Tickets to a college football game ($60 $150) will probably cost less than an ipod or xbox but will probably be very original. He will always remember it that you gave him those.
Religious stuff is not really a norm but it is appropriate.
12 is a little older age for clothes, usually kids that old don't like others picking clothes for them.

A Quran with good tafseer would be appropriate. I don't really know what is traditional, though. How about some nice CDs by muslim groups, Raihaan, Soliders of Allah, etc.?

Hmm the football ticket sounds good. I think will try to find out if he has an xbox too. Mum was saying clothes which I rejected. Islamic stuff sounds good too but im not sure if he would be too thrilled about it:bummer: but then maybe i should give it anyway and who knows it may start to interest him! Hmmm.

I bet majority would be getting him topi, tasbi, and janamaz. If you know he has a game console, but aren't familiar with the brand then get him a gift certificate from EB.
I reckon my cousin's cousin (who is becoming a haafiz) commented on how all he gets is topi, tasbi, janamaz, and nothing else.
I'd suggest you get him a nice copy of Quran and something else as well.

I remember my brother’s ameen. It was when we still lived in England. So many people came over and he looked so cute. He had to wear this tinsle haar with a topi and recited a surah … sitting in the middle of a room full of women. 
I wore a cream garara that my ammi made me. It was such fun. He got tonnes of cash and toys, but he was younger than 12 … probably around 10/11 at the time so he could still appreciate that stuff. Things seemed so much more simple back then.
