Reading a book written by a Gujrati Memon. He mentioned that there are some peculiar types of traditions followed in community related to spending money on others.
So a Memon married outside community (which is a rare exception). After sometime, the bride went for shopping with MIL, DILs , etc . They had chaat at market which was paid by the bride. When the came back home, every lady paid the bride for the plate of chaat they had at market. Bride was totally surprised.
During college days, we used to have lunch together. First, the group was small 2-3 persons, so sometimes person A used to pay the bill and next time person B. when group grew larger, I heard someone saying 'aaj American system se khate hain'. I didn't know what does that mean. Later knew that it refers to equal contribution per head.
So which style do you follow? Memoni or American (They seems quite similar BTW).
We are also do the same thing. Especially while going for some trip. We says American System. So every one will pay. But later i came to know its Islamic System that whenever you are going on trip etc. You will appoint someone as Ameer and will keep some equal amount to him for expenditure and on return he will give you all the balance amount if there is.
TableeGhii Jamaa'at does that. everyone pays their share but they collect money after the Jamaa'at returns from their trip. they eat the very basic food and the bill is quite nominal.

i've gone within the city and to other cities with them on several occasions both in India and in Canada. the ameer of Indian chapter of TableeGhii Jamaa'at was my Urdu teacher. AligaRh Muslim University is one of the THE major centers of tableeGh in India. i went to Ottawa and Montreal with them in Canada.
