MAC is probably one of the cheapest makeup brand high end department stores carry. Its target are also younger customers with limited budget. If you can't afford that you can simply go for drug store brands. I have everything. All the brands. I use them all. If there is one thing I can tell you that MAC makes good is.. their eyeshadows. Other than that just go for drug store brands, they are equally good.
I love MAC and I think I love it because I have yet to have a bad experience with any of their products. Every single thing I have purchased from the MAC line has met or exceeded my expectations.
I have tried Inglot and I have to disagree that it is not comparable to MAC quality.
I do use drugstore brands for things like eye-liner and mascara......stuff that you only keep for a couple of months and then throw out.
I agree. The colour payoff and finish for MAC eyeshadow's is hard to beat, even when compared to more expensive brands.

^I have products from everything; Chanel, Dior, Estee Lauder, Laura Mercier but the only consistently good one through the whole product range is MAC imo.
Especially their eye products; eyeshadows, paint, fluidline are all staples for me.
I always dabble in drugstore but have yet to find a product I would repurchase (or even one that I don't give away to a cousin). I genuinely find that the more expensive brands do the job better and last longer as you need a lot less. For example, I use my nars blush everyday and have had it for over a year now... not even a quarter finished.
i did buy 2 lipsticks n one blush from MAC n can u believe it i used only one of the two lipsticks once n its been months i havn't touched anything else. it's o.k. i didn't like the feel of the lipstick after i bought it n used at home. i havn't tried any MAC eye shawdow yet.
seriously I"v been reading threads after threads of all you lucky women owning lots of MAC stuff! I feel a little deprived :)
Don't be: aside from the brushes and lipsticks, you're not really missing much. MAC has a large following and an impressive Global presence, but that's more of a reflection on the marketing might of parent Estee Lauder Brands than the quality of the product itself. Your own taste in makeup is largely a matter of personal preference.
i never liked MAC's eyeshadow, i love urban decay though. i have gone to MAC's counter many times thinking that i might like something but i never end up liking any of the eyeshadow. i own one MAC brush, a paint pot (which is pretty good) and that's about it.
i am not rich enough to buy high end brand makeup either. but i save my money to buy them. how i sort my money is that i promised to my self that i won't use credit card for makeup, i will only use cash that i get on birthdays, eid etc. that method works quite well for me.
beside that, makeup last for ever unless you are talking about an eyeliner or mascara. i have never ran out of eyeshadow or lipstick, or even foundation. i have thrown them away after getting sick of using the same product for a long time, but i have hardly ever ran out of it.

It's probably the pigmentation and/or texture; MAC e/s are hard to beat in terms of sheer selection, but many people find that the pigmentation is not up to snuff and thus more product has to be used, creating problems w/ the texture as well. You probably like the UD e/s because of their pigment saturation: less product is needed and the product can be applied more sheerly/lightly.

Alternatively, you can purchase low-end or drugstore brands as (here in the US, at least) many d/s brands are really catching up with their high-end counterparts in terms of quality (if not selection).
I am rich enough but I don't give a damn bout MAC. Well I don't give a damn about any kind of make up but that is another story. Forget MAC, it is stupid. Don't ever feel bad about what you read in threads. Just pray for your kismet iA.

ETA: plz do not take the word "deprived" in this post too seriously :) see some of the posts below n you'll know what I mean
just take good care of ur health n skin , when u glow frm within doesnt matter wht brand ur puttin on u wud look good, they r all by n large the same, all drug store brands. as for the high end brands , i dont know havnt tried anythin besides a couple of brands.
I thought it was overpriced, honestly, until I bought an eyeshadow set from them. That thing is AMAZING. I'd rather spend 14 dollars on an eyeshadow set, like the one I bought 2 christmas's ago, than on multiple eyshadows from other companies that just don't do the same thing. In the end, I'm paying more with other brands and getting 1/20th the satisfaction.
I dont know about lipsticks or other products. But the eyshadows - for sure.
Wait for the holiday sales --> you can find 2 shade palettes for under 15 usually, and they will last you.
I know at Saks 5th at my outlet mall, they have the same stuff, just older, for much less. Like 25%-30% less of the original price. I'm now buying from there.
you are right about MAC's eyeshadow. i swatch them on my hand and they just never look pretty enough.
the only one i ever liked is the cranberry one but i own a very similar color in urban decay.

i am not a makeup snob or anything, i do own drug store makeup. but honestly ever since i touched urban decay's eye makeup, i can't go back to drug store. even MAC doesn't match up to Urban decay's eye stuff.
i always LOVED eyemakeup and that was the first thing i started using once i was allowed to do makeup, but i am quite dark skinned and the drug store eye stuff NEVER showed up on my eyes as it did on lighter skin ppl. i bought something pink and it looked white on me cuz of my skin tone. that never happened to me with urban decay. even a single wash of color got me so many compliment which i never got even after a hard core application of drug store e/s.
that is just my personal opinion though. my mom uses drug store makeup (she is very very fair though) and think i am crazy to be spend my money on high end makeup.
lol..** in the UK, UD is mostly stocked in drugstores. **
I used to use UD before MAC and imo their eyeshadows are pretty good but I don't find them as blendable and don't like the finishes as much.
I have UD Last Call and MAC Cranberry, the former takes a lot more work to get product on your brush and blend.
Comes down to personal preference.
Don't front, Stoppit! You know the UK don't have no "drugstores"; you lot have "chemists"! Now I can't trust anything you say about Urban Decay! How do I know if what you say is true, or if you're just " 'Avin' a larf" (as the Britishers say)?
Seriously though, it's the opposite situation with low-end brands such as Bourjois and Eyeko: we keep hearing that in Europe they're sold like candy in chemists' shops, but here in the States, they're considered prestige brands and priced accordingly. :-(

Reputedly, that's a bestselling color in India. I've never seen or tried it, though.

No one said you were; it's all about personal preference. I myself own a mix of drugstore, high-end, and cult/niche brand slap.
even MAC doesn't match up to Urban decay's eye stuff.

It's probably b/c of the lack of pigmentation; because pigment is costlier than filler, low-end brands are often guilty of going easy on the pigmentation, and being heavy-handed with the colorless fillers. The result: poor color payoff and often cakey texture. That said: some high-end brands are also guilty of this, while some drugstore brands are bucking the trend and creating some really decent stuff.
that is just my personal opinion though. my mom uses drug store makeup (she is very very fair though) and think i am crazy to be spend my money on high end makeup.
My mother's quite the opposite: she thinks drugstore makeup is the DEVIL, lol!
Fact: American brains malfunction at the slightest use of English, no matter which dialect you use.
That said: we Americans often find ourselves tripping over your infernal tongue! Incidentally: be a dear and apologize to Milleh for me (I wrote in another post that she was expert at “stitching up” another guppan, when I really meant to say “taking the piss out of” her). This is what I get for learning ‘British’ from Steve Coogan; from now on, I’ll stick to Yiddish and Jive.
As for Bourjois: most of their stuff is pure cack, but I purchased a Delice de Poudre bronzer a while back; great stuff, but after three minutes I wanted to peel my face off to relieve the itching. Lord knows what those Francs put in there!
imo no other brand can beat Mac, Nars comes close but are dearer in price. saying tht I have began to use alot of urban decay recently I find their prices value for money best time to buy urban decay is when there have their 3 for 2 promotions on.
not all Boots have urban decay but if u order it online u can pick it up from ur local boots. also some debenhams and house of fraser stock them too
Even if I do get a MAC eyeshadow .. like order it online, I would not know how to apply decent eyeshadow so that I would look like a clown, :( so better I dont try it.
