MQM chief’s remarks
Dawn Editorial
Tuesday, 24 Aug, 2010

A decade ago, Gen Musharraf promised many of the same things generals invariably promise, but delivered on none. The MQM would know this better than most because it had a seat at the table of power under Gen Musharraf. - File Photo.

Viewed from any angle, the comments made on Sunday by MQM chief Altaf Hussain are deeply disturbing. Usually, the MQM never tires of pointing out its secular, democratic credentials at every turn, positioning itself as the last line of defence against religious extremists and at the vanguard of the fight against a landed aristocracy that exercises outsized influence over the national political set-up.

However, reconciling the party’s avowed positions with Mr Hussain’s latest comments is well nigh impossible. It is a sad reality here that military interventions have never taken place in a vacuum, with sections of the political spectrum invariably playing the role of cheerleaders and enablers.

There appears to be some need to revisit the basics here. Of the 63 years of Pakistan’s existence, less than half have been spent under democratically elected leaderships. So it would only be fair to assume that for all the problems that afflict the country, the Pakistan Army deserves to shoulder a sizeable portion of the blame. The track record of military dictators confirms this: each of the last three generals who have run Pakistan has exited with the country in dire straits. Gen Yahya Khan of course presided over the break-up of Pakistan; Gen Zia left the country awash in guns, drugs and a toxic ideology; and Gen Musharraf exited with the country on the verge of economic collapse and racked by internal violence.

In the past, just as Mr Hussain urged on Sunday, generals have indeed taken over with the declared goal of cleansing the body politic of ‘corrupt politicians’. But each time the generals have eventually found themselves political bedfellows with many of the very same politicians they initially condemned. If the army has a magic wand to clean up Pakistan’s politics, it has yet to show it to the people of Pakistan. A decade ago, Gen Musharraf promised many of the same things generals invariably promise, but delivered on none. The MQM would know this better than most because it had a seat at the table of power under Gen Musharraf.

Dismaying as the comments made on Sunday may have been, it is reassuring that at least the initial reaction from across the political spectrum has been to express faith in the democratic process. Poor governance, endemic corruption and a withering state all undoubtedly exist here — but the only cure for such deep-rooted malaise is time and patience. Unhappily, in the past, every option but the obvious has been tried here: the repeated and peaceful transfer of power from one government to the next. Perhaps politicians need to recommit themselves to preventing history from repeating itself.

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

Altaf Hussain, Imran Khan, Nawaz Sharif, Chaudhries of Gujrat, Mullah Diesel, Jamat-e-Islami... The list of "corrupt politicians" who are spun up by army and intelligence and are willing to be army's B team, is a long one. They are like prostitutes that get used and abused by the Khakis at the time of their choosing and liking.

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

Very unfair, and conniving.

Imran Khan has contributed more to the nation (from his own efforts w/out having come to power) than the other politicians who have only plundered the nation's wealth and lined their own pockets.

Even now while the politicians are no where to be seen except Europe and USA. Imran Khan is working locally to raise enough funds that will most certainly benefit the effectees of floods.

To bunch him with the corrupt lot, is dishonest at best, and misleading at worst.

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

Khan, however, said the army should not come into power and grab authorities of a civil and democratic government.

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

thats just proves that he is mentally unstable . Can not make up his mind. Within a min he said these 2 lines

"Tehrik-e-Insaf will back military rule in the country for the sake of stability.”

“army should not come into power and grab authorities of a civil and democratic government.”

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

Guys...calm down...any possibility of holding a referendum:

-Vote for martial law

-Vote for the current government

PS: lol...I am not convinced by the governing skills...rather afra tafri... of the current democratic government...lol

PS1: Aur jab jis qoum ka morale gir jata hai...tou hum unper doosroN ko nafiz kar detey hein [Al-Quran]

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

You are focused on and getting misled by his social work. PTI as a party and Imran Khan as a leader is an engineering product of a certain section of agencies with godfathers like general Hameed Gul. That is why his political views are in line with them. Hameed Gul himself has admitted his role in forming PTI and making Imran Khan a political leader.

Taking a political position and getting the support of agencies (and media) to get propped up as a political leader is political corruption. Nawaz Sharif was propped up by general Gilani and others so he was politically corrupt before he became famous for financial corruption.

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

as if there is rule of law under the present corrupt, incompetent and directionless PPP Government. And what freedom of speech, only recently this nalaiq government closed down TV channels for reporting the shoe-throwing incident!!

US-style democracy might work here but party-based formula is simply unworkable in a corrupt and dishonest society like ours

Imran Khan and PTI against any military intervention: Omar Cheema](News | Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf)
](News | Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf)http://insaf.pk/images/print.gif
The central information secretary of the PTI Omar Cheema has said an erroneous impression has been created by a section of the press that Imran Khan in a TV talk show with Dr Shahid Masood yesterday has supported the statement of Altaf Hussain inviting’ patriotic generals’ to clean the Augean stables of the government.

In a press release issued today he clarified that the PTI chairman was quoted out of the context. Imran Khan has always been opposing the rule by the jackboots. Don’t read too much into it, he added. He said it has always been principled stand of the PTI that martial law is no panacea for the problems of the country. PTI is considering of holding a national conference after Eid to find a solution within the constitutional frame work of the problems countries facing, he added.

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

Folks,
Look at the video of Imran Khan's interview with Shahid Masood yourself. Throughout the 50min interview, Imran Khan repeatedly says that Army should not come to power. Shahid Masood is continuously trying to trap Imran Khan by coming up with hypothetical scenarios. Finally, near the end of the interview he manages to extract a statement from Imran Khan that IF there is complete chaos in the country the army can step in to provide stability but NOT take power. ARY News then takes this statement out of context and publishes a story with the headline that Imran supports military rule.

Yellow journalism at its worst!

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

see the above post ^^

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

That is very pathetic of Shahid and ARY.

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

I've always maintained that Shahid Masood is a quack. At best, the level of Bill O'Reilly and other such journos in the US.

Re: Altaf Hussain now demands Martial Law - Criticized by all parties

yes daaaktar Qiyamat Masood is a quack indeed. but the question arises why does Imran keep going back to his show? he seems to be regular on there with other idiots like Hameed Gul, etc.

no sane person goes on his show and no sane person watches this yellow journalist's verbal diarrhea. Kamran Shafi went on the show and later wrote about how through clever editing his words were twisted and how he regretted going on the show. I've seen Ayaz Amir who is normally such a calm, collected person get super frustrated on Mossad's show. he actually ended up defending the government and sounded like a PPP spokesperson because that is how retarded the criticism by Ansar Abbasi and Qiyamat Masood was.

but there is one person Qiyamat Masood loves calling after Hameed Gul and that is Imran. people are known by the company they keep. and Imran is not doing himself any favor in that regard because his company seems to be Qazi, Hameed Gul, daaaktar Qiyamat, etc i.e., the worst of the worst and bondafide nutjobs of their respective fields .
