Am I the only one who is shocked by how obsessive wedding planning has become?

Im really shocked by the detail of planning in this forum, like finding a specifically named make-up artist, or designer dress etc.

Doesnt anyone browse anymore for something that just catches their fancy, as an alternative to going to a specific designer just bcos of their name.

Wedding make-up, would no one consider getting a friend to do it for them?

If u r a bride going for a named make-up artist, dont u mind that u wont look like yourself on your wedding day?

Am i really the only one around here who finds some of the things here a little OTT?

Re: Am I the only one who is shocked by how obsessive wedding planning has become?

question are you married or abt to get married???

Re: Am I the only one who is shocked by how obsessive wedding planning has become?

look its our special day .... we want everything to be special and memorable and we want to look our best even if it means not lookin like our selves.....
its our special day where we are in the center of attention we have the right to want things done our way the way we want them done

Re: Am I the only one who is shocked by how obsessive wedding planning has become?

Well, I don't see anything wrong with it, mainly cause I didn't really get to do any of this stuff for my wedding. I think it's exciting to be a Bridezilla and discuss all these things! :D It's great that people know exactly what they want and can discuss their experiences and review different things (i.e. makeup artists).

What I think is OTT is how engagements are as big of a deal as weddings these days (in the sense that girl needs a designer outfit, need a big hall, need a decorator, need a DJ, MC, etc.).

I personally have not seen engagement parties being made a big deal on GS, but i've just noticed this trend in the community on how much of a huge thing it has become.

OK, so at the moment it looks like i am the only one, however, what im trying to understand is do u guys decide the dress has to b by a certain designer, or do u look at different things and think, "oh, that looks nice, i think i'll have that".

Im not saying its wrong, im just shocked bcos i've not come across this level of attention to detail (cos i dont wanna use OBSESSION again!) b4 in any of my friends wedding planning. Sure they all wanted to look good and choose nice stuff etc, but I have never had any decide to go for big names just for the sake of big names.

Surely u would be the centre of attention WITHOUT a designer dress and designer make-up that makes u look like a stranger? I mean, will no one consider a local good artist or just a non-designer but equally beautiful wedding dress?

Re: Am I the only one who is shocked by how obsessive wedding planning has become?

rupay thas where i agree with you :D lol .... well my makeup artist is depilex but my wedding outfit isnt designer i designed it my self and im glad its the most gorgeous thing ive ever seen im in love with it i was like to my mom that wen i put i ON I NEVER WANA TAKE IT :D:D:D:D but i understand what you mean lookin diff from everthing hena??

Re: Am I the only one who is shocked by how obsessive wedding planning has become?

hi rupal,

I think in the same way as you do. I myself did not get a chance to have a lavish wedding but i still think that a makeup artist does not have to be at the top to do good makeup. I know of even my friend who is really good at makeup. I think people have this preconceived ideas that if it is a top makeup artist and a designer dress that it would have to be the very best. But these days people tend to forget these things. I know its your one day to be centre of attention but I would rather be centre of attention at my graduation, weddings are not the be all and end all of everything....sorry if i offended anyone:)

Re: Am I the only one who is shocked by how obsessive wedding planning has become?

You know, I think this is an important day and every couple should have a chance to make a it special, the way they want. What I don't like is the whiny brattiness that occurs when little things don't go the bride's way. You have to be flexible and you have to remember that this occasion is about joining two people and two families. And if you let all the little stuff ruin this important stuff, it's bad news. I also think that if the make up and clothes help you express yourself, go for it, but not at the expense of your own identity.

Re: Am I the only one who is shocked by how obsessive wedding planning has become?

ami123: But at a graduation, others will also be graduating right?... at a wedding, the bride and groom are just naturally the centre of attention, because it really is their special day :)

In some cases though, maybe brides-to-be did actually look around and like the work of a specific designer, so they chose that one.. doesn't always have to be because of the big name.

Re: Am I the only one who is shocked by how obsessive wedding planning has become?

lol bahahaha it's quite silly but hey to each their own. i know myself and if i plan so religiously and the things don't turn out the way i want, i will be so disappointed and grumpy. so i'd rather relax and just go with the flow :D (or may be not) :p

Re: Am I the only one who is shocked by how obsessive wedding planning has become?

i so agree n there r man examples of it on GS itself

Re: Am I the only one who is shocked by how obsessive wedding planning has become?

Hooray, Hooray, people r seeing it my way!!!

Re: Am I the only one who is shocked by how obsessive wedding planning has become?

MehnazQ and Ami123, please tell us about your weddings, do u regret not having had so much control as todays bridezillas?

I think its good to maintain a balance, yes of course choose what u like for your wedding, but i think sometimes individuality goes out of the window in favour of whatever is the "flavour of the month".

Angel21, im so pleased u designed your own wedding dress, are we allowed to see a pic of it yet?

rupayhalwa..i totally agree with u!..i dont really care about designers lehgnas and specific make up artists or specific beauty parlours doing my makeup..ill just talk the makeup aritst thru it and if i dont liek soem tstuff ill tell er nd shell adjust /change accordingly...

im just gonna choose a nice pretty dress..im not gonna go overboard..simple jewllery..simple function..

honestly i think its more important that what type of person im marrying and what type of inlaws im getting and what my life will be like after marraige..to work on that n owrry about myself..n work on bringing samaj and sabr inside of me to have a sucessful marraig rather than becoming bridezilla and going ballistic over stage settings..dress kaam..wagera vagera..

please girlz..dont take offence..thisis y i never said anything b4 cause i thiought evreyone is oppostie of me here and if i sawy somethign like this the girls will attack me..but maybe there r some girlz here like me..:)

i agree with this post but i think im gonna be as bad as anyone when it comes to my wedding. like i undersatnd how obsessive people become over every little detail cause ive been involved in loads of weddings but when you see the end result its just so amazing. its supposed to be the happiest day of your life, so why not make it as special as possibe? the obsession lasts what 6months-1 year but atleast your day is perfect. youre gonna tell your kids/grandkids/your grandkids kids about this day so why not make it just magical???
money comes and goes but this is a once in a lifetime oppurtuinity (obv not if u get divorced but u knw what i mean...

If the friend was a really good makeup artist then yeah. Otherwise HELL NO. If I wanted to look like myself...well i look like myself every day! i loved my makeup on my wedding, my family said that i looked really different ( i guess she had done alot of contouring) but i never really saw much difference, i looked like myself. as for the dress, i personally don't really care, i'll go for what's gorgeous, designer or not. Though if i had gotten married in pak I woulda made my cousin do my mehndi... for free :D

Re: Am I the only one who is shocked by how obsessive wedding planning has become?

Here's the thing.. I admire your opinion. I have similar ideals myself. I don't just pick brands or designers merely because they'll slap a tag on the back of my shirt of my wedding dress. Somehow a lot of girls feel the need to do so -- perhaps makes them feel better about themselves. Who knows. And honestly, who cares. I certainly don't buy anything and everything I see with lots of zeros attached to the price tag. I am planning my wedding. I want everything to be perfect and just like I have always imagined it but I am not going to go overboard with my expenditure. Designers and labels are great and hurray for you if you want to invest in those but I have a fashion degree and I'm sure I can beat designers any given day so I'll pass on them for now.
Plus I am a very contained shopper. I spend money wisely but get everything I want. However, I don't see anything wrong with being obsessed about your wedding. It is truly one of those times in your life that are a one time thing and that mark a new beginning of your life. So although I believe its okay to be obsessed about your wedding, I also believe moderation is best.
Brides are special and if something makes them feel even more special on their big day, I won't judge them.
My personal opinion is to try and keep focused and avoid tunnel vision. But enjoy this time however you like -- You're a bride!

Re: Am I the only one who is shocked by how obsessive wedding planning has become?

The best makeup artist will make you look like you, only better. Unless it is your specific intent to look different (and I mean very different), they shouldn't touch your face.

Re: Am I the only one who is shocked by how obsessive wedding planning has become?

yes you are the only one who is shocked

Oh, yes, yes, yes, I would and I am looking for a good make-up artist, wedding planner and a dress that won't cost be an arm and a leg and still be beautiful enough. I keep drawing a blank as most people like to rope in well known artists and designers but I don't have that kind of money to throw around.

So, if you know people in Karachi who can work on a limited budget, send them to me and for that I'll be eternally grateful.
