Inzamam and Miandad now believe that Sohail wants them out and has been trying to create distrust and unrest in the team by spreading false rumours. And they have made up their mind to confront the chief selector with all this when they come face to face with him in front of the Chairman,” the source disclosed.

The two were also not happy that Sohail had been trying to interfere in team affairs by trying to talk to the players directly on technical and other issues.

**“During the prize distribution ceremony after the Faisalabad Test against South Africa, Sohail openly scolded Yasir Hameed for playing a rash stroke and asked him rudely if he thought he was Don Bradman. ** To this, Inzamam told Sohail he should not be speaking to any player in this tone and if he had any complaints he should speak to the captain and coach who were responsible for the team and players,” the source added.

The interesting thing is that former captain Rashid Latif also eventually stepped down as captain after having problems with Sohail on similar issues which had culminated in Rashid letting Sohail have his piece of mind in a meeting in Multan during the Bangladesh series.

“Miandad had told Rameez that obviously there is something wrong with the chief selector’s attitude when he can’t get along with anyone and that this time he is not willing to sit back and watch the chief selector destroy the team on his own personal whims and fancies,” the source said.

**“Miandad also told Rameez about how Sohail had also made negative and snide remarks about him to some foreign commentators during the recent series against South Africa and they had in turn asked him what the problem was between the two?” **the source stated.

“Miandad also conveyed that he suspected the selectors kept on changing players to make things harder for him,” he added.

In this sort of background, clearly Chairman Tauqir Zia has his work cut out for him when he meets the captain, coach and chief selector on Thursday.

When contacted Rameez admitted that this time the matter was a serious one and there had been serious complaints about Sohail’s behaviour.

“The Chairman has not slotted a meeting so far with all of them on Thursday, but I will see to it this happens and this matter is sorted out because it is causing irreparable damage to Pakistan cricket and is huge cause for concern,” Rameez said.

Sohail for his part denies all the above accusations and has told Board officials that Inzamam and Miandad have been trying to oust him because he is not willing to accommodate their unjust views on selection matters.

The source said that Miandad had also conveyed to the chief executive that he would not allow the chief selector to insult him any longer and drew his attention to the statement of Sohail in which** he had taken a personal dig at Miandad by claiming he was being paid for his work while he (Sohail) was working on an honorary basis.**

PCB ask Miandad, Sohail to explain position on tirade in press

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday issued notices to Pakistan coach Javed Miandad and chief selector Aamer Sohail asking them to explain their recent conduct and statements against each other in the national and international press.

The notices were delivered to both the former Test captains by chief executive Rameez Raja who said that the escalating fued between the Pakistan captain, coach and the chief selector had damaged the image of Pakistan cricket.

Miandad and Sohail have been asked to explain their statements against each other and have been reminded in strong words that both come under the Board’s code of conduct and are not supposed to give statements against each other or speak on contentious issues.

The two have also been told by Rameez that if they have any problems over selection or related team matters they are not supposed to speak in the press but approach the Chairman and CEO and have the matter sorted out.

The row between Miandad and Sohail escalated last Friday when the chief selector announced a pool of 22 players for the one-day series against New Zealand without consulting the captain or coach.

Although Sohail later relented and included Moin Khan in the camp on the insistence of captain Inzamam-ul-Haq, the round of statements against each other have continued unabated since then in the press.

Rameez said this was a matter of concern for the Board and it would take steps to ensure such things didn’t occur in future. Rameez also spoke to Inzamam verbally on Wednesday on the ongoing row and asked him to refrain from giving statements in the press on selection matters.

I feel that If Sohail is made to leave his coaching spot, he wont be able to continue his commentry. If he doesnt, rest assured that whoever listens to his fumed commentry will have his money worth :D

Thats right, no one knows the truth in the stories and links posted here but Sohail's stubborn attitude has been witnessed by many while commentating. Miandad's whinny nature is also not a hidden knowledge so ideally both of them or one of them has to be flexible.

why does everyone pick on Sohail? Yes, he is too fiery for his own good and is a very difficult person. But then so is Miandad.

I reckon if Miandad was locked up in one room all by himself, he would find a reason to argue with himself. The man can't even manage to get along with his own shadow and the PCB's made him the coach - a position that requires superb man-management skills. I read an artcicle by John Buchanan and it was incredible how much emphasis he placed on having good one-on-one relationships with his players.

Contrast that with Miandad - he had problems with Latif (who for all his faults is still a very straight and honest person) just because Latif would not support his untalented nephew.

Latif is not allowed back into the team solely for this reason despite him being much, much superior to Moin as a keeper. Latif became a martyr during the mid to late nineties. Finally, things changed for the guy. But once again the authorities have managed to make him a scapegoat for crimes he has not comitted.

If anyone should be kicked out, Miandad should be the first, followed closely by Aamir Sohail.

Sambs, yes i strongly agree that Miandad should start behaving as well. But the fact remains that he is no doubt a dedicated and skilled coach who works hard with players and if one has to choose between Sohail's selectorial skills and Miandad's coachin skills , i will pick Miandad anyday anytime.

And yes This whole matter has highlighted the fact that Rashid shouldnt have been the man who left and inzimam now realizes how irritated Rashid must have been when he resigned. Ramiz should have intervened then and this meeting which is goign to be held now, should have been held when Rashid was holding the charges.

Out of everyone, Rameez seems to be the only sensible guy. I agree with Saby on this, if anyone must go, it should be Sohail not Miandad. Yes, Miandad also needs to get his act straight but Sohail has been acting absoultly childish ever since he got this position. Sohail wants all the power to himself. Until Sohail doesnt go, Pakistan Cricket will remain in shambles. I think its about General Zia tell Sohail to pack up his bags and leave and let everyone involved in PCB take a sigh of relief.

Saby bhai,

in normal circumstances or if this was the first time, I would have supported Miandad too. But this has been going on for too long. He has problems with Imran, the whole ninties team, Rashid, Sohail. That is a lot of people. On top of that, it's not going to be long before Inzi and him have a lovemaking session too. I've had enough of him and instability. I will be happy if he gets kicked out. Even that Saffie dude was better than Miandad, at least he could get along with people.

About Latif: I used to be such a big fan of his but his recent antics like the letter to the ICC really turned him off. But the recent happenings have reminded me why I became a fan of Latif's at all. Even if he kept poorly against the Saffies in the ODI series for whatever personal reasons, he had the guts and integrity to step out of the team. He did not hold the team and its success for ransom. I don't think the same can be said of anyone of the present team management.
