a lot of institutions have work study programs-- they find work for u and u have time to study,
the jobs u get through work study depend on ur degree too

u know i think the best thing for u to do is look around for colleges
find a few that interest u and apply-- deadlines will be like feb march so u should get going, u have just enough time
see what kind of things they offer u
most univs in us like international students, and im assuming u come from a desi background and minority status is usually a plus
depending on ur grades and such u could get pretty good scholarships, just do some research and it should be good
and if u want to reduce cost of living ---- find a college town in a mostly rural state, where like EVERYONE is only there b/c of the college :)
it might get annoying but it'd be much cheaper than living in a big city and attending college there

Excuse *me *but your number 2 doesn’t seem to be very accurate. Your assumptions about americans are totally wrong, lets not confuse MyWish now. If you haven’t had a good experience with Americans, thts your case, you can’t base your assumptions on your experiences. Amercans are not badtameez and mostly jahil. Even though frm what i’ve heard, Canadians are mostly nice ppl, the same goes with Americans, I haven’t met a single American here who was either badtameez or jahil, so please correct your assumption. I’m pretty sure MyWish will want to settle in a good community anyways, so he/she shouldn’t have a problem at all.

How do they treat you at the borders, like dogs and third class people. Not me, I have seen other been treated like criminals at Amrican borders.. These Bastar ds take finger prints of ladies with kids in their laps.........
Bank tellers and cashiers don't even say thanks, or have a nice day etc etc. My sister came from Canada, and she noticed it so quick that I was amazed. She said thanks and have a nice day to them in order to make them realize what are the supposed to do.

if you have only between 2 to 3k, you'd be better of going to wherever you get a tuition waiver AND some additional funding (such as grant, loan etc). If you have a really fantastic undergrad accomplishment, some univ's may even give you some assistanceship.
Hard to comment without specifics on subject, but my opinion is this - if you're studying full time, I'd locate the univs that have the best programs in my field. Once you get in, assuming they give a tuition waiver (full or part), I think it's possible to take a campus or off-campus job to earn some living money. Many people do this.

Detroit, Michigan where I have been warned by my friends to be extreemly carefull of the black and that I can get robed at any time. Almost the same experience as New York. The worst Immigration at Detroit-Canada tunnel I have ever seen, yuk yuk yuk....

Pretty surprised you got tht kind of treatment, especially in the north...depends on individuals also though, can't blame just the whole country. As for border regulation, I think MyWish is already aware about the strict border laws enforced after 9/11 ... And as far as the manners of bankers and other ppl you gave; Never came across anyone like tht in my life. You were either just at the wrong place at the wrong time, or you just had your mind set that most americans are jahil and badtameez, which is totally totally wrong. Not trying to be rude or anything, just making sure MyWish doesn't get wrong assumptions about the ppl here....

^ Bhai, I am writting what I observed. And this is the image we desis have here. The educated ones get squashed among the uneducated.
No offense against America but this is what happens. Or may be that most of my experience was after 9/11 and time surrounding that incident. But even now, in cleveland where I am living for the last 2 years, the situation is the same. looks like people have not learned the manners of talking to others
Or may be it is just an American way and I feel it cause I am not an American myself.....

Ahan…FYI, I have been in Michigan for the past couple of years, still am. I travel to Pakistan and Saudi Arabia every 3-4 months (yes, pakistan and saudi arabia, think about border law enforcement here)…Even though I live in a well-settled place far frm detroit, I have to fly outta detroit, n lemme tell you, I’ve never come across a mean INS person. They’ve always shown good manners, and ya, one more thing, my friends who live in other states, they specially go through DET when they come frm paki, they say Immigration is much better here, so dunno why you think Immigration is “yuk yuk” here…As I said before, don’t base your thoughts on false assumptions…

Compared to Bufallo, NY........I think the immigration there in Detroit-Canada tunnel are the worst I have see. But at the same ime, the immigration at the "Bridge to canada" in detroit are very nice.
Another thing. Now after I have crossed the border so many times from Bufallo, the immigration officers have started to recognize my face and passport and the details about my profession and now I am most of the times chatting in a leisure way with them.
